The backlash against mobile titles like this didn't really die down. At last E3 there was a pretty strong negative reaction to the second mobile C&C game being released, it was just far less noticeable given that Command and Conquer's fandom isn't nearly as large as Blizzard's/Diablo's.
I recall the backlash to the C&C mobile game being so strong that Genna Bain, the wife of the now deceased TotalBiscuit, said "I am so glad my husband isn't here to see this."
It's also that people expect that kind of crap from EA. The main reason people rebelled so hard as we see blizzard doing the same stuff EA does. And that frightens us

Yeah, Matt's just not getting it. If Marvel and Sony, hyped up a sequel to the Spider-Man game, showed some concept art, interviewed VA's, teased a cinematic. Then came on stage at E3 and revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as an exclusive mobile game. They absolutely deserve boos. And if they respond to said boos as "are you people too poor to afford smart phones?" they deserve more boos.
This is rare for me to honestly agree with Pat over Matt for once. You gotta understand if this was a free entry type of thing then yea maybe silence woulda been better but the people there actually paid to see this shit and this was their closer on top of that, the booing is justified.
You also have to take into account the fact that the relationship between Blizzard and their customers is kinda...tenuous right now. This Blizzcon being an unmitigated disappointment was the last thing they needed.

Seriously depends on how it's handled. When Nintendo, Bethesda, and Microsoft announced mobile entries in series like Animal Crossing, Elder Scrolls, and Gears of War, they made sure to then quickly confirm "we've got a new mainline entry in the works too so don't worry." Because of how they handled it those announcements didn't really get any major backlash (though Gears Pop did give us that hilarious Woolie moment). Blizzard handled it really poorly. As someone else said, has they just followed up Diablo Immortal with something like a Diablo IV teaser then fans would have been more likely to say "okay cool to know the next big one is on the way, maybe this mobile game will be fun for casual play in the meantime."

I think in a world where shit people show their opinions with death threats and hacking, booing is a VERY acceptable and welcomed thing. Its not harassment, its not dangerous, its a very simple "hey, we don't like this." Not to mention, in an industry where SO MUCH BS happens, many voices going "Hey, we don't like this!" is something we need more of.

It seems to me that some people are of the opinion that if a company makes tons of money, they're justified in whatever they do and should not be criticized.
I just realized, this was nearly the exact same situation that occured at the end of the Microsoft E3 conference, but thankfully they had the insight to reveal Gears 5 as well.
Pat's recollection of events is a little off, which might be what made Matt think the crowd was unfair. The announcement happened, people were kind of excited at the beginning when it was just "Hey look, it's Diablo." Then they started hinting at it being a mobile game, and the crowd was dead silent (so about as respectful as Matt wanted them to be). The boos only happened during the Q&A when the presenter answered that it was mobile only, which was when they retorted with, "What, do you guys not have phones?"
Which speaks volumes, because I've watched nearly every Blizzcon on totally legit streams, and I've seen some shit announcements but NEVER booing. You need to try REALLY hard at Blizzcon to get a negative response, but they somehow managed it.
I really liked how even though Pat and Matt had different view points on this topic, they still ended up defusing and agreeing on certain other aspects of the story. Feels like something we could all learn to do better in this day and age.

This all could've been fixed if they just had a black screen after that with a burning roman numeral "IV" and boom, would've made it a little better. Also Bethesda did that where they showed off Elder Scrolls: Blades but then quickly said "Elder Scrolls VI is being made too so don't worry." Also mentioning Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI are single player focused RPGs to calm down people who assumed Fallout 76 meant Bethesda was starting to turn more towards multiplayer focused games after not long ago making a big deal about how they're very single player focused overall.

But we wouldn't just hand this off to just anybody we didn't have faith in. We have something incredible for you really soon, but we strongly encourage you all to check out this game. But with Torchlight the response they have been giving for years was that they didn't want to be in direct competition with Diablo 3 while it was killing it. Which makes now the perfect time to announce it. It's been 6 years since Torchlight 2 and over a year since their last game release. Runic Games must have something they can show to the table at this point.

The best example of a proper mobile game is Fallout Shelter. Bethesda did that right since it was introduced in the middle of Fallout 4 reveal at E3, it was just a free to play game while people waited for fallout 4, plus, Bethesda made it from scratch with its own uniqueness.

I'm sure if at E3 2018, Capcom announced Devil May Cry on mobile, instead of DMC 5, we'd be getting a very different argument from Matt. Making franchises into mobile cash grabs may not effect your favorite game yet Matt, but it will and when it does it will really hurt.
Devs need to realize- mobile games are synonymous with the same distrust we had of "movie tie in game" years ago- hell, most movie tie in crap is going to mobile. The market is flooded with cheaply made, poorly designed, poor handling crap that is laden with micro-transactions. Just look at the dungeon keeper mobile game. So this CANNOT be the meat of your advertisement pitch- particularly when you are dealing with the hardcore fans willing to go to a con. These hardcore fans can be comfortable with such a game existing as a side thing.... but they came here on the whispers of diablo 4, and this was presented instead (it almost made it seem at first like this mobile game was drawing resources and preventing a diablo 4). I get that they didn't expect such a fierce reaction... but did they expect a warm one when they have these kinds of fears in the background?
Diablo 3 on the Nintendy Switch is the Diabli on the go! The poor ass souls who had to deal with the response for the choices of the Higher ups. Also, the response of the person saying "Check blizzard's past microtransaction history" must have forgotten that Overwatch existed.

