more like pause to wait out the laugh track lol, thats also why these vids are always so awkward, everythings so unorganic cause actors need to wait like 2 sec to react
Robyn D Oh, I misunderstood you. Thanks for clearing that up. If you wanna see what that’s like, watch MASH or HIMYM without the laugh track, as those weren’t filmed in front of a live studio audience. It’s not as awkward as this because they don’t pause nearly as much
I honestly think part of why he seems so creepy without the laughing is because he frequently pauses in his talking for what seems like no reason at all. I think where there weren't pauses for audience laughter it was still funny because of his facial expressions

Friends was recorded in front of a live audience so that’s not possible. The laughing is quite literally built into the audio files, hence why it is not perfectly timed and easily removable. People laugh because it’s funny, so sometimes that drags over on time. It’s not a track per se.
TheGreatWal as a sound engineer that sounds terrible. They should have separate mics to balance the audience with the actors (probably from a boom) and this *might* be on separate tracks somewhere. If re-released they could put the dialogue in the center channel which is normal and the laughs and effects/music on left/right/surround. Then it would be easy to cut those out to get the perfect experience.
Thorstein Johannessen the audience was told when to laugh obviously as of they messed up but heard the joke already, how would they find it funny again on the next take?
@Oskar winters I meant the lack of context for the viewer not for a character in the show. Anyone who had actually seen this episode has all the context and wouldn't come to the conclusion that Ross is a psychopath like you see all over the comment section.
Patrick Dunphy it was on its way to it's worse (comedy wise) when Chandler started going steady ("grew up") with Monica.. he lost all of his true funny.. no more sarcasm, just a relationship pushover
it actually makes me laugh without laugh track too, because the jokes and expressions of the actors are funny by themselves. Can't say the same for big bang theory though
laugh track is not a good word for it .cuz thats real people laughing while watching the show , and thats because they know his personality and that specific situation mixed with the fact that they know how ross feels about it makes them and you laugh . it doesn,t have to be a funny word or a curse to make it comic. it,s called situation comedy
jadedjimmy yeah I mean she says done funny things but they’re not a classic pheobe thing, when pheobe makes me laugh it’s usually a chandler type sarcastic comment so that’s it really, I don’t wanna sound really sexist but the boys are superior to the girls in this, not cos they’re boys cos of the writing
Whenever I was a teen watching Friends I sometimes got a serial killer/schizo vibe from Ross. It's so apparent without the laugh track that I'm creeped out and laughing at the same time.
Odd, I've never watched friends much myself as I'm kinda youngish but I've always thought Ross seemed like the much kinder one for some reason, probably just his voice
I found it chilling when he descibed attacking 2 women. To me, it was just dark and creepy. I did laugh out loud when he was being chased at the end, though.

Friends would've worked quite nicely without the laugh track, just some fine tuning with the pausing and presto! A dark humor TV-series 15 years ahead of its time and maybe half a season before the executives killed it.
It’s a completely different level of dark comedy, that actually does work. The creepy “YES THATS RIGHT!” From Ross is hilarious with the awkward silence
Friends was filmed in front of a live studio audience. HE didn't remove anything, he cut OUT the laughs by shortening the video with editing. It messes up the flow, it's not natural at all IMO, just makes it more awkward and a bit funnier in a different way (but not better. lol).
really? not, say... commercials? You could put a laugh track in every tv show if it means I could have the probably days of my life that's added up watching commercials in between the things I actually want to see.

Well the scenes are also broken up like that on purpose so laughter can be heard between lines. Its not exactly how a normal conversation would go down. Theres no natural flow otherwise.

I saw this episode quite recently. This was just another instance of "Ross being unintentionally creepy". So yeah, this is kind of creepy WITH the laugh track. But yeah, characters like Ross need the laugh track, characters like Chandler don't.
The whole original point of the joke is that he comes off as a psycho when he's actually just a bad communicator, it's not like some crazy new layer has been revealed here.
Same thing, because the audience is given signs/cues on when to laugh, when to go "awww", etc. Sometimes they might genuinely laugh. However, usually it's directed.
@@calmwaves111 He's right the audience isn't cued. Sometimes jokes fall flat, so they are re-written on the spot until they get a good reaction from the audience.
I still find it funny with out the laughing track. Friends has good writing. Laughing tracks are just a lazy choice by the producer director. If there is a laughing track than the director doesn't have to do as much work.
Jarod Hogan Friends has a live audience. There has been sequences where audiences' laughter was too noisy/histeric and the movie editing has to cut that out and insert a normal laugh track in, however.
Yeah no trust me most of the laughter on Friends is fake. I just binged all seasons and that one fucking laugh you always hear on How I Met Your Mother is in almost EVERY episode. I believe that it was taped infront of a live audience, but every episode has mostly fake laughter in it.
Without the laugh track, you really start to notice and realize how narcissistic, manipulative, controlling, jealous, sexist, and generally unlikeable Ross is.

Every single sitcom from "Big " Hollywood studios has been able to “debunk” the claim of "laughter machine" that way, _ergo_ every single claim would be nothing but a "sour-grapes" urban-legend/-myth.
What's bad is that even with the laugh track taken out, there's still giggling. This show had a constant stream of laughs and giggles and I didn't even notice it.
I grew up watching Friends, we had no cable for a couple of years, but my mom had every season of Friends on DVD. I have seen this show at least a 100 times.
I like that the removal of the laughs is imperfect, so you hear what sounds like a single person starting to laugh once or twice, then thinking better of it because everyone is staring at them in dead silence.
Yeah. Ross is just horrible at realizing how the things he says can be misinterpreted sometimes. It's funny because you know it's miscommunication so it just turns out absurd.
Xenon first all, you need to know the context of the scene. In this scene the entire joke is that Ross comes across as a psychopath, laugh track or not. Second of all, all of them being psychopaths just isn’t true, they’re just flawed characters. Even if they fit your description of a psychopath that doesn’t mean the show is bad. It means you only characters who are good people

Ha ha, I pointed out how unfunny this show was to a bunch of Friends cultists and they insisted that it was funny. Then when they watched it and I said "Erm, none of you laughed" I was proven right. They wouldn't have it though. Your observation is spot on!
