Thank you and Shannon for reminding me of fried green tomatoes!! As a Canadian, my Mother use to cook them, but I never asked her for the recipe. I really miss both Mom and Dad. As a Veteran, I think of all my Brothers and Sisters every day!! God bless and stay safe!!
My momma’s from Kentucky and she always fried them in bacon grease. Yum yum. Come to think of it we always had a can of baking grease by the stove. She flavored everything with it. 🤗🤗
Years ago I heard of fried green tomatoes. I picked some from the garden. Fried them, too sour did not like them. Tried them in a restaurant a couple times, too sour did not like them. Ordered some in a restaurant in Memphis Tennessee they were delicious. Always wandered what they done deferent. Came across your video and found out the whole secret is the sugar. They are really good. Thank you Cowboy Kent. My tomato crop was a bust this year in NW Oklahoma. Now it is October my plants are loaded with green tomatoes.
Nicely done. Things tend to get done if you cook them long enough. A big thanks for remembering our service men and women on the 4th. Bless you both. See you on the trail. Mike and Rosie, Shelton, WA
Fried green tomatoes were one of my grandmother's favourites. She has been gone many years now but thank you Kent for bringing back some sweet memories.
Texas born , Texas raised , fried anything is good .... you can fry shoelaces and with the right spices , nothing will be left ...Great video Mr Rollins ...one of my favorite dishes
I will have to try this one. I like fried green tomatoes, but I have tried the basic recipe with a firm red tomato, and it tasted great! Like crunchy tomato soup!
Momma & I love fried green tomatoes. We worked in festival foods at Dollywood a couple of years ago. During the fall festival I was the primary fry cook and momma and other ladies (guys could do it, but the ladies usually beaded them better) prepped many many pounds of tomatoes per day for several weeks! We used panko for the crunch. We offered helpings of tomatoes with a sauce made in-house and also a green tomato BLT on house made bread...we couldn’t keep up. Thanks for sharing with all of us.
OMG...Oh my gravy. My mouth was watering again! We love us some fried green matters here in Ga. (Hey, I liked that musical tour of the country side while you were cooking, too!) Happy 4th of July, Y'all 🇺🇸
trryhin. Yes. I grew up in Texas west Texas we had them all the Time !!!!! I still love them ! Fried chicken also salad and some Watermelon !! Eeeee haaaaaaa! Cowboy!!!!
Ocala was Fort Repose in the great atomic war book of 1959 called, Alas Babylon. If you have read that could you share if any of the streets or place names are real or if Stewart changed those as well as Ocala's name? Well, do so after frying up a mess of green tomatoes!
I am a Floridian and I still live here I love it but I’ve always when I went to Hawaii but wow from Ocalla to Hawaii wow watching this video is going to make me want to do some fried green tomatoes tomorrow I hope you’re blessed there just wanted to say hello from Florida to another Floridian wish I was in Hawaii to🌴🌴🌴
My maters are just about ready for a try. I can’t wait, by Sunday I should have a couple ready. God bless our men and women who defend this country. And God bless you and Shannon for keeping a great attitude and making this world a better place one good tip and/or recipe at a time!
Happy Independence Day to you Kent and Shannon! My best friend for over 40 years, who was also my matron of honor, used to make these for me sometimes when we would have lunch at her home. She did not use cornmeal - or sugar - but they were still outstanding. How I miss her since she has gone to her reward!
That sure looks delicious! Fried green tomatoes are something that never gets old. There are so many different seasonings you can add that will change the flavor. Keep up the great work. Happy 4th of July to you guys too. Stay safe out there.

Likely a zillion others have mentioned the Whistle Stop Café, but it really is an all time favorite of mine. We live a stone's throw from it and know secret 'is always in the sauce' and in a great recipe- like yours C. Kent! Live long and prosper!
Wow Kent you just keep getting better and better I had these back in the 60s growing up my mom I made them but people nowadays don't know what Fried Green Tomatoes is, I mean they never heard of it, thanks for this video man I'm going to give it a try you can come to my house cook for me anytime lol have a great day
Kent....I love ya man!!!! But from an old boy who hails from Mississippi...and original kin from Louisiana....here in Missouri we just can't fathom the sugar. But hey...each to his own. You still are a kick butt cook!!! Keep the awesome videos coming!!!! AIEEEEEEE!!
As an Alabama country girl I can’t abide sugar on my fried green tomatoes cornbread or biscuits. But my sister in Tennessee puts sugar in everything. To each his own. They do look good. Have you ever tried cubing the green tomatoes and mixing okra and potatoes fried them together like pan fried potatoes with a little onion. It’ll make you want to slap your Mama!
Wow Cowboy Kent you outdid yourself! This is the best looking platter of fried Maters i ever seen! Thank you so much! I wanna try this recipe..GOD bless you & Your precious wife I'm a country girl lives in city now but raised where the country cooking was so good..A Mississippi girl!
I remember when I was a kid my great grandma in Dayton Ohio had a garden in her backyard and we would pick the green tomatoes to make this. Thank you for the recipe.
It all came back to me- my father use to fry up green tomatoes and only me and dad would eat them- sister and mom wouldn’t have nothing to do with them- I guess I’m in the hunt for green tomatoes- they were terrific!!- something like your videos!!
My husband had so many fried green tomatoes when he was a kid and would not consider is making them......changed his mind today...wants to try your recipe...Thank you.
I love fried green tomatoes. My mom was from Kentucky and she always put sugar on ours. My whole family likes them this way. I canned some sliced green tomatoes. You put the slices in a wide mouth pint jar, 1 teaspoon salt. Cover with boiling water and put the jar lid on. Done. Don’t process. I’m fixing some today that are 2 years old. Just a little soft but not bad. Mouths watering just thinking about it. God bless you, Shannon, Beag n Duke.