The whole "You all have phones, don't you?" quote is so telling because it just speaks volumes to how business-minded they are. You just know they were patting themselves on the back coming up with the idea going "we know people like Diablo, and while *some* people play on xBox's and *some* people play on PC etc etc, EVERYONE has phones! Therefore everyone will buy it! We can't lose!"
I feel I should point out that in the immediate aftermath of the announcement silence was what greeted Diablo Immortal. It's only in the Q and A where we start seeing the spicy memes and boos, because one of the devs got testy with his audience not being super hyped about Flappy diablo.
Todd Howard did this better, what happened was he announced 'Fallout 4 is coming out everyone!', then "while you wait, here's a phone game to keep you guys occupied Fallout Shelter!" thus people were happy and hyped and did play the fallout shelter

Since Matt disagreed with the concert analogy, here's a different one: Let's say you're a big wrestling fan. The WWE is putting on a ppv and you spend a bunch of money for a ticket, a bunch of money to travel to the show, and a bunch of money for a hotel. Finally, you're at the show. You've got your seat, you've got a drink in your hand, and you're beyond hyped, and up comes the match you were looking forward to the most. Two of your favorite wrestlers (just off the top of my head, let's saaay...AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura) having a big ppv match, with you there to see it live. You watch as each man makes his way to the ring, memories of all the great matches these two had back in the good old days flooding through your mind. You take a deep breath and focus your eyes on the ring, giddy with anticipation of what these guys might do this time... And then they hit each other in the dick a few times and the bell rings. You know what a perfectly acceptable and fully expected reaction to that totally made-up situation would be? Fucking boooooos. And that's essentially what Blizzard did: stood in front of a hyped-up crowd of eager fans and starting hittin' dicks.
You charge people $200 for tickets to BlizzCon and then you go out on stage and show them _this shit_ when you've been teasing a proper release. When they got the appropriate response to what was shown, they threw gas on the fire. Companies aren't entitled to your money. You do not owe them a sale, or money thru micro-transactions (which is the model of mobile games in the first place). Matt is wrong, boo them harder.
This game should have been marketed to Eastern markets, but putting it on the front stage of Blizzcon was aiming at the wrong audience. Some marketer should have intercepted this months ago. Alternatively, yelling "DIABLO 4 COMING SOON, BABY! Meanwhile, here's a mobile app!"
What sad is EA did the VERY SAME MISTAKE a couple month with Command and Conquer. Somehow Activision-Blizzard marketing team where so obvious to that it make face palmed so hard.
So I was actually there at Blizzcon. If absolute quiet is what Matt would have liked then he would have been fine with the actual reaction, which initially was actually dead silence (with scattered sounds of confusion). I agree with Pat more but he's miscommunicating what actually happened a bit. It wasn't so much the announcement itself that was met with outright boos, it was when that one guy asked if it was coming to PC or not in that now famous clip (which btw, the actual guy himself who asked that question, apparently a Diablo streamer himself, has commented about the whole thing on his youtube look up Lord Fluffy) and the reaction the two guys up there with Wyatt Cheng (the guy who was largely credited with saving Diablo 3, whose apparently a nice guy so it's sort of painful to watch him on the spot there.) further escalated with the "don't you guys have phones?!" comment just elevated the negativity to that level that by the time red shirt guy came up with the April Fool's comment, it was fanning flames by that point. It's kind of an important distinction to make because it's kind of necessary to understand the real reason for the backlash. The thing is that like you guys said most gamers have become numb to the whole idea of phone ports these days. Yeah, "on mobile" is sort of a dirty term, but it's not nearly the same drama starter in of itself as it was maybe some years ago because it's such a norm now. It's more the tone-deafness of announcing this thing, at an event Blizzard specifically built for their core, and being legitimately surprised that it wasn't well received. It's kind of complicated, but it's more the boiling point to a growing anxiety within the subculture surrounding Blizzard as a studio, a subculture carefully built and cultivated by both fans and Blizzard themselves over many years that there's an escalating erosion of all the things that have made Blizzard what they are and such a beloved studio by a supremely passionate group of people. Especially since the Activision merger, for obvious reasons. This studio and its fanbase practically prided itself on their strong, nearly symbiotic communication with eachother...the very thing Blizzcon itself represented to begin with. That they "get" their base. it's a built up goodwill that's so uniquely strong that it weathered the ill-fated Auction House in D3, Loot Boxes, and Hearthstone's whole existence...but I think Diablo Immortals might have been a bit of a breaking point because if the people in charge of this whole thing couldn't forsee that announcing a mobile installment of a loved series to an audience starved for new content for it, at their special event specifically built for their core...which is largely PC based, was probably not going to go over well...then it kind of suggests that whoever's in charge doesn't get their fanbase anymore, or cares. One could say its an overreaction, and it is a bit of saltiness over not getting a Diablo 4 announcement (even though they did ride that hype train, with a half assed attempt at curbing expectations with a single vague statement.), but there's more to it than just not getting the announcement they wanted.
I think Matt was looking at this situation from a viewpoint of someone Who’s not invested in this series, so you treat the situation relative to what important in regular life versus what you want in a series that defines part of your life. Plus he backed down once Woolie and Pat clarified their points more.
Blizzard deserves all the flak they're getting from this, but I will not rage over this as much as the fans do. I was fully expecting a Diablo 2 remake or a extra class like the Druid for D3 and maybe a mobile game as a side announcement, but instead they built it up so much as the final announcement for the show. They should've done it like Bethesda did where they showed the mobile game and then the Elder Scrolls sequel title card at the end, but God knows when is that game coming out. Even Gears of War saved themselves from a mobile game backlash by announcing Gears 5 after that Funko Pop mobile game. The Diablo 4 pullout news reeks of crowd control but I do believe it exists, I guess they want to show more than just a title card but it really could've saved them

Pat was wrong about the sequence of the events. The original announcement for the mobile game wasn't met with boos, it was met with *silence*. I was when they responded in the Q&A that there was no PC port that the booing started.
