I remember that one GBA Frogger RPG being really good, sort of the same situation as Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak where there was literally no apparent reason for it to be as good as it was.
The fact that the same developers worked on Zapper is actually pretty gratifying to me because even though it was really good I always had that thought in the back of my mind, "This is a frogger 2 clone." Well yes, but actually no. Regardless I was glad to see the frogger formula continue on through whatever the future frogger games do because I hated these games since I saw the box art.
Andrea I love making those OCs. There’s just something so charming about them these days. Maybe some find it hilariously cringy while I just find it charming
Oh my gosh I used to play his game with my big brother all the time when we were kids! My dad would set up our computer and pop in the disc for this game and we'd replay all the levels for hours! I'm so happy to see you go over this game. It brings back so many memories!
Frogger 2 *revenge of swampy.* Also the thing I like about nitro rad is that he covers kinda obscure games and it's been interesting learning more about them.
I'm actually glad that there's no boss fights; when was the last time a platformer tried NOT having any boss fights? Truly a trope that NEEDS to be delved away from sometimes.
I discovered your channel like a week ago. Been watching and following you ever since. Absolutely in love with your content. It's nostalgic in a way, and just fun. Keep up the good work my dude.
I started watching him since that Blinx review. Funny thing is, my nostalgia kicked in and searched Blinx on RU-vid, and his review was shown to be uploaded like a week ago.
Do the Tak trilogy! Tak and the Power of Juju, Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak and the Great Juju Challenge! These three games are gems that need attention! Your the guy to do them justice! Please and thank you!
@@cheyguy1211 That's likely, but he did a Mario marathon a while back so he might cover other well known 3D platformers at some point. Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, he'll likely cover these when he feels the time is right (like he did the 3D Mario marathon around the time of Odyssey's release).
I remember playing Frogger 2 on Windows with my dad, we found cheat codes and one of them made it so you could grab and eat *anything* with your toungue, it was really fun.
So glad you mentioned the Dreamcast version and how much smoother it runs, I was getting worried that it may have ended up being forgotten when you were talking about how much the performance issues were slowing down the gameplay.
I've noticed that a lot of Dreamcast versions of PS1 games run better. When I saw Soul Reaver on the Dreamcast the first time I was shocked. I didn't have the words for it, but I was seeing anti-aliasing versus no anti-aliasing in a game for the first time in my life. I don't know why the Dreamcast wasn't more popular, a lot of the releases for it were much more stable than PlayStation's.
@@wareforcoin5780 I feel it was due to timing. By the time the Dreamcast came out the Playstation and N64 had been out for awhile and had grown their own playerbases that might not have wanted to jump to a new console yet.
except tron disnt have you eat dots and lightcycles left a permanent wall while in snake your "trail" follows you and represents the dots you ate, also snake and frogger have more in common with each other fiven their origins so it was more likely that the devs had snake in mind
Mel Blanc's screams are available on the WB SFX library. Blanc's stock screams and vocal effects are used less (because the recordings are old and low-quality) but a lot of studios still own the library because it has a lot of great general cartoon sounds and other SFX. Nintendo used sounds from the library in the finished version of Mario 64, and modified versions of the samples still turn up in Nintendo games occasionally, even today.
*"Back In The 80's Frogger Was A Smash Hit In Arcades."* You can say that again, but the thing is...I never really played the arcade games...I did however play them in the game you're talking about right now! 😎😄😁👍
I played this game on PC, so I don't remember if the framerate issues were a thing for me back then. God, this video takes me back. I was able to recognize a lot of the levels shown in the gameplay footage (especially the ant-hill level, I remember that being one of my favorites).
Nothing like a NitroRad video to make you realize that those foggy memories of a game you loved as a kid are in fact real and not made up in your head. Holy shit I LOVED this game.
First off I've seen you everywhere as of late. Second everyone always asks for the sauce of your pfp. Third, James has his forte in those kinds of games. Gives me interesting games to look out for.
