___
Consider yourself lucky when your life is literally saved by landing on an umbrella and a car, which is exactly what happened to Rafael Schwaiger while swooping his Petra 69 canopy (2.8 wingload).
His Cypres AAD was set to the wrong mode ("Expert" mode instead of "Speed" mode), which caused an unexpected AAD fire on his high speed landing and automatically deployed his reserve parachute mid-swoop. He was lucky enough to land on an umbrella covering the cars in the parking lot, which literally saved his life.
Raf humbly admits that this incident was caused by human error due to incorrect settings on the AAD, which serves as an important reminder to check your gear and AAD settings, especially when flying high-performance canopies.

I once screwed up a swoop badly. People came running over to see if I was still alive and I immediately jumped up and walked off like it was no issue. People who witnessed it were amazed at how I was seemingly impervious to pain. Those same amazed people didn't see me gasping for breath in the toilets and struggling to function for the next couple of weeks with full body bruising. I got a bit more conservative after that :)

@@robn2497 totally man. I was under canopy and a newbie went past me in free fall, as he pitched his pilot chute, and his pilot chute hit my left knee, and I landed. At first enraged, but by time I was at the ground I just hugged him and asked if he understood the gravity of what just happened, offered him coaching and went home . The next day, man ... I wasn't feeling so good I'm my mind trying to figure out who was at fault , why it all happened. After thinking about it, talking to many of my friends, come to figure out it was the load organizers fault, I argued with him not to put a solo freely with 50 jumps out last behind us when the uppers literally had the plane flying 10 knots across the fukn ground. When my Stiletto 120 opened, it was a little northeast, jump run was north, and no matter how many times I tried explaining to this guy in the plane ,"GIVE US TONS OF TIME, MORE THAN 45 DEGREES FROM THE PLANE, I showed him with heads out the door etc, he didn't give enough, apparently back slide toward us and caused a very near death experience. It messed with my head until Tuesday when we were flying again.

He pulled the front riser of his main chute because he was already under his deployed reserve (orange), quite a good move as it disabled the main chute immediately and killed its down planing movement. This move made his reserve more efficient and his vertical speed lower before impacting.

@jamesmorrison1308
@jamesmorrison1308 3 года назад
Basically his AAD went off after his primary canopy was released (so he was flying with two canopies). This may have been a result of him waiting too long to pull. It looks like this was the case even while he was still stable (at the beginning of the video). However, when he turned left, his canopies started downplaining, so he had no lift. If he had kept going straight, he could’ve landed safely with both canopies.
@benwearne542
@benwearne542 3 года назад
He was swooping. He has a very small canopy and hes very experienced at flying towards the ground very fast and skimming across the ground at high speeds before coming to a running stop. His AAD went off cause it though he was in freefall and deployed his reserve. He cant steer with both out. He almost broke both his legs he needs to reprogram his AAD before swooping

Lucky mother **. My second skydiving trip went wrong and the chute tangled. I kept my cool but my instructor was panicking. Kicked left for 2 minutes where I could have been enjoying the scenery. Chute opened 30 seconds before impact and I felt like my trip on the way down was wasted kicking... took a minute or two to sink in that we almost died.

I don't think this man realized the severity of the situation he was in... he's literally a few hundred feet from the ground and has no parachute deployed yet... is he not worried about his imminent death in about 3 seconds? By some miracle he's saved and just whistles hahaha. Props to him I'm just confused by how unstressed he is.

He did have a parachute deployed, however it's a small parachute for high speed landings. He was doing fine and getting ready for landing, only Issue was he didn't select the right AAD setting for this kind of activity (security system that deploys the reserve parachute automatically if you are rushing too fast to the ground), which caused it to fire just above the ground, and mess with his already opened parachute.

He had 2 chutes out in the end.. Did he forget to pull, but pulled his main at the same time as his CYPRES fired, or was he somehow flying his chute vertically down?... Whatever happened he was saved by the big tent....Lucky guy.

Swooping under a small canopy, AAD set to the wrong mode, fired and deployed the reserve.
