Isn't it incredible how most Lucille Ball fans today are so young? Under 40,30. People who grew up watching reruns of her shows or movies, people who weren't even born when she passed. She was born in 1911 and in 2021 new people, kids are discovering her work for the first time. What a legend
I just watched Lucy and Ethel their classic version of “Friendship” 😄 and this version popped up afterwards. I have never seen this one. Lucille Ball looked gorgeous in the pink gown. It’s such a cute song and I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you so much. I remember Red Skelton’s show. My family watched it every week and I Love Lucy. Red Skelton always said at the end of his show with, “and may God bless” and he really meant it from the bottom of his heart I read ... he said he wanted people to find the happiness with God he had found. We need it now in 2021. This era doesn’t feel as happy as it was then. 🍃💜🍃✝️🍃🕊🍃🌟
You can see here how amazing Miss Ball was.. before she’d stepped into her iconic role you can see her incredible comedic timing skills and the fantastic use of her body.. she was unbelievable. 🤍
I keep watching this clip and focusing on Tommy Dorsey trying to keep up with the dance steps. I feel as if I were in that number, that would be me. LOL
@@andreas7136 Actually she did some singing in her movies (Dance, Girl, Dance) and Breezing Along with the Breeze, in Long, Long Trailer. (very clearly her voice which was okay, not bad.)
2:40 Pause at this moment. Top row, l-r: Gene Kelly, Lucille Ball, Red Skelton, Virginia O'Brien, Tommy Dorsey. Seated l-r: Rags Ragland, Zero Mostel. Seven performers. Five of them (Kelly, Ball, Skelton, Dorsey, and Mostel) among the greatest entertainment legends of the 20th Century. The other two (O'Brien and Ragland) are lesser only compared to the other five. Most of those five weren't yet legends when they made this. Just an astonishing array of talent for this one classic song.
Much thanks for the line up. Getting older and I can’t always remember the names like I used to do. Virginia’s was driving me crazy. Also, I can’t remember seeing such a young version of Red! It took was shocking when i finally recognized him! I know a lady who moved here (NC) from California. I was at here house and she had a small framed painting of a clown AND it was signed Red Skelton. I asked where she got it, because I wanted one. Turns out that it was an original painting by Red. It was a gift. He was their neighbor and their families were close friends. Funny coincidence is my friend’s hair is redder than his and more like Lucille’s color. Sorry, I can babble!
Movie buffs watching "Du Barry Was a Lady" and paying attention will see young Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver) and Ava Gardner in brief uncredited roles. And of course Lana Turner has a cameo as herself. Ah MGM! More stars that there are in heaven.
I can’t stand the movie DuBarry. So I never got to the end to see this scene. Bad, Bad on me!! Just when I think I have appreciated Lucille Ball, there is a magnificent showing of her talent. The Greatest! 🥰
She never thought she could sing nor dance. She could definitely sing and dance! Maureen O'Hara complimented Lucy's dancing talents when working with her. Lucy's good friend, Ann Sothern, turned down this role, originated by Ethel Merman. Lucy took it and Sid Guilerof dyed her hair red for it, her first MGM feature. Funny how life works!
The movie Lucy and Maureen O'Hara starred in together "Dance, Girl, Dance" really wonderful movie and Lucy did all her own singing and dancing in it. In fact, Lucy always said that Maureen O'Hara was perfect. While I like O'Hara in this movie, Lucille Ball was The Star - could not take my eyes off her - she was great as "Bubbles".

Dance, Girl, Dance (also she was a dancer in early Hollywood) Loved watching her do the Charleston with her daughter and Ginger Rogers in Here's Lucy. Actually I felt that Lucy was the best of the 3 - something about her movements and pizazz. Again when she was clowning around and dancing with Wayne Newton, Lucie Arnaz, while her son Desi Jr played the drums - again I watched her movements the most - she had something about her that was riveting.
You can find this as the ending of the 1944 film “Du Barry Was A Lady”. The only actual song in the film where Lucy’s real singing voice is heard instead of dubbed by someone else, too.
Okay so I grew up with this song on the Disney Sing Along vhs of Friend Like Me sung by Mickey, Donald, and Goofy so when I rented this film from the library last year I was surprised to find out it was from this film.
I prefer Judy Garland's version but this version is so good because of Red. My eyes are focused only on him. He was a great actor, singer and dancer with the comedy to add. He's the best dancer in this entire number
Fun number showcasing Lucy before her superstar days. She had a freshness here and it sounds like they used her real voice. I only saw three cuts during the song - they must have rehearsed it well. The asymmetrical shoulder accent on her dress is very stylish.
We're doing Anything Goes for our musical this year (which includes this song) and I was looking up Red Skelton and I saw a Gif of him singing this and I started screaming
I noticed how much taller Lucy is when Gene comes on the stage - and he's wearing lifts. Does anyone know how tall Gene Kelly was? Red Skelton must have been tall!
Red was 6'2", Lucy was 5'7" (without heels), Gene's height was reported to be anywhere from 5'7" to 5'9", Virginia O'Brien was 5'8". The ladies' pompadours added to their stature.
Actually Red Skelton was one of the first people to recognize Lucy's comedic talent. He was the one that told her MGM did her a favor by letting her go because Louis B Mayer never understood clowns. He also was her mentor and helped teach her many of the things comedy requires as comedy was still, at that time, a male dominated art.
@@LJ-ht4zs Yes, that's 100% true. Supposedly, Keaton told her 'always know your props.' Meaning know them inside and out before you work with them. I think she could have had no better teacher then him for props. I mean, this is a guy who used to let entire sides of houses fall on him in his movies and his body would fit through the door and he would come out unscathed. You really need to know your props for a dangerous stunt like that.
This clip shows how short Gene Kelly was. I always thought he was taller. They don't make movies like this anymore. Good old fashioned fun. Too much killing/violence in today's movies. Need more feel good movies.
Tommy Vermiglio Wrong. It was written for the show Du Barry Was a Lady with Ethel Merman and Burt Lahr. It was interpolated in the revival of Anything Goes.
@@RoverBoy1899 So very sorry you feel this way. Please do a Google search and read the many critics who panned her performance. In any case using such language as shame on you is a bit much don’t you agree, especially when I am quoting a critic who said that she maimed the film.
@@javitchassociates1377 I don't need to listen to critics or Google anything. I own the movie and have seen it many times. It's a great movie with fantastic songs. Is Lucille Ball the greatest singer? No. But she still does a great job performing the songs without the help if autotune. As for her acting, she is a joy to watch, and she gives, in my opinion, a far superior and more grounded portrayal than Rosalind Russell.