@@phantomninja6079 Its not just that, the structure of the game is the same as a collection, but instead of collecting an object you get points. You're on a small open level with a bunch of things to do, on a mario game you would do something (like getting to the top of the mountain or bringing the penguin down) and be rewarded with a star, on thug2 each goal gives you a certain amount of points to unlock the next level, you don't need to complete all of them, just enough to go to the next level (just like you don't need all stars in mario). And you do them while you explore the map, they're all on a list on the menu, but you need to find where it is and do it by yourself. I think thug 2 is the one that fits best because in other tony hawk games they give you a timer to do as much as you can in one run, on thug 2 you have unlimited time and you will spend most of it exploring. Thug 1 is also different but it mission based, you need to talk to an npc to activate the mission first, then do it, if a mission is to grind on 5 cars you can't just go there and do it, you need to talk to him and be on the "mission mode", so exploring the map is not as interesting because you are just looking for npcs to tell you what to do, you have no reason to just wonder around. I didn't play american wasteland so I don't know if it's like thug2 too
one of my first games on PC, good times. Another Blitz Games game Bad Boys Miami Takedown actually had a shout-out to Frogger when you get into the arcade in one level.
James, ever sinds i saw your rayman video i must admit that i have been enjoying every single episode you made, from the wide range of indie games to the old classics which brought back memories. Thank you for making these vidoes and thank you for being the way you are. I really enjoy your videos and keep going. You got my support . All the way from holland :)
Nostalgia is pretty strong. I actually loved Frogger the great quest when I was a kid. It was the first game I ever beat. Me and my mom would sit there for hours trying to get through it. I remember it being a lot of fun
*"Wow, This One Actually Has A Title Screen."* And it has a rocking tune to go with it too...I swear I love the title screen for Frogger 2...it's jamming! 👌😎👍
You're one of the best game channels simply because you look at all these old earlier 3D era games even if they're less known, it's from that time period that's really nostalgic for me and there's so many I never knew of as a kid.
*"The Tongue Move Works Exactly The Same Way."* Don't forget the unlockable Feeding Frenzy when you beat the entire game...I always had a blast with that lol! 😂😂😂
The PC port of this game was the very first retail game i legitimately wanted to buy back when Demos were given out with PC magazines. Frogger 2 remains hands down my most favorite Retro PC game of all time. ...also i had a huge crush on Lilly Frog back when i was small.
I used to love this game as a kid. Looking back at it I can tell how fun it is. A true classic that offers a unique experience compared to modern games. I hope to replay one day.
This... actually looks really cool! The Dreamcast version seems to be pretty reasonably priced, too! I think this one will be making its way into my collection
Thank you so much for this review! I had no idea the sequel was far better than the first game. I may look into it some day, just as I've already had bought Zapper for the PS2. It's because of this channel that I've been introduced to so many overlooked platformers and for that I am grateful to have subscribed to this channel!
You know what's...rad? I haven't really played platformers since the PS2/Xbox/GC era but I really like platformer / adventure game videos you do. it's like looking back at my childhood, even if it's titles from the present era or something.
Nice to see that you're actually rescuing the baby frogs this time, rather than just flat out exploding them to death like you did in the first game...
Man, this video got recommended to me out of the blue and I was SO excited to see that someone talked about it. I distinctly remember watching my brother play this while my mom made orange flavored cinnamon rolls and I always think of this game any time I have them. Anyways, I've now binged half of his stuff because there are soooo many games that he's covered that I thought that no one else had heard of before or just didn't give a shit. 10 out of 10, do recommend.
I remember me and my sister would play this like crazy. Playing the Tron like mode was our favorite and in race we'd tried to pin each other's frog and time it so that if you wait for a trap or car to come by with enough time to get pass it but have the other person wait, but you can get pinned in the middle of the animation and the other person can get safe and put you in danger so this plan can and will get countered or reversed.
