When was that? -I was an east Coast Hiphop kid in the 80's, and worked in the business as a Producer and Recording Engineer in 99-07; and still to this day,I don't ever recall them being the same thing. A freestyle has always been a performance that isn't "Produced" or planned accordingly....but "off the top" is a Freestyle that is absolutely unrehearsed and being created in real time! -you can spit a written in a "freestyle", but "off the top" is a special gift within free-styling that most rappers can't do very well. It's exactly the same thing with playing instruments: you have a band of dudes sitting a around playing Micheal Jackson cover songs...they are playing music that has already been written and produced, that's a "freestyle"......but if they all all sitting around improvising and having a jam session, or trying to come up with new melodies to create new music from scratch, then they are playing "off the top" as a cohesive unit-there is a difference! Rah-C just did a dope ass "freestyle", but for instance...the Harry Mack video when he walks into a random liquor store and starts rapping about everything in there..... that was a dope ass " off the top" Even the battle rappers aren't always going "off the top", that's why when the crowd is hype and keeps messing them up or not letting them continue, they keep starting over at the same spot in a line trying to get it out...or when they say a punchline that doesn't seem to fit their opponent-because its already rehearsed and memorized. So why would you consider freestyle and off the top the same thing? -it's rare that people say they are
