Got this pedal just because I was tone-chasing Jerry Cantrell/AIC on a budget - little did I know how good this pedal would be and how popular it became.
I have russian made BE-OD clone and I found this pedal does not like being plugged into a dirty channel. It generates a lot of noise in this case. Only for very clean channels or FX loop. That is the way it makes far less noise even at max gain. With my setup at 12 o'clock gain position it is almost noisless.
I have the BE-OD Deluxe and absolutely love it. Quite versatile, indeed. I'm wanting to get the Marshall origin 50, and this gives me a pretty good idea of what sorts of tones I'll be able to achieve compared to the Peavey Valveking I'm currently using. Thanks for all the excellent demos! You're quite helpful and just a phenomenal player!
I run a marshall origin 20. The 50 isn't necessary if your using it for a preamp. "Unless your full time gigging" I personally feel like I get a better pure clean tone from 20. I run the abasi pathos(literally almost identical to the friedman same eq and tight edge settings) sounds bright pure and incredible
I have the be deluxe od its the same as the be od but two channels and a mid control. Takes time to dial it in like a amp but its hands down the best od I have ever played . I run itin a clean amp and set one channel with a bit more volume and gain and the other channel for rhythm. This gives me three channels and some times I run a clean boost into it . I dont know why youtgettin all the noise but mine is no where nearthat noisy.but my amp is also much cleaner than how yours was set . I dont use this like a od pedal to push the amp this is more like a preamp in a box . Again best distortion pedali have ever played ,very amplike feel and natural sounding. I think it works best in a clean amp
Interesting. I use the BEOD in the front of a Dr.Z or Deluxe Reverb on my artist's songs that require a mid/high gain solo. I have not experienced any noise, even with a Strat or Tele.
It's the amp he's using- it's never clean, it's always broken up- and when you hit it with a really hot pedal- this is what you get. There's a back plate on this pedal with a trim pot underneath- you can turn down the available gain there. If you're going to use an always dirty, really hot Marshal amp- actually two of them, like Elmo- you need to turn the gain down. Or any kind of really hot, always dirty platform- this pedal is going to be too much for them. That said- the amp you have is making a difference to- that's a very high end, really nice amp. They're made differently- they do not utilize negative feedback- and don't ask me what in the world that means but that's what the guy who makes them says when you ask why they sound and react differently. Specifically, I asked him how he managed to get such a clear, pristine, clean tone with very little noise even when you add gain. I thought it had a noise gate built in but, he says it's because he doesn't use "negative feedback".
This pedal has a trim pot in it that allows you to dial back the available gain- in case you have a really hot pickup or amp- I think that's you Elmo. Not the pickups- the amp- I've heard you say it's always dirty and I can hear it in your "clean tone"- it's not clean. I think this pedal is too much for it- even with the gain all the way down, just using the volume- it was past overdriven and into distortion territory. It sounds cool but, it would be hell to control like this. Randy Rhodes played that way though- you could see him rush to kill his volume on his guitar at the end of every song- to avoid all the feedback and squealing. Ppl say he over played, that he stepped all over Ozzy's lyrics- he had to, if he stopped his guitar would start screaming.
That’s a noisy pedal indeed! Besides that, seems like a keeper. Excellent demo of what apparently might be an overdrive pedal which could be considered quite versatile.
To be fair, it is meant to be used into a completely clean channel, it already has a ton of gain that can absolutely be your main distortion, it's not really meant to stack on top of a cranked or already distorted amp. And the noise is definitely way more tolerable and not as bad this way
Something is wrong in that setup I have the same pedal and have used it in front of my amps’ dirty channels and it is dead quiet. I use a normal Boss 9V AC adapter. No noise gate is required.
Hi Luis! Nothing wrong there. The compressor I used makes the noise worse. Also, every OD makes noise in front of the Plexi (at least on higher gain settings).
Could be a QA issue at Friedman. I had this pedal and it hissed AND buzzed at 12oc on the gain. It's marketed as a very dirty OD, more of a distortion pedal, and I tried to use it as such (as did Elmo here). I sent it back, but I really wished it was quieter, because the sound was actually quite good into a low end Fender Champ X2 head set to clean.
If I put my orange Boss distortion above 1-2 o’clock on the level it gets a lot of noise...for high gain should start with dial maxed and bring up the volume from around 3 until it sounds good without the noise
@@trumpetplayerdude9838 This duo made the sound a monster but honestly this amp has very killer gain with a 4 × 12. I have a 1×12 and use this amp only with Mooer Radar and TC Gmajor 2 in the FX loop. I achieve EVERY tone of my favorite albums with a suitable IR which I've found on the RU-vid.
Man that thing was noisy. It sounds great though. A friedman amp is something I would love, but just can't justify being that I'm not digging regularly and if I want to record there are cheaper ways. Have never seen you play the Schecter. Too cool. I desperately need a u string to make noise with 😂.. I have seen some RGs from japan at reasonable prices and might go that route, or just build a strat 7 string with a Gotoh trem. Anyway, on my phone at least that pedal sounds great, but a Noise suppressor is a must I believe. Your strhmon sounds as good to me and is much quieter with its built in NS. Would love to see you try one of the ISP preamp with the built in noisegate. Not the expensive ISP, but theh have one in the 300, or 350 range. Thanks for another cool video my friend. Hey, there's a guy from Estonia that sells Finish watches. I might have to get one. They look cool. 🤣😂🤟
Cheers man :) The noise got a bit worse than it was because of the compressor. Besides there was so much gain there that it's hardly a surprise it was noisy.