One thing I think that could of been done is that the eight playable characters could have had gameplay differences; it felt like we only played as Frogger with different costumes. I even have ideas for the eight characters special abilities. Frogger: Able to take two hits from most things (some things still kill in one hit) Lillie Frog: Fast movement speed Tad: Able to glide extra long Treeby: Triple jump Wart: Able to eat any insect enemy Tank: Able to stun animal and robot enemies, making them harmless for a few seconds (no effect on obstacles) Roobie: Able to eat many obstacles, but not robots or animals Swampy: Able to eat robots and animals, but will get full if it's used too much, and will have to wait a little to eat again
I was hoping you’d review this! I never played the first game (or, hell, even the original arcade game) but when I listened to you talk about its flaws, the thing constantly running through my head was, “Swampy’s Revenge does all that *way* better.”
I always believed the Dreamcast was like a PS1, N64 and PS2 just with similar graphics to PCs at the time Some good examples showcasing the DC’s ability are •Dead or alive 2 -PS2 •Marvel vs Capcom -PS1 •MvC2 -PS2 •Army Men Sarge’s heroes - N64 •Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver -PS1 •Grandia 2 -PS2 •Dino Crisis -PS1 •Alone in the Dark -PS2 Now •Frogger2 -PS1 •Ms Pac-man Maze Madness -N64&PS1 Compare these to their DC release and you’ll see what i mean.
My younger brother and I played the Windows versions of this game and the previous game all the time when we were kids. He preferred Frogger due to the aesthetics, music, and level design, while I preferred Swampy’s Revenge because of the much improved gameplay and the cute story. We had fun with both, and these two games are responsible for a lot of great memories for me.
Oh god, Nitro. I was given The Great Quest as a birthday present from my aunt when I was younger. I played so much Swampy's Revenge on PC that I was excited when I got that. You're going to fucking hate it.
With all of the problems you were talking about in this video, I have a feeling you’re going to love some of the later games. I grew up playing Frogger: Ancient Shadow and Frogger’s Adventures: The Rescue on GameCube. They’re so fun.
NitroRad: The times limit was also removed thank god, you can now spend as much time exploring as you want stress-free. That was a relief in my book, because when it comes to gaming you want to explore as much as you want! 👌😄😁👍
My grandparents bought this game on PC for when I visited, I knew it would hold up! A little disappointed you didn’t bring up the music at all, the tracks are really tight and simple, and they kind of get stuck in your head!
Were you aware that the PC & PS1 versions used early versions of the Dreamcast final music? You can hear slight changes for example with Super Retro Theme and Super Retro Theme (Alternate) on my channel ^^
I played this game as kid on my PC. I don't remember ever beating it, but i remember being scared of playing it without turning on the tv to play cartoons first.

little correction: Inputs are not only collected in between frames or during a specific moment in delivering a frame to a screen. The inherit lag of 30 fps is because there is less visual information for you as a player to process and new visual information takes longer to appear and not because inputs are collected and recognized at a lower rate. In fact, each button press interrupts a CPU always. Besides that, great review.
This is my childhood game here. My first PC game as well. I still have the disk, surprisingly enough. Works fine a bit, but I do want a new PC to try to play it again.
We always played this on our PC when I was a kid. It was definitely my favorite game. I recently downloaded it onto my computer from some website and it runs perfectly smoothe in 1024x768
Yo, I know this is 3 months later, but what website and what windows are you using? on Windows 10 for me the game is in purple and green colors only and runs on half the screen (altho that might be cause of my resolution
@@koraxx2085 I'm on windows 10 too. You kinda just have to mess around with the resolution a bit. It also helps to run the troubleshooter because it runs the game like it would on Windows XP
I only had the GBC version growing up, and played it on a GBA. Being born in the late 90's, I had just missed the retro console train. This looks loads better. Can't wait for you to get to "The Rescue" and the GBA games of Frogger. Those bring back memories.
I said this on the other frogger video but I played this one a ton as a kid (PC version from the framerate issues weren't nearly as bad) and I got it down to a science. I could complete the entire story mode in about 55 minutes flat. Very fun!
