** What happened **
This wingsuiter said they were demoing a docile canopy to practice a new deployment technique, which resulted in serious line twists that they were still fighting as they hit their hard deck. However, instead of chopping at their hard deck, they kept fighting the line twists down to 600 feet above the ground! They then decided to land very close to the road and some powerlines rather than aim for one of the huge open areas. Overall, just a series of bad decisions that could've ended much worse.
** Why did it happen **
Terrible reasoning: “It’s a demo.”
This jumper says they didn’t want to chop because it was a demo canopy and didn’t want to lose it. That’s a horrible argument. Regardless of whether it’s a demo or not, if you lose a canopy, you’re going to wind up having to buy a new one if you can't find it. Heck, if you lose a demo, at least you’re assured some people will help you look for it - the rep for the manufacturer might even get out there with you.
Terrible reasoning: “I can totally get out of this.”
As they hit their hard deck, they said “I was confident I could spin out of the line twist in approximately 500 feet as I was now spinning and could grab the lines.” It’s called a hard deck for a reason. If you hit your hard deck, you don’t roll the dice and hope you’re going to fix the issue before it’s too late. Just chop it.
Deployment Technique
The jumper was attempting a deployment technique which creates a larger burble - “being head high during deployment, not allowing for clean airflow over the top of the wingsuit and generating a larger burble." The jumper said they didn’t have a weak pitch, but given the result, it’s likely that it may not have been quite as strong as they thought. Either way, as they pointed out themselves, “the extra burble caught the pilot chute and d-bag, spinning me up for 6-8 twists” before the canopy even opened.
** How could it be prevented **
Respect Your Hard Deck
The most dangerous issue with this jump, the fact that this jumper ignored their hard deck, is easily dealt with by simply using common sense and following your training. It’s that simple.
Careful Deployments
Firstly, wingsuits create a large burble. If you’re going to - intentionally - do something that makes said burble even bigger you better be ready to have a nice confident pitch and get that pilot chute out of the burble. Additionally, a professional wingsuit pilot consulted on this video noted that a slightly asymmetrical deployment may have also contributed to exacerbating the issue.
** Additional Notes **
Terrible Landing Choices
This jumper decided to land near a road, a fence, and some trees. Why? Because they didn’t want to walk too far. (Remember that terrible reasoning comment?) They had massive fields to land in safely but, instead, they put themselves in a corner. This could have easily ended badly.

"Skydiver refuses to even try to clear line twists for several minutes" would be a more appropriate title. Also, it seems pretty clear that the reason for the line twists is a super sharp turn during the deployment. Being head high during a wingsuit deployment is definitely not a problem, it's the preferred body position (during a flare) for a lot of wingsuiters. Turning during deployment is a problem though, no matter where your head is pointing.
@dalesfailssagaofasuslord783
@dalesfailssagaofasuslord783 3 года назад
I don’t wingsuit but it seems like every deployment is meant to be somewhat head high due to the flare. I’ve heard guys that fly some of the powerful suits say the flare is so aggressive that it gives them some of the softest openings they’ve ever head in any skydive,wingsuit or not.
@stephanlude5951
@stephanlude5951 3 года назад
Right.... but he had enough luck. The twist was symmetric. So he had time enough and could fly straight. Maybe he even could have grabbed over the twist and steer and flare... maybe not. But the shitty deployment suggests that he is not very experienced. Such an off-heading deployment with a wingsuit friendly 7-cell-canopy? hm... probably he should have cutaway.... when in doubt let it go *singing: Let it go! Let it go! He was supposed to pull his lines apart immediately away from each other while making scissor kicks so that his body rotated. He would have untangled his lines much earlier that way. Then he should not have gone straight towards the power lines. He should have turned. He was just lucky that he made it. I hope he gets better instruction if/when he jumps next.
@amalekited
@amalekited 3 года назад
Nah, they don’t recommend that anymore. You keep them together to lessen tension and move the twist as low as possible to make scissor kicking out as easy as possible.
@DominiHarling
@DominiHarling 3 года назад
@@amalekited admittedly I haven’t been skydiving in 20 years but when I did get my lines tangled once I was able to pull them apart while kicking which caused me to rotate and get the lines untangled much quicker. Then two cells in chute hadn’t inflated so I just pulled to brake which cause my chute to fully open and I must have had 2000-2500 feet of altitude still to descend safely with a healthy open chute. I’m not sure why it stresses the lines anymore than it does when the parachute first opens.

@amalekited
@amalekited 3 года назад
@@hemp64731 No, scissor kicking doesn’t cause tension. The difference in training is only whether to pull risers apart VS push them together. Old=apart. New=push. Why? Pulling the risers apart causes tension that keeps the twist high in the lines. If the twist is high, your scissor kicks will be less effective than if the twist was at the bottom near the risers. You can move the twist low by keeping the risers together, not pulling apart. With the new method you’ll notice you’ll get more untwist with each kick. Both methods work. I’m just the messenger.

Was the rate of descent the danger here? Didn’t seem like a huge problem to come down with that twist. Yes, he obviously would not be able to steer clear of trees and power lines with that twist, but seeing as he landed close to…you guest it…trees and power lines with full control after finally clearing the twist, I’m guessing he would have been just fine. Hence the lack of urgency during the twist.

Then once his brain clears, and he clears the twists, he chooses the next worst place to land. Feet away from power lines and a fence. Classic video of what not to do in all aspects of skydiving. Actually pissed me off watching this.
