I recognised what you said about The Wren The Wren. I liked it more than you but with similar reservations. Unfortunately the horrifying badger scene is crucial to understanding Phil's character I think. You have really made me want to get to How to Say Babylon.
If it was, I think I missed that because I had to skip the scene, I couldn't listen any more 💔 Yes you definitely in for a treat with that one. I hope you're continuing to recover x
I can’t wait to read How to Say Babylon, willing my Libby app to hurry up and give me the audiobook. 😂 You’ve made me slightly more excited for Dolly Maunder and slightly less excited for The Wren The Wren. I really like your Friday reads format. 😊📚
Oh no this bit about Alice Roberts is worrying! I've booked to see her at Hay because I thought for sure If love her books, but now I'm a bit unsure 😅😳. Xx
it's hard reading about violence, cults, etc - like watching a car wreck - don't want to see it yet can't look away. but a woman overcoming is exciting and intriguing@@YourTrueShelf
@@938quilt yep I understand that totally. There is some violence but it doesn't overwhelm the book. The overcoming part is definitely the overarching theme.
I’m really keen to get to Dolly Maunder after hearing you speak about it. I’ve picked up Matrescence too! Impressed so far, but only about 15% in. Love the Friday Reads format 🧡
I'm not mad about this Friday Reads plan! Oh, I can't do animal stuff in books either. I loved hearing you rave about How to Say Babylon! Thanks for the reminder that I need to get it with one of my audio credits! Oh! The book math equation consists of books I love so I'm 100% in!
I hear you about more frequent updates. It’s the only way I can do it! I’m glad to know your experience of the Enright and the non-fiction. I’m so interested in the Sinclair book!
In Ancestors she is always stressing that older archaeologists were bias and put their own worldview in their analysis, then she does exactly the same thing! It was really jarring, and she kind of belittles them. I love a Friday reads, I find doing monthly ones a bit stressful if I've read lots of books so once a week is nicer for me.
Hi Sarah, Glad you're starting to do Friday Reads. Restless Dolly is going on my TBR. The sheep farming setting reminds me of the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchet which is my current fantasy series, I'm starting # 4 tonight as my last book for Middle Grade March.
@@YourTrueShelf Thanks for noticing. Don't know if I've mentioned it but I'm non sighted. My brain has trouble processing concepts that are to expansive. What this means for my taste in fantasy is that I prefer a soft magic system with traditional tropes and creatures. Pratchett not only plays with tropes but he's also teaching you something.
@@amy8458 no, you've never told me that before, I didn't know. Do you listen to audiobooks or do you have enough sight to read with reading aids, if that's not an intrusive question? I understand what you mean about soft magic systems and why they work for you the best.
@@YourTrueShelf Not intrusive at all. I listen to audio and e books using a Fire Tablet. On my laptop and phone I use text to speech. I used to read with a closed circuit TV but it became taxing. I also have spastic cerebral palsy. Now I only use it for drawing oracle cards . One of my self care practices.
Yay to more regular updates. You couldn't have summed up The Wren The Wren any better. I felt exactly the same. My library hasn't got a lot of non fiction books unfortunately. This week I've read the Hangman which was just weird I think it was trying to say a lot but it wasn't for me. I enjoyed And Then She Fell but the ending again went a little bit strange. Reading Night Bloom at the moment and it's a good read so far.
Ah thanks! Thank you for letting me know your thoughts so far 🙂 I would probably just try them if they're on the shortlist I think. I've been doing the non fic in audible so far, and have bought one on kindle too.
Definitely a fan of Friday Reads! The Wren, the Wren doesn’t sound like it’s for me although I enjoyed The Gathering many years ago. I’m not sure beautiful writing would be enough to get me through it. So interested to see what will be on the short list for the Women Prize in Non Fiction🤔
