*UPDATE* Check out the new & improved Part 2 here: • Friedman BE-100 Deluxe...
Playthrough of two of the finest amps out there. Let me know what you think of the amps in the comments!
Check out the BE-100 Deluxe Here: www.zzounds.com/a--3978724/it...
Gear Chat: 0:00
Friedman BE-100 Deluxe: 1:33
Marshall JCM800: 6:02
Signal Chain:
Les Paul Custom Silverburst - Stock
Pedalboard (Pedals used: Xotic BB Preamp & BOSS DD-500)
Friedman Buffer Bay
Friedman BE100 Deluxe
Marshall JCM800
Suhr Reactive Load
Universal Audio Apollo 8p
Logic Pro X
Celestion Neo Creamback 412 C Hi-Gn All+Room - IR
Waves rVerb - Stereo
Kept the EQ raw because I don't want to change the basic sound of the amp. If I were putting this in a mix, I'd probably clean up the high end a bit. Sounds unreal double tracked though!

Excellent vid my dude. Only note I would make is I think gear shootouts like this work better when you intercut the two amps, pedals, guitars whatever. So play a riff on one amp then switch to the other, then back to the first for the next riff then back to the second etc. Makes it much easier for the viewer to get a feel for how they stack up against each other! Other than that, great playing, beautifully recorded! All sounds awesome!

I personally find it harder to find good soloing tones than good rhythm, and for me soloing is a lot more fun than chugging two or three strings, that's why I usually test amps for 99% solo tones because I know once I find the sweet spot, all I have to do is turn down the mid and gain knobs and it's instant power chord mayhem bliss

I briefly owned a JCM800 in the mid 90s but because I had spent many years playing solid state amps, I was used to getting a good, high gain sound at low volume. The 800 sounded thin, buzzy & dry at low volume. I bought it cheap and quickly sold it cheap. Man I wish I still had it. However, I'm very happy now with my DSL40c. It's more versatile & higher gain than an 800. It also sounds great at reasonably low volume and it has built in reverb. It's the amp I always wanted. PS. I also had an early 70's metal panel 50watt head that a good friend basically gave me(for $200!). It sounded fμ¿king AMAZING! However, I severely hurt my back a year later and lost it in pawn. Although I regret selling the 800, it's that early 70's Marshall that still haunts me. She's the one that got away. Btw, Great tones here bro!

@MrTransparentOne 4 года назад
Very true on the Marshall. I have an old JMP MKII Master Lead 50w and it is a bitch to get the master in a good spot when not playing with a band. Although it does seems to have considerably more chime than 800's I've played through and less tight gristle (more open tone to build on). I keep the gain down and push the amp with EP Booster and Wampler Tumnus Deluxe (increase the headroom and manage volume levels on the Tumnus). That's been getting me in AIC territory if needed while still giving great clarity/string definition in high gain settings (also Bonamassa tone gets very close with a Carol Ann OD3 run in stereo with the Marshall - only missing the Van Weelden - ain't happening lol). Actually the Carol Ann seems to hit everything the Marshall is lacking, so it fills out pretty well. I don't play much of the super heavy stuff these days (have a VH4 collecting dust in the closet for this). I did like the Friedman better than the VH2 in you prior video for overall warmth and lack of harshness in the signal. I had the same problem with my VH4 as they come cold biased and I worked over the phone with Peter to warm bias the VH4. After that it softened and warmed up quite a bit (sounds much rounder while still giving that VH4 3d accuracy). Also the VH4 has only sounded good to me through a Diezel NY Vintage style 4x12 with rear loaded vintage 30's. In fact nearly every amp I play through that cab sounds considerably better (the Marshall is running through the Diezel bottom currently). The Carol Ann is an odd beast (very little compression) and seems to favor a Celestion Creamback. Anyway I was always a purist and didn't want pedals in my signal but the EP Booster and Tumnus Deluxe changed those views. They even seem to make my old Fender Deluxe Reverb sound like old Eagles tracks or ZZ Top Duegello era tones. Thinking I still would play the current setup over the Diezel if I was going to play anything heavy other than newer extreme metal (never been a fan of that edgy dry attack without clarity). Freidman stuff seems to be a great balance though, but if I buy any more amps it will be a Matchless HC 30 (into all things chime these days; that said I am 51 now and getting pretty grey:). I should probably get the VH4 listed for sale one of these days as she deserves a great home for a player that would put her to good use. She is a 2003 I believe and I think that is the best era of VH4 to my ears (has the clarity and punch the blue face lacks and seems less aggressive than the later models). The VH4 was Peter's masterpiece and IMHO he hasn't surpassed that amp since. The howling/eerie feedback is like no other amp on the planet and Adam Jones will have forever put Diezel on the map with tones you just can't find in any other amp. Agreed though in that the Friedman is probably the better choice for a one amp quiver with more warmth, classic tones, and versatility over the Diezel. The Custom Audio, Suhr, and old Bogner Ecstasy Blue amps seemed pretty awesome for hard rock as well. I would likely trade the VH4 for a Custom Audio OD 100 although not a huge fan of the clean sound (decent, but not truly great). Hence why I ended up with the Carol Ann OD3. The Carol Ann has some of the best cleans on the planet, but does sacrifice a bit of the Custom Audio accuracy (liking more of the more woman tone voicing on the Carol Ann for current playing). Here's a good clip of the Custom Audio OD 100 and Suhr PT 100 (sorry in advance, nice sounding amps and it's only money, life is short! Now that I think about it maybe I can sell something and get an OD 100 or Suhr PT 100 lol:) The clean sounds pretty decent on the PT 100... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OImr92beyIk.html. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QGErfbbJOqg.html

