Just want to point out that Qual is a *scary* dude. He finds out that his ultimate offensive spell has been countered in the 80 years he was sealed, sees the defensive spell that was built specifically to beat Zoltraak, looks at it for *maybe* 20 seconds, and in that time manages to copy it, analyze it, and determine the most efficient way to defeat it.

@ArtificialXD 3 месяца назад
Not only that, but Qual only died so "easily" because he was still missing important information. It's not directly stated, but it's implied that he didn't know Frieren could fly and that he wasn't expecting Frieren's Zoltraak to kill him so easily. (Both get retroactively supported later in the show too, so it's not just a headcannon.) After shooting at Fern, Qual actively looks side-to-side for Frieren because he lost sight of her. He looked up too late because he didn't even know that was an option - Frieren didn't fly 80 years ago. Qual also didn't cast the new defensive spell, even though he just demonstrated that he could As the creator of Zoltraak, Qual possibly thought he understood it enough that the new defensive spell was unnecessary for him. Unlike the defensive spell however, Qual didn't have a chance to analyze their Zoltraak - he didn't consider that it might've gotten changed or improved over 80 years (versus only imitated).

You didn't notice it, but Fern was finally reading that tome on magical history Frieren bought her, while sitting on the back of that cart at the end.

Eisen said he likes sour grapes, in the previous episode Fern revealed that Frieren acquired a spell to make grapes sour. I find that most reviewers/reactors miss that detail if they didn't watch eps 1 to 4 in one go.

There is a German RU-vidr, Storieswithstyle, who has a lovely video giving an analysis of the names(character, location, and spell) as they appear in the anime up to episode 16. It is very much worth watching, if you have gotten to episode 16 already. (The names in Frieren are almost all German words)

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Sousou no Frieren! I hope you really enjoy this anime series! A lot of modern Japanese fantasy is tailored after the Lord of the Rings. Frieren is very Tokeinesque, so Elves are nearly immortal, Dwarves live a few hundred years and humans 70-90 years. Just a few things if no one else has mentioned it; this anime is really about paying attention to little details, as small things make emotional impacts later in series. For instance, the reason why Frieren buys a hair clip in Episode 3 that had a butterfly design was because in Episode 2 the first time Fern showed Heiter her magic, she made an illusion of glowing butterflies. You DO learn why Frieren has a habit of collecting spells, and it all starts with her master, who is revealed in Episode 4 and you learn way more about her in the penultimate mid-season episode 10. There is speculation that since Priests are the only ones who can effectively use holy magic (dispelling and resisting curses, casting holy affinity offensive magic, blessings and healing) that they are also granted longer lives than normal. Some people even say that Heiter passed away when he was over 100. Every name in Frieren is a German word and they have meaning. There is a school of thought that this whole story is Frieren's reminiscence, since people are named for concepts that encapsulates a memory/impression, rather than normal German names. Frieren - Freezing - it's speculated that Frieren's emotional state was frozen by tragedy revealed in Episode 10, and that her master was instrumental in thawing her, culminating in meeting with her friends. Another interpretation is that Frieren's relational state was frozen, an her time with Fern will continue the change in her that her time with Himmel did. Himmel - Sky or Heaven - pay attention to the times they show the Sky, as it almost always refers to Himmel or the memory of him Heiter - Jolly - Heiter is shown in future flashbacks as deflecting difficult emotional stress with humour or self-deprecation. Eisen - Iron - a great name for one of the strongest warriors in history Fern - Remote or distant Stark - Strong Flamme - Flame - The founder of Human Magic, Frieren's human Master. Potentially named for the Promethean legend, the giant who taught the gift of fire to humans (technology & civilization) in Greek mythology, but also for setting Frieren on the path to thawing her heart. Qual - Torment Aura - Aura Lügner - Liar Linie - Line, as in production, watch the way she summons things Draht - Wire Graf Garnat - Count Garnet - the stone that is part of the family amulet is a red garnet. Kraft - Power, Strength Sein - Being or Existence Kanne - Container or pot Lawine - Avalanche Wirbel - Whirl or Vortex Übel - Evil or Villain Denken - Thinking Land - Country Richter - a reference to the founder of hte Richter Scale, the measure of earthquake intensity Laufen - Runner Ehre - Honor or Glory Scharf - Sharp Sense - Scythe Genau - Exactly or Precisely Falsch - Wrong or Mistaken Lernen - Learn Edel - Noble Blei - Lead the metal Dünste - Steamy or hazy Ton - Sound or Tone Länge - Length of time or duration Methode - Method Serie - Series, as in items in a group (a book series, for example) - obvious, given her encyclopedic memory and her offer of "privilege." Notice that the way time is marked in the anime is based on Himmel's death (such as "20 years after the Death of Himmel the Hero.") It's not certain if this is universal or how Frieren marks her time. Frieren recently toppled FullMetal Alchemist from the top spot on MyAnimeList (MAL), where it had sat for more than a decade. Both are Shonen manga that have women mangakas, and both start with loss. Both are praised for excellent characterization, complex and nuanced issues, delicate handling of plot, emotional intensity and touching sentimentalism. Lastly, the series is named "Sousou no Frieren." While this has often been translated as "Frieren The Slayer" that is INCORRECT. "Sousou no" is the act of "sending off" as in a funeral. So while the manga title may be translated as "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead" since that's more literary, the more precise translation is "Frieren the Undertaker." This has more than one meaning, but the two most common interpretations is that we learn that Elves in Frieren are essentially immortal, so Frieren will eventually "send off" all her non-elven friends. The second meaning is to "see someone off" is also a euphemism for killing and is Frieren is first identified by a demon as the titular character in Episode 8.

