Women's Prize Longlist Reaction and Discussion 

You are the first reaction video that I have watched that knew a lot of the books and loved a lot of the books. I needed that so thank you!! I can now move back into excitement about the list

i predicted 8 Lives cause I saw Monica Ali had blurbed it. Boss move. I got 4 right overall. Buzzing to see how many 5 stars you have on there already. I'm very intrigued by this year's list and looking forward to giving them all a go.

Loved seeing your reactions, you were so invested and that made it fun! And for some reason your disappointment while talking about the karen lord book kind of cracked me up 🙈 There are some you are definitely more excited for that others. This feels more like the traditional choices for the women's prize than the previous year, but keeping that diversity within the author selection which is nice to see.

I decided to start with reading Hangman and it is bizarre, but so far I don’t hate it. 😅 It’s still early days, so that could well change.

You've probably already read the entire long list by now 😂 but I would say I suspect Blue Beautiful World's publisher wrote the synopsis geared toward a popular audience, while Lord is usually more literary in her work - thought I can't speak for this one specifically. It didn't sound like her sort of thing to me tho, so I am hopeful the blurb isn't representive. otherwise as you say I know plenty of people who would like that books in the synopsis, but a terrible fit for the women's prize audience.

Good to hear your thoughts and positive reviews of the books you've read. I'm most interested in Brotherless Night. I've travelled in Sri Lanka so I'm excited to read a good historical fiction set there. Quiet a few others I'm also interested in too.

I had the same reaction to the Grenville novel. Actually, I said it sounds like unoriginal self-published bullshit. Hopefully it's better than that, but I may never know because it's not published here in the States and I'm not inclined to pay for shipping from the UK.

Ooh I just did a little video on these books. I felt like I was constantly like “I don’t know this book. I don’t know this book.” 😅 But I’ve got to start somewhere. I’m most excited about Trickster and Nightbloom, I think. Blue, Beautiful World sounds good to me! 😅 I am on the fence about Western Lane. I’ll probably read that pretty soon as it’s short and readily available. Let me just say, some of these books were a huge pain in the ass to get a hold of. 😅 Good video as always! Really looking forward to Brotherless Night after reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. But I feel there are so many incredible books on this list and the list is internationally diverse this year so looking forward to that too.

You know I have to confess that "The Blue, Beautiful World" Sounds like something I wouldn't mind picking up if I needed somethign quirky in middle of some of the heavier works. Like one of those things that is goin to be so out there it's brilliant or just a dumpster fire. But your reaction was pretty much mine in that "one of these things is noooot like the other, one of these things just dooooesn't belong, caaaan you tell me which thing is not like the ooother, before I finish my sooong." :p Love hearing that you had so many positive reactions to some on this list.

I only got 2 predictions right but my early prediction for this year is definitely a win for Anne Enright! 5th time lucky, surely? Tentatively intrigued by the list but there are few I don’t think will be for me. 📚

I have read three of these: The Wren, The Wren; Nightbloom; Western Lane. I got five of my predictions correct. I’m most excited to read Enter Ghost and Soldier Sailor. I think Anne Enright will win. Actually, I’ll be shocked if she does not win. Great job on this video!

I've watched a few reactions to this longest. The thing that strikes me most is how many lesser-known titles are on it. Lots of books people haven't read, know little about, or have never heard of. I love that. I'm most excited to read In Defense of the Act, 8 Lives, and Enter Ghost... and I'm really curious about Blue Beautiful World. I want to know what got it on this list. (It sounds like SF by someone who doesn't read SF. I am really skeptical that it handles this well-worn trope in an original way. )

I have reserved Nightbloom at the library. Bit of a wait though. Ordinary Human Failings is waiting for me to collect. Interesting list. No big hitters though.

I'm even more excited now that the list has the Scott tick of approval. I've read four, and have five on order. I hope to get to more of them in a few weeks as more trickle into the bookshops. Very keen to read Enter Ghost. I've also ordered a couple off the Stella prize list, having only read one so far.

Your excitement is infectious. I have only read Enter Ghost and The Wren The Wren but these bode well for the rest. Soldier Sailor next I think and then we'll see. And don't fret about comments when life is stressful. You could just like them all to acknowledge them.