That's a good size garden your neighbors got there Kent, coming close to a truck patch ! 😊 That be a good neighbor to have for sure ! One thing about living in southern Arizona, I can have good vine ripe tomatoes all winter long, and lots of green ones too ! Some good eating there ! Done got hot enough now that they're burning up so better gather all the green ones and fry some up ! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍 👍 P. S. Old Glory flying in the background sure looks great, thanks ! 😊
Your Mom and Grandma must have known my Mom and Grandma!! They fixed the fried green tomatoes and fried chicken on Saturday afternoon! We ate supper under the oak trees and enjoyed the Summer season and the fresh from the garden veggies! Brings back so many memories! Have a safe and Happy 4th to you and Shane!
When you got that sledge outta the truck I about spit my coffee out of my mouth. Thanks Ken and Shannon for the recipe. I love fried green tomato sammiches and gonna try your version. Can't believe you dont have a show on FoodNetwork.
I can't get enough fried green tomatoes. The greener the better. Black Crim are sweet for this. Mother was born in 1929. Learned most of my cooking from her. Good oakie comfort foods. Thank you.
I like mine sliced paper thin and just lightly dredged with flower and then fried until crisp. They're almost like chips and make a great sandwich with a bit of mayo. I also like to give my zuck's the same treatment.
I had plenty of fried tomatoes growing up in California and Illinois. My Grandmother from Wisconsin would make them before the frost hit. My Mom was from Oklahoma...go figure. Don't claim them for the south. Oklahoma is south, it's Midwest, it's west...….it has a border with Colorado, just across the Cimarron river. I live in the deep south, just 3 miles south of the Alabama border and ya fried tomatoes in the summer is a staple, but, to claim them for just the south is not correct and borders on bragging.
This is my new favorite video of yours. Not only because I love fried green tomatoes, but because you went from farm to table AND had all those gorgeous scenery shots. I enjoyed the transition music, too. Great job! I'm from Louisiana, grew up on the Red River in Shreveport, and I dip my fried 'maters in remoulade. :)
Best way to eat a tomato!!! Never tried the sugar step but I'll give it a go next time I fry up some of them green maters. My wife has told me to keep watching your videos too. She said I've learned a lot from you. Cant wait for the next video!
I want to try these. My wife has said she loves them but has never made me them. She says she has never made them, I told her you have this recipe I want to get trying. Thank you for sharing another good one for us, it is going to be yummy..
Thanks for the video. I live in New England so I didn't grow up having these however I have made them a couple times and they were too tart for my liking. Thanks for the tips on using tomatoes with some color and sprinkling with sugar. I will give these another try as the tomatoes in my garden should be ready soon. Happy 4th to you as well.
I was born and raised in GA but moved to Colo, the one thing I miss is FGT, people out here don't know what they're missing but I've never heard of putting sugar on them, if I ever get some I'm trying your recipe, your videos are awesome, I've told myself that I have to get your book, thanks Kent and God bless you and your wife
I HATE tomatoes! RED ones that is! but I LOVE fried green tomatoes!!! Can't get enough of them in the summer! My mom gets on to me for picking all her green tomatoes!! LOL She says she aint gonna have any ripe ones to can if I keep pickin the green ones!
try some fried red tomatoes but still firm. Not so tart and you don't have to ruin the fried green tomatoes with sugar. I guess Cowboy Kent was raised on the sissy side of the prairie.
I felt the same way when I was your age. Loved it when mom fried green tomatoes, but hated red tomatoes. I put out my first garden that was 100 percent mine when I was about 14. I tried one of the ripe ones with salt and loved it. Maybe it was different because I'd been nurturing these plants since spring. Whatever it was I've been hooked since. Spent a lot of time when I was younger with a salt shaker and pocket knife eating off the vine.
I'm stoppin' by EVERY Cowboy Kent video I can today and lettin' the world know how UNBELIEVABLY GOOD his Red River Ranch Original Seasoning is!!! I haven't tried his other stuff (YET!), but his Original is CRAZY good! I'm not lyin....if I didn't like it I would just not comment. I sure wouldn't come here and sound like a pitch man! lol. But seriously, folks...I've been cookin' 35 years, and I've tried just about every seasoning, spice, and rub you can imagine. Kent's is unique, truly different and awesome. Go to his site and grab ya a bottle or five. You will be glad ya did!
does this mean that you are gonna bake us a green tomato pie next? fried green tomatoes no sugar for this iowa boy and if ya can in bacon grease. mmmm mmm yummy
That's a nice twist on fried green tomatoes croutons Mesquite seasoning you got my attention that is some beautiful scenery out your way happy 4th Kent and Shannon
Cowboy up, BUT OUT ON ON MY TRAILS IN AZ WE JUST DON'T FIND MATERS GROWING WILD,, SO WE COOK UP SOME GREEN CACTUS. YUMMY KNOCK OFF THOSE THORNS IN THE FIRE FIRST FOLKS, YEAH I'M SERIOUS, IT'S THE COWBOY WAY ✝️🇺🇲
Sapo I'm from California but I was raised in a dust bowl family and my southern granny would have spit fire if she saw sugar put on those tomatoes. She taught us to use cornmeal and fry them in bacon grease. She was also a firm believer that sugar in cornbread was cake not cornbread!
We thank you, Kent and Shannon Rollins. Dad was a Navy Corpsman attached to the Marines, oldest brother was in the army, next oldest brother was in the Navy, next oldest brother was in the Air Force and I was Coast Guard. We have all the bases covered with this family.

I grew up in southern North Carolina, my granddaddy taught me to put sugar on sliced tomatoes over 50 years ago. Been sprinklin' the bad boys with the sweet stuff ever since. Thanks for sharing - God bless.
