Equality of outcomes is in conflict with freedom, since it requires that the freedom of some people be restricted. Societies that put equality before freedom are left with neither. Societies that put freedom before equality are left with a great deal of both.

I've seen a lot of these little videos lately, and it's funny because I recognize all the quotes from start to finish because I've always been a Milton Friedman fan, and so for me these entire videos are effectively "famous quotes" given animation, but for most of the people watching it it's more or less their first exposure to Milton Friedman. For anyone confused, Milton Friedman is a nobel-prize winning economist who died a few years ago, who has always been an advocate for economic freedom. These videos are people taking snapshots of things Milton Friedman once said that explain simple economic truths and theories in eloquent, succinct language and animating a video in the background to help contextualize what's being said. Milton Friedman was a lover of history, facts, and examples and was one of the most gifted debaters of the 20th century, but these quotes are grabbed specifically to grab his summarized main points minus all the minutiae of his arguments. "Those who put equality before freedom will end up with neither. Those who put freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both." That statement always gives me the feels. Freedom is a beautiful thing. By the way, I notice some of you guys are arguing about the statements about starting the same place. Friedman isn't trying to imply that we all do start in the same place, he's simply pointing out that the efforts of government intervention are not focused on trying to get everyone to the same starting point (which might be less problematic), they are focused on getting everyone to the same ending point, and there is absolutely no way to accommodate that without severely restricting freedoms. Of course, we all know this. This is well-known on both sides of the aisle. The question is whether it's a good idea to restrict freedom in order to achieve equality (or greater equality) of outcomes for across diverse sets of individuals. By and large, liberals tend to lean towards more restrictions on freedom in order to shoot for more equality of outcomes, whereas conservatives usually lean in the opposite direction. Which approach is better? Milton Friedman's central thesis is that restricting freedom won't actually get you the equality you're hoping for and will end up making everyone - rich and poor - worse off. Why? Well to find that out you should type "Milton Friedman" or "Milton Friedman debate" or "Milton Friedman lecture" or something of that nature into the RU-vid search bar. Do it. It's a good time.

@@khaos5085 But thats competition. If you are born with a natural gift, how does another less advantaged compete ? By practice, by learning, by experience, etc. Competition is the idea that because someone is better than you at something does not mean you cannot be better than them eventually. It is the freedom of choice to choose to be better than them by practice and grinding or accept your current inferiority and conform with your place in society.

CookieCakeEater There are exceptions as there are in almost everything. But the hard truth is that many of us, including myself are given many many advantages. And many others don’t. And almost all of these people don’t have many if any options for upward mobility. No one likes being told they have privilege. Hell, it was hard for me to except. And it doesn’t mean your or my problems don’t matter. The issue of inequalities and privilege is completely separate from any issues we have. Both can be fixed and they don’t devalue each other. And don’t think I’m trying to undermine your or anyone else’s achievements. I’m sure you are a smart and hardworking man/woman/or other. But the more people prosper the better out country is. So why not make things just a little more fair for everyone.

@@ethandrover2278 so why should the government take oportunites away from people to be able to lift themselves out of poverty. You can't have a society based on eqaulity everyone is not the same. Some are smarter, some are hands on, some are athletic, some are entertaining the list goes on and on. The major problem of inequality is of government not because of some rich asshole living in a mansion up in the hills. The government has been trying to make things equal since the 60's not just a race issue but on economics as well.

If you push for equality of opportunity then it will lead to equality of out come, a stratified economy and society is the only sustainable choice. Because children from rich and poor house holds will never have the same equality of opportunity and that is perfectly healthy.

@@kaibean8046 I did not posit that claim. You've put words in my mouth. The question is why do they have those advantages, and how can we give everyone equal start. Not an equal finish. What do you mean?
@beckettthirion3147
@beckettthirion3147 4 года назад
Well by restricting freedom and wealth for those who have an abundance we can give others who don't have it more freedom and wealth. This entire argument hinges on the idea that in that race we start at the same point, and that's not true. The left side of politics doesn't want to make sure we end at the same point anymore (at least in America), the goal is to make sure we start at the same point so your wealth is based on effort and not luck. Edit: Also, as other comments have said, equality is not the same as equity. They are different things and mentioning one does not mean the other.

@anchuto

People are different. Some people get ahead by being smarter, more charismatic or simply by being born into advantageous circumstances. You may say it’s not fair, but is it not also unfair to deny them their right to live their lives however they chose? Truth is, it’s not fair or unfair, it’s just life. There will always be people who have more, it’s human nature to want more. Anyone who preaches equality is living in denial.

Thomas The Apostle, that is a very strong assumption that we have reached our limits of an ideal system. Pre-Enlightenment all scholars thought that they were in the best system. When they saw the violence and death that resulted from the emerging capitalist, liberal democracies (French Revolution) they feared the ideology and did there best to suppress it. That is because until that point in history it was assumed that the peasants were supposed to serve their lords (who ruled with Gods grace) and that it was the perfect system. Eventually the capitalist liberal democracies succeeded, but it took many tries and cost lots of lives. Is communism/socialism the next step? I have no idea. But I know for certain that the system can always be improved and that the desire for better is without a doubt a part of our human nature.

Mr. Chopsticks I agree with you. Rich people are rich for a reason. Even if you are gifted a billion dollars, without the proper knowledge of how to spend that money appropriately you will likely go bankrupt. However, I would recommend looking up the negative income tax from milton freeman if you would like to learn how to help the poor. His plan makes so much sense that nobody in congress would approve of this, barring perhaps Rand Paul.

No, it's just a statement of libertarian values. Not every statement of opinion constitutes propaganda, even if they're trying to spread or advertise their opinion to a large audience. Propaganda is a term usually reserved for when information is advertised in an intentionally misleading way so as to trick people into supporting a certain position. Right or wrong, it's hard to make the case that there's anything intentionally misleading in Milton Friedman's statements.