Great video :-) You should try out 2 high gain pedals designed in Sweden. Raptor designed by Tommy Folkesson and One Control Jubilee Red designed by Björn Juhl :-)
Great review Elmo, like always. Question: Regarding the lack of mid control... Do you think the "be od" is too scooped and could get lost in the mix playing live? Cheers.
Don't have that noise with my gear, are you sure it comes from the pedal ? Perhaps a problem with this particular one ? As someone else said, perhaps because used with an already pushed amp and not a clean one ?
10-15 minutes is a good length for a review. You should try to get an overhead camera to show the pedal settings as you are playing. The pedal is too noisy for me, it was hissing at the lowest gain setting....no bueno. Your review was good though :)
I don't know how it happened Elmo, but its been a while since I've been to your channel and I see,(gasp!), that you have changed out your fave Yngwie overdrive for some Strymoin goodies.I was sure you woulod be playind those DOD 250 Overdrive type of pedals to your grsave! I think knowing what suits your preferences even better than the Friedmn BE-OD is the newest Friedman offering, t6heir Smallbox OD. Why? Because it isc pased on their 50 watt Smallbox amp, a lovely more vintage voiced Plexi type amp. I have the Smallbox50 Combo, a hell of an amp, and prefer it's less gainy tones than the flag ship BE 100 highly regarded killer of an amp. The Smallbox pedal has sounded great in every demo I have seen and its lower gain tones woulod be right up your alley. If you buy your gear from a shop with an excellent return policy, I trhink you owe it to yourself to try one! I likie what I have heard ofcit enougth that for some unknown reason, I amthinking of buying one even knowing I own the amp! Cheers man, I'm subscribing so I don't go any duration again missing out any reviews or gear changes!
Hey Elmo. R u sure the trim pot is set 2 factory default? I run JCM800s and a JMP and have been using 1 of these for a while. It's nowhere near that noisy usualy. It doesn't usually sound that spongy either. Some awesome playing as usual. luv yr work
i am running this pedal on 9v at 3.15 wattage and keep getting a ticking sound when i am not actively playing. the power light also flickers. has anyone encountered this issue. ive looked all over the internet and cant seem to find an answer.
i have my doubt in the pedal when i hear this horrible hush noise,is there another pedal that i can buy that is cheaper and less noisy...?Also great video👌 i'm really kind of not couraged into buying the Friedman,or is it the set-up,i like to hear your comment ☺️
@@FACTBOT_5000 - it seemed very noisy and lacks any lower driven transparency. It’s a distortion / high gain pedal rather than an Over Drive. Believe me, I got what I thought the lowest gain Friedman pedal is - the Dirty Shirley - and it’s still loaded with gain. Super tight and focused just like the amps... too tight imo. Think Angry Charlie meets MXR Badass.
@@oldguyjammin9732 I see. Yes, its definatelt a medium/high gain distortion pedal that works good into a clean amp, if that's the sound you want, but not so much as an overdrive in a dirty amp. I agree, too noisy to use in a dirty amp, but much quieter in a clean amp. Its definately missing that low gain transparency you would want from an overdrive, and more gain on tap than you would need for that application. Have you found something that works for you?
@@FACTBOT_5000 - My top ODs (that are not distortion pedals) are OCD, Mesa Flux Drive, Walrus 385, SD Killing Floor. They’re stackable and work well in any situation and have that transparency aspect we’re after.
Hi Elmo! Love your videos! How would you compare the BE to the Fender Malmsteen pedal? Specifically, I would like a high gain pedal with some treble/presence control to mitigate inherent fizz at high gain. Does the BE get as bright as the Malmsteen pedal does on full?

@@Xyrium wanted to hear what it sound like it again after I sold it two years ago and was surprised to see this guy reviewed it now when it's old. I also watch some of his videos so when I saw Elmo I clicked as I am a big yngwie fan
@@joshmuz9018 I hear ya....I also dig Yngwie. Guitarists and OD pedals are like drummers trying to position their double bass pedals....it's just an ongoing struggle for perfection. 😁
@@MrPolevaulter Revv 4 taitaa olla maasta loppu tällä hetkellä, mutta jos Turun suunnalla asustelet ja testaaminen kiinnostaa niin lainaaminen onnistuu mainiosti 😊
Because it's a Friedman and would likely cost a fortune to buy, so it's beyond me why there isn't a gate in it as well. Just a few extra components, pence to make it correct..!!!! I do quite like it though when it's not hissing it's tits off.
@@MrPolevaulter Hi Elmo. Could you make a video about the AC Noises Respira one of this days? I believe it is a great modulation pedal. Besides that, could you recommend me a non noisy distortion or high gain overdrive just cause I can't practice anywhere else than in my house?. Greetings. Nice youtube channel which I always follow. Norman.
Gave up when a saw the single coils, then creamed my pants when i saw the humbuckers, then gave up for good when i saw the 7 strings. Thanks for nothing.
Plenty of other demos of other players using Les Pauls and more traditional humbucker equipped guitars out there. Personally, I appreciate the fact that Elmo does break out his 7 string in a lot of his demos.
