If you are a newbie and this will be your first handgun purchase the 9mm is currently being used by the US Military, NATO, FBI, … The .40, .45 and 357 SIG have more muzzle flip then the 9mm. If it is for conceal carry a sub-compact is usually the best size. If it is for home defense only then a compact or full size is better and it should have an accessory rail for a flashlight attachment.
