I was aware of Melanie before she passed away, but did not know very much about her or her music. When I discovered that she was the author of Look What They've Done to My Song Ma and Brand New Key, as well as Lay Down/Candles in the Rain (which was the only song I knew was hers), I proceded to take a deep dive into her music on RU-vid and have become a big fan of hers. This song is one of my favorites, but when I first watched the video of Melanie performing it on the Mike Douglas Show (1977), I thought, "This is a great song. I know I've heard it before. I wonder who wrote it?" And of course it was Melanie who wrote it! I wonder how many others have gotten into Melanie's music since she passed.
