Frisco 1630 pulls a 135 car Coal Train!

On May 29,2016, Frisco 2-10-0 "Decapod" 1630 was used to remove a coal train from the Illinois Railroad Museum's main line. The coal train was stored at the museum over the winter but with the museum beginning to run trains again the cars needed to be moved. Two more coal trains were stored on the main line and were removed earlier in the spring. The museum used several of their diesels for power on the earlier movements but Frisco 1630 was selected to pull the final cut out of the museum. We first see 1630 arriving at Johnson Siding to pick up the cut. Then we see the locomotive pulling hard as it heads west. We see the train one last time at East Union where the 1630 would cut off and a diesel would arrange the cars to be handed over to the Union Pacific.

The hoppers are empty, the train is 2900 tons according to another video, but still an impressive haul considering this is around the same load they used to test 1218 - a 2-6-6-4 heavy articulated, and she seemed to be working pretty hard on her test runs. A testament to the raw pulling power of the 2-10-0 type, explaining why they were so popular on so many railroads for so long despite being technically made "obsolete" decades before diesels even entered the picture. PRR continued to use their I1sa's doing much the same work in the Appalachian mountains as late as 1958, and former Great Western number 90 spent her service years hauling beet trains of similar tonnage and length in the Colorado foothills, she was running up until Strasburg bought her in '67 if memory serves.

135 empty bethgons comes to a little under 4100 tons by my estimate. Loaded would be way more.

Standard loaded coal hoppers tip the scales at over a hundred tons a piece. Don't know where anyone got those low numbers for loaded. And yes these are obviously empty.

Doing exactly what the 2-10-0 Decapod type was originally intended for. To haul slow moving very heavy trains like this.

@Andy Look, they're ancient relics that rely on burning coal or oil. That pumps Co2 into the atmosphere and causes respiratory issues for those exposed to it long enough without face masks. I love steam engines to death, but I'm not gonna pretend that just because they're works of art doesn't mean they're immune from affecting the environment, nor make it so electric trains aren't the way of the future.

This wasn’t much for 1630 to handle. It’s meant for freight drags, however. Todays cars do weigh more than freight cars back when this locomotive was in revenue service so still a good workout. It’s hard for a lot of railroads to justify working a locomotive hard like they were when they were new with spare parts lying around but it’s still great to see an old iron horse stretch their legs

Every ones is in awe,I am in awe tooI love to see steam pulling a heavy load. But the fact of the matter is, back when they built these fine locomotives they didn't build them to be lazy they built them to work hard and pull heavy loads. They depended on them for service and they delivered..More more love this.I want to see 1630 start off with that load.

My God, men, they didn't build these engines to be toys; they were meant to work. Yes, it's cool, but it's hardly astonishing. She's only doing exactly what she was built to do -- pull heavy freight at low speed. Nearly all her weight is on her drivers. I don't know the average tonnage of freight trains circa 1917, but with her tractive effort this is not a miracle. It's just a great illustration of the power of steam. Take a Doble steam car. Direct drive, it'll go 0-60 in about 15 seconds and it's nothing but torque. You don't even have a transmission. A Ford Model T can't top 40 mph and it takes about 40 seconds to do that! Alas, I rant in vain. Tomorrow I shall haul firewood in my Nissan Frontier with heated seats and digital music.
