Stoltz has like 30 seconds of screen time in one episode and still became one of my favorite characters in this series and one of my favorite brothers in anime. Just the way that backstory was executed really elevated him for me.
Also, it's crazy how you guys keep saying the right things and getting everything about the story. You girls are some of the most Intelligent and emotionally aware people on YT ❤
I realised this while watching their AOT reactions and ATLA reactions.... like for AOT they were the only reactors who didn't hate Reiner and his group cus they knew that there was a good reason behind their actions.... and for ATLA they were the only ones who cried when Azula cried in the end... cus they knew that she's literally a kid who has been brainwashed by her father
i wonder why every reactors first thought when seeing that scene is "stark is gonna pull it?" i mean, when i was watching this episode for the first time that thought never even crossed my mind... i mean Stark is aloof, a strong loveable goofball, he doesn't have any ideas of grandeur or heroism, he doesn't have any big plans about going around killing big baddies to save the world, every single good deed he does it's because he feels like helping out and he is having fun while doing it, not because he wants to be memorable or never forgotten... plus he clearly doesn't see himself as anything close to a hero... after all, all he wants to do is have a crazy fun journey and then go back to his master and share stories with him.
One of the reasons I love you girls reactions and are my favorite would be that you have awareness of almost everything going on nearly every time something is happening, meaning you are invested and paying attention. But you also appreciate good dialogue, world building and character development. Too many channels just care about the big moments or fights and not the journey along the way. I always look forward to your reactions because I am excited to see how you two will fall in love with a show for its little things, not just the big things. Frieren is a show for people who appreciate the little things and get rewarded with some big ones now and then too.
I'd say your idea is in line with most peoples thinking about Fern. She lost her parents at a very young age and was subsequently fostered by a rather old (corrupt) priest and then trained and taken in by a thousand year old female elf. Her experience with boys is pretty much nothing, and she probably didnt have any real teachings about hormones/sex/puberty/love from Heiter or Frieren. Stark was also orphaned at a fairly young age and then raised by a old warrior dwarf, who I doubt had such talks with -him-. So you have two people that have essentially been raised to fight monsters/demons since they were small children with little to no contact with the opposite sex, especially someone their own age. IF there are feelings, I highly doubt either one even realizes it at this point let alone would be able to act accordingly if they DID realize it. As for Frieren and Himmel. 1) she's an elf, so her sense of time heavily influences how she learns, feels, processes information and experiences. Plus her whole village was slain by demons and then she was taken in by a powerful mage that urged and taught her to subdue her magical power (and probably emotions, by extension). Then she died and was essentially alone for how long before Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen came along? Years? Decades? Centuries? It wasnt even until Himmel passed that she even began to realize that people she knew for such a relatively short time (to her) could impact her so greatly; that other people, humans specifically, dont have the same advantage of time that she does and live and act accordingly. At the time of their "mere 10 year" adventure I doubt she could have said she loved any of her party members in any particular way or at all. Sure she enjoyed their company, they had fun, they learned to trust each other, and they had a common goal. Shes learning a lot about the people she knew back then with the experiences and knowledge shes gaining now. Just like Stark learned in this episode that maybe his memories and views of past events and people may have had a context he didnt even realize at the time, Frieren is looking at her past adventure through an ever clearer new lense through the whole series. I think she's slowly learning that she DID love Himmel, and still does. As a hero, as a person, as a friend, and maybe even romantically. That maybe Himmel cared about her and maybe even loved her ,too. And Starks brother, oh man. We all have a lot to say about him and its pretty much 100% positive from everyone. I think the most important parts are he didnt have an inflated ego and that he loved his little brother more than his own life and he saw and believed in his potential to become a greater warrior than himself, even when no one else did. Now everywhere he goes when he meets a great/old warrior they also see his potential, just like his brother did, and feel compelled to pass on their knowledge to him. I really hope we later find out that he survived the demon attack and Stark gets to show he finally realized how much his big brother loved him and Stoltz gets to see what a great warrior and hero his little brother has become.
You have a: * fake hero * cowardly warrior * corrupt priest * disrespectful mage But together they defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. ALSO, note that all the members of the hero's party, plus the new members are ALL orphans. Frieren, Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, Fern, and Stark are all orphans....
Updated list of German words in Frieren: *Aura* = aura *Auserlese* = selection, to carefully select something of the highest quality (in this case the largest amount of mana) *Äußerst* = most likely referring to the town's remote position (außen = at the outside) but "äußerst" is the wrong adjective to use if that's the case. "Äußerst" is generally used as a superlative as in "extremely, most, etc." *Bluterei* = may refer to the word "bluten" (bleeding). *Draht* = wire *Eisen* = iron *Ende* = the end *Eng* Road = tight, narrow *Erfassen* = to capture, to gather, to register, to comprehend (it's the name of Linie's imitation spell) *Ewig* the sage = eternal, forever *Fern* = far away, distant *Flamme* = flame *Frieren* = to freeze, to feel cold *Heiter* = cheerful, merry *Himmel* = heaven (can refer to the sky and heaven in a religious sense) *Kraft* = strength, power *Linie* = line *Lügner* = liar *Schwer* Mountains = heavy *Stark* = strong *Stoltz* = pride, proud - correct spelling would be *Stolz* *Qual* = agony, torture
22:15 That's precisely the point; it is said that the man who pulls the sword from the stone will save the world, will be a hero. Himmel wasn't chosen to be a hero HE CHOSE to be a hero which is a far more important teaching for everyone. I love your reactions, thank you for sharing with us. 😊
I really liked your analysis of how both Himel and Stark's brother didn't care much about how people saw them, as comething extra, in the minute 14:32 , after their father talked about how his brother is the strongest for having a clean coat, it shows how he didn't care about getting mud on it when he bent down to help Stark practice
I felt your urge to jump into the TV and beat up Stark’s dad. This episode is so good at breaking your heart while giving you great laughs about how Stark is just a teen.
It couldn't be more perfect, from beginning to end this episode just keeps on giving, if the Himmel ring flashback was in this one too, i would literally die in the spot.
I agree with you girls. This anime is one of the best! It’s not just battles it’s wonderful characters and stories. I think I’ve cried in every episode. Such a beautiful cast of characters who are funny, heroic and caring. Frieren like you said was alone for so long that she didn’t appreciate or realize she loved Himmel until now after he is gone. It teaches all of us a valuable lesson to appreciate the people you love now and live in the present because one day they will be gone. Milena saying this episode healed something in me was so heartfelt and touching to me. I think this anime is healing something in all of us. Friday Frieren is the best part of my week! Thanks girls!
Your description about what you want to see from Fern and Stark's relationship makes me feel like y'all would absolutely love Kaguya-sama love is war lol
