Frightening Encounter in Old West MONTANA | Teddy Roosevelt Story 1892

In 1892, a book was published titled The Wilderness Hunter, written by future president and avid sportsman Theodore Roosevelt. It told of his life and sporting adventures in the American West some eighteen years before becoming president. In the book, one story stands out among the others and it’s one that you might not expect to find in a book written by the future president.
The story was told to Roosevelt by a man named Bauman, who was referred to in the text as a “grizzled, weather-beaten old mountain hunter.” There are no other details about Bauman except that he was of German heritage and had lived all his life on the frontier. The old mountain man tells the future president that he and an unnamed partner had planned to trap beaver in a remote section of the western Montana wilderness near the Wisdom River (now the Big Hole). Other hunters avoided the area after a trapper’s mutilated body was discovered sometime earlier by a group of miners passing by his camp.
Still, the two men were not to be deterred by the stories told of the area and ventured deep into the remote Montana backcountry. There they made a quick lean-to shelter, and with few hours of daylight left, made their way up the river to scout. They returned at dusk to discover their cover destroyed and their belongings scattered around the campsite. Thinking it was a bear, they cleaned up, and Bauman set about making supper. His partner left to investigate some tracks, and what he found could not have been made by a bear, but something that walked upright on two legs like a man; but no man could have left those prints.
Keep Hiking!!

This is a terrifying story. I love the fact that it was so long ago and President Roosevelt saw fit to include it in his book. The two men in the story were mountain men, expert hunters and trappers. So many similarities in what they told about and the experiences these days. interesting. Thank you, Chris. And yes please to multiple stories a week!

The Colonel himself had an odd experience in Washington state while on an excursion there. He heard a scream-growl that he couldn't identify and which, apparently, freaked out his Indian guide who insisted that Roosevelt and himself needed to be 'anywhere but where they were'.

First of all, my hats off to you for camping out in the woods all alone. Hard pass for me. I’d never leave the camper. Second, if i’m ever found in that situation, by no means would I EVER separate myself from my partner and wander off into the woods alone after encountering something that obviously doesn’t want me there. Good story. Much appreciated.

I've been camping and fishing on Wise River many times. As a MT native, hands down my favorite part of the entire state. Almost feels like its own national park. The Pioneer Mountains on both sides of the valley are magnificent, lots of old abandoned mining history at Coolidge, the Crystal Park (dig for your own gem stones), and nearby Bannack. Also a great nearby ski-hill, and the plateau at the top of the pass genuinely resembles some parts of Yellowstone (minus the geysers). The area is a fishing and hiking mecca. Highly recommend visiting if you're near the area. Hope you're well Chris, it was indeed a very frightening story!

Checking YT first thing on Sundays for your latest story, Chris. Love them all! I'm sure there are endless untold stories like this, especially from the past. I'm very curious what stories the Native American community have. When my son was driving across country with a childhood friend after his time in the Montana Conservation Corps, they went to the Grand Canyon and spent a few days with the Native Americas that lived there. They told my son and friend that there are space ships/sauces that are hiding in the canyons. They also said they had told the police several times, but they ignored them. I've heard that the Sasquatch are aliens from another galaxy. Things that make you go hmmm!😆👽

Chris we look forward to your stories and have been watching the older stuff while we wait for Sunday's post. So definitely welcome another story per week. Sad that they did not leave as soon as there was an issue, that they didn't listen to their gut and that they split up; otherwise Jessup may not have been killed. Dave Paulides always mentions the point of separation and Steve Isadahl to listen when something does not feel right. And you always scare the poo out of me with the sound effects!!! Good job!! Stay safe out there!!
