I love that Serie was all, "Hey, Frieren. Stick around for a bit because I want to reminisce about Flamme's childhood and gush about her many achievements as an adult, as I smile remembering her walking hand in hand with me as a little girl. What do you mean why? Because you love Flamme, and I'm doing this for you. Not for me. Now, shoo. Go away while I take a millennium to ponder how to grant Flamme's dying wish that I said I refuse to fulfill, because I need to find a way to take over humanity's magic like Flamme wants without compromising my values and making sure I only teach the most talented mages."
i get teary eyed at the start of "Do you know what her favorite spell was?" as serie stops and looks at where Flamme used to be and she holds her hand as they used to walk through the woods. a gesture that held little meaning for serie at the time but wasnt something she disliked either. now walking through the woods where they walked together, she cant ever get that chance again. idk exactly how exactly how the elves view death of another but it wasnt entirely indifferent as we've seen. flamme was a part of serie even if she appears cold to the idea of flamme in general. and ive noticed that serie wanted to take a walk with frieren after she told serie that flamme knew how'd she react to her last request. maybe that made her feel especially lonely. also, when theyre on the cliff, serie's back is turned from the sun while frieren is happily facing it. lovely little touch.
Serie was adamant she was not going to comply with Flamme's request, and yet she started the Continental Magic Association. Furthermore Flamme was such a student Serie just took on a whim, Serie was forced to mention it twice. Then she desperately called after Frieren to walk with her, where she talked fondly about her memories of Flamme. Yes, we were shown she was a mom to Flamme, which makes her Frieren's grandmother.
The moment when Serie remembers Flamme, as a child, holding her hand smiling is truly heartbreaking. She is a mother trying to deal with the death of her daughter.
Elves really take long to learn new habits or change, considering Frieren said even after 80+ years it's still not "enough time to learn how to reflexively defend against it." It's another example of how time was never on their side Himmel & Frieren.
This Frieren/Serie flashback is god tier. I'm not sure that there is a better one anywhere. The way that youngster Flamme joins Serie for the walk showing that Serie carries the memories of her with her intimately, the way the human Flamme runs in front of the slowly walking elves, the topics discussed, the way they are facing opposite directions at the end to show their different viewpoints...
It is the best scene (or two scenes technically) in the show, in terms of writing quality. Not the most exciting or satisfying, maybe, but, IMO, easily the most well-written and encapsulating of the themes of the show itself. It's too bad people get annoyed with it because it interrupts the fight so hard.
There’s a cute parallel between Serie and Flamme’s relationship with Frieren’s and Fern’s. Obviously, they’re a pair of an elf teacher with a talented human student but they’re also adoptive parents to their disciples. You can see the similarity most clearly when Serie talks about a time when Flamme was “much shorter” than her. Frieren uses this exact same phrase when talking about Fern in the episode where Fern had a cold.
Denken used Dasdorg which seems to be a lighter shade of fire compared to Frieren's Vollzenbel. Both are super cool. Methode seems like she's an all rounder and very knowledgeable. I hope we see Lawine's family more. Ty for reacting!
Yeah most modern mages specializes in one type of magic, Methode is the only modern mage we've seen that took the Jack of all Trades approach. She even knows basic priest spells!
There is so much copium in Serie constantly lying to herself that she doesn't care about the humans she has met, in order to avoid feeling sad. It may as well be how she griefs.
I really liked how they explained how humans and elves see magic! Elves lack the motivation to develop convenient spells unlike us humans who want to live an easy happy life in our short life span.
Very scary boss to fight! The magic that both real and replica Frierens shoot out are so amazing! 😮 I really like the flashback of the Hero’s party killing the monster as a team. 😊 Heiter was still there even though he was hungover 😂
I wish you'd have gotten a Patreon started when you started Frieren. Would definitely have been in. I'd still consider it for other anime reactions because you have a great personality and commentary!
It's highly unlikely that Sense uses this same test each time, or even once before, otherwise the mages would have been much better prepared for it, as the conditions of the test would have become common knowledge by now.
Are you saying that you don't believe that an attack that you didn't see actually hit and do damage ended the fight? In an anime? Where any fully obscuring attack is probably less effective than a smoke bomb?
Now that the new anime season has started up it makes me miss Frieren. So far there's nothing in this new anime season I like as much as it. It's kind of a mediocre season for me. So what are your plans once you finish Frieren?
