Hey, welcome to the review for the Friedman JEL 20, the brand new 20 watt version of Jake E Lee's signature amp. You'll notice I didn't talk about Jake himself too much in the video although I did sprinkle in a few Badlands/Ozzy riffs. The reason for that is that the video would have been even longer if I started talking about Jake!
This video is more of a reference guide than a review...you'll be able to hear what this amp can do with just a couple pedals. I think the ground I covered is valuable to anyone considering purchasing the amp. As I stated in the video, this amp is super versatile even with only 2 channels. You'll see what I mean as you watch and listen.
I mentioned that on channel 2 with the gain knob pulled out that there was a high end "squawk" that was unpleasant on higher notes up the fretboard. But as I listened back on the video it wasn't really that noticeable to me. So either I'm imagining things or it sounded a little harsher here in the room. In a mix you'd probably never notice it anyway.
So my conclusion after playing the amp for about a week? It's awesome! If you are into to hard rock and metal, or blues rock you will love the amp...unless you need death metal level gain, which you can still achieve, but then maybe there would be better options for you guys. But if you are an 80's metal guy, buy it. If you are a Jake fan, buy it (duh), and if you lack either a killer JCM 800 tone or a wonderful Plexi tone in your arsenal this amp will fill that void.
I also own the Friedman JJ Jr (Jerry Cantrell amp) and love it, but these two amps sound very different...they cover different ground. Having both opens up a ton of musical tone options for live and recording.
Rock on!
