These scenes are examples of inconsistent writing, and sometimes it was because the comedy in a particular episode forced the inconsistency. Like with the weak/strong Ross. Because Schwimmer in real life is actually the best built among the male cast - he has a big upper body just like Matt Le Blanc, but he is also way taller than Le Blanc - 10 cm taller, so he is the tallest and best built among the guys. So it was never realistic that Ross would be weak with that body, and there are episodes where they actually mention Ross is strong (like the one with the tiny t-shirt, 3x19, when Ross is spying on Rachel&Mark and wants to go there, and Chandler tries to stop him, and can't because Ross is so strong).