Frieren went to see Hiesen 20 years after the death of Himmel. With it currently in show being 27 years, and Fern now being 16, she would have been 8 or 9 when she first met Frieren, Not exact since we do not know the months, just years. No indications until this episode, so no real way to know until now. You mentioned 18 last episode, but to point it out then, would have been a spoiler to this episode.

Qual needed to be sealed because it was impossible to beat him at the time. Frieren couldn't visualize a way of beating him and as a mage what you can't visualize you can't manifest. Magic in that world is as much about visualization as it is about technique or skill.

We do know Himmel was clearly "interested" in Frieren: in the flashback, when the kid lifted her skirt (and you called Himmel cute for being protective), he specifically scolded the boy for seeing what he himself wanted to see first. That our openly pervy hero for ya😅

I believe it was because at the time, magic wasn't as strong as it was currently. Plus Frieren and the other mages also worked together on creating new defensive magic to the point that Zoltraak stopped being considered killing magic.

I am so glad you're enjoying Frieren! It came out of nowhere at the end of 2023 for me and it's one of my top 3 of the year. As for translations, not much stuff to mention. The city of Warm is just the same in german and english, warm. Qual means agony/torment. The spells seem to be the only names that don't have german origin and I can't quite figure out what they're based on, Zoltraak isn't close to anything that would be familiar to me. Btw, your hair, makeup and the whole look is stunning!

Zoltreck is likely Enrgish for 'Soul Track'. A lot of the newer magics have Engrish names, contrasting the older spells having German names. (Engrish being the term for Japanese localized English)

@Tre-lew

Is that stated in the anime or is that manga spoiler?
@leonardomarquesbellini
@leonardomarquesbellini 6 месяцев назад
@Tre-lew just a timeline thing. Zoltraak was incorporated into humanity's magic a few years after Qual was sealed, and that rough timeframe also lines up with the amount of time between the sealing and them killing the demon king. I don't think we know for sure Frieren already had Zoltraak by then, but considering she was one of the key people in figuring out that spell it's possible she had at least a preliminary version of it.
@ObiwanNekody
@ObiwanNekody 6 месяцев назад
@@leonardomarquesbellini it is indeed a timeline thing, but we also know she knew it before facing the DK because of a flashback you will see later. Because it is a timeline thing I don't think either statement is a spoiler.
@ObiwanNekody

@@Tre-lew timeline thing. One thing that makes Frieren(the anime) great is how it avoids telling you when it can show you very briefly in the background or as part of a disconnected lore dump.