Thanks so much for the super detailed info. This is the whole reason I started putting videos up! The PT100 is definitely a beast. The other guitar player in the band I play in uses the newer PT100 and it's a great amp! When I listen back to this video now it sounds little harsh and brittle in the top end, I think due to the IR that I'm using. I'm going to do a "round 2" video coming up pretty soon. What year is that silver burst? Probably my favorite of all your guitars! Just scored a great deal on a mint 2012 Les Paul Custom in Ebony. Fairly confident it has a richlite board based on the serial number. Super cool regardless 😎

Personally i would go with the friedman just because of the build quality, but both are just phenomenal.

The Small Box is an outstanding amp, the channel switching seems to be just right. The 800 is still the business. Record with 800, gig with the friedman

I read a lot of people saying Friedman’s don’t cut that well in a mix....which I think is largely user error. However, haven’t got to bring mine out since this Covid mess started. In your experience, is there a noticeable difference in live cut between these two?
@ZachWish
@ZachWish 3 года назад
Yeah, definitely user error. If you're not cutting through with a Friedman, you're doing something wrong. They can both be dialed to be very up front sounding. They're pretty different amps though. The Marshall is very stiff and bold and the bottom end can get a bit loose as you push the gain up high, where the Friedman is a lot more pleasing under the fingers in my opinion. A boosted 800 is a pretty undeniable tone though! But I wouldn't worry about either amp cutting. They'll both get the job done. Thanks for checking out the video!
@occasionalcrunch

Both amps sound good. But they can sound great. What you have to do is to put 12AY7 pre-amp tubes. That will give you really fat tone and super focused. Right now tone is lost in too much gain as 12AX7 sound harsh here .2 Thanks for making this video.
@ZachWish
@ZachWish 4 года назад
Yeah, I think this recording sounds a bit harsh. I made a part 2 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o7G9K2WhrOw.html where I think they sound a lot nicer. Thanks for checking out the video!

The Friedman sounds a bit brighter, but otherwise they both sound very similar. Both are excellent amps that really fit your playing style and influences. I'd think in a 2 guitar band, these would play well together, but hey since you have the gear, run them in stereo and let it rip!! Keep up the great work, your videos are excellent.
@ZachWish

Thanks a bunch for the kind words. I agree with everything you said. It's funny though, in the room, the Marshall is a bit brighter to me, but very similar. My main band is a trio, so I'm always looking to sound as big as possible. Stereo rig is the dream, but I haven't mustered up the energy to bring two heads and cabs to a show yet! One of these days.

A volume pedal for the 800 will open up a whole new world for you and that amp. The 800 with a volume pedal to clean it up and a od pedal to kick it up a notch will sound way better and be way cheaper than the Friedman....
@guitarexpert2245
@guitarexpert2245 4 года назад
This is so true. The only beef with the 800 is it has to be cranked too loud for it to thicken up by then it's just ear piercing. The 'Friedmans i don't think have this issue. But tone wise .... 800's. They were recorded on more records than one can imagine.

How’s the taper on the newer Marshall Amos? Decent at home volume?
@ZachWish
@ZachWish 2 года назад
Nice smooth taper on the newer Marshalls that I've played. Especially so on the Silver Jubilee, to the point that I was wondering if something was wrong with it haha. That amp didn't start getting decently loud until the master was around 11 or 12 o'clock which isn't like any other Marshalls that I'd played. Great amps though! Thanks for watching.

@markn4526
@markn4526 3 года назад
I think LP Customs generally sound brighter than LP Standards. Due to the ebony fretboard, I think. Standards sound better for low to medium gain, classic rock sounds as where Customs sound better for higher gain, heavier rock sounds. Personally, I like both! I'm assuming your LP has stock pickups...490R and 498T? By the way...great playing and great song choices for the demo!
@philsmith3019
@philsmith3019 3 года назад
True. Customs chug better than Standards. They lend themselves to aggressive music a lot easier. On the other hand, Standards tend to have nicer faster 60’s necks, if you’re into that.

JCM 800 sound great with two or three in series LIVE turned up more than half way. But Friedman just has them beat if just for consistency in build/tone quality. JCM's tone is not the same on every unit. Friedman? you can bet on it. I'll stick with My Mesa MarkV. for right now though.....although its in the shop again LOL. great tone & chops. You'd make any band better.
