After hibernating for a decade, the arcade hit Frogger returns in a PS1 reboot. Launching a long platforming series soon afterward. Let's see what this thing's all about. SOCIAL MEDIA: / nitrorad / nitroradofficial / nitrorad
Has this game just suddenly activated peoples nostalgia centers because I swear the past few months I've been seeing a surprising amount of people talk about this specific version, apparently the PC version also has a pretty active modding scene...
Yeah, was sort of hoping he would have mentioned that, guess it really was just a coincidence that he played this only a few weeks after I saw the video on the modding scene for the PC version.
@@setsers1 yeah! Its a game of memorization and high scores. Also i love frogs. Mastering this game makes you feel like a world record holder. Frogger 2 was way better though
12:02 *"Man, and I thought AAA was good at Donkey Kong, but you should see OOO play Frogger"* That was a good joke, I just wanted to appreciate it by leaving this comment.
Here it is, 7-year-old me's favorite game. Replaying it now, I have no clue how I got anywhere with it. As you said, the game just beats you over the head with difficulty.
It's a game designed for kids, really. Not by dealing with their age directly, but because it is the only age group that has the time to brute force their way through the game.
There's a reason older generation gamers like us are so hardcore. There was no easy difficulty and anything that wasn't trying to tell a convoluted story like JRPGs back then was mercilessly slaughtering you in the game until you either got it or quit it.
@@RotaAbyssian If you were lucky enough to have a parent that allowed you that time. There's probably quite many people like me who unironically have more time as adults than as kids because their parents are no longer around to strangle their freetime activity decisions.
@@Mayhzon also fair. It also doesn't help that the few games back then that DID have easy modes often required you to play on the harder difficulties to truly beat them...KONAMI.
@@RotaAbyssian we also had less games back then. So we made the best out of all the games we had. We may not be more hardcore, but we definitely were more patient.
To this day, one of my greatest achievements when I was a kid was completing this game. For the record, I don't recommend anyone actually do that. I was a stubborn child. And apparently had the patience of a saint, considering the horror flashbacks I got just from the video.
@@BigHailFan *Wrong.* I still have my gameplay footage on hand from when I reviewed the game a few years ago, and the combined total of the 100% completion footage comes in at 2 hours and 53 minutes.
This is one of those games that I played when I was so young that I actually can't imagine not knowing the layout. The exploration must have been hell.
Fun fact about Frogger 2: swampy’s revenge, the Gold mines music from that game was actually sampled and sped up to be used in the haunted ship level of Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Rush Adventure didn't sample Frogger 2, they both just happened to use the same beat that probably came from a third party music loop library. I remember hearing one of the same beats from that level in an episode of the Mythbusters years ago.
Actually owned this game YEARS ago and yes, I did beat it and yes, it was painful. What's more there's a special ending you get when you collect all the golden frogs in each world. Though playing the multiplayer mode with my sister was actually pretty fun, collecting frogs while doing everything you can to ensure your opponent loses.
I fully get the criticisms had here. But this was one of my most favorite games as a kid. I have no idea why but I was just way too obsessed with finishing it. This was the first game that made me rage, I'd throw my controller and yell. Never did that prior, and honestly never did it so much after either. But I grinded out the game so much for maybe two years and eventually 100% finished it. I have no idea how I did it. Tried replaying it as a teen and I just had none of my former skill. But it still holds a fond place in my heart and I do want to master it again someday. I think I just love dumb difficulty.
My grandmother was obsessed with this game. I've never seen anyone discuss this gem (imo) from my childhood before. 2 player with grandma is the best way to play.
Despite the massive trial and error, I had a blast with this game. I owned the PC port and had a ton of fun trying to master it, even though it was relentlessly punishing.
Nicely done and thank you for the kind words (Paul Arnold and I wrote the music and sound designed it - although you would never know since the only way to see the games credits was to complete the game which be blooming impossible!).
Christ. When the notification for this popped up, my brain mixed the first part of “Nitro” and the last part of “Frogger” and I thought you were trying to cancel yourself.
This game is my childhood, I played it for hours on our old family PC. I love the OST, especially... the only problem is the game is hard as heck, but with the infinite lives cheat it was really a much better experience- "no more road splats"
From the Airshow Antics level: Imagine if you were on your way to a destination on a plane, and you suddenly fall asleep, you find out later that you've missed your destination. You tell the pilot, Hey why am I on the plane still? And they say, well you missed your spot you wanted to get off, so now you will die for your laziness and stupidity.
I remember when I had this for my PS1, unforgivably hard. I didn't even make it past world 2, gave up and played crash bandicoot instead. Never really went back to it.
Lol I had a blast with this game. I had some levels down so good, I could do them in my sleep. The only level that roadblocks and I haven't finished till this day (sadly because I no longer have a way to play this game) was the final boulder and sewer level which were insanely difficult due to 1 particular frog is each level I could never get the timing right in order to get them
"Frogger 2 is next" YES! My only problem with the sequel is that it is REALLY short. If you know what you're doing the game can be finished from the first to the last level in 40 minutes!
I guess I’m a wacko, because I mastered this game. I played it so many times through that I memorized all the patterns, all the shortcuts, every level’s idiosyncrasies. Yes, this game can be hard, but once you get the feel of a level, you will own it. Even watching these brief gameplay clips again after all these years, I can feel the rhythm. That said, I had the PC version growing up, which apparently had a more forgiving timer on most levels (e.g. Big Boulder Alley, one of the most challenging levels in the game, gave you 99 seconds on PC but much less on PlayStation). Why that is, I will likely never know.
Not sure if anyone has said this yet, but there's a reason why so many things in this game seem like they're moving too fast, it's because they actually are. Strangely despite debuting in North America, the game was actually programmed in the PAL format which runs at 50Mhz compared to 60Mhz in NTSC we actually played it on, and the devs somehow overlooked that. Thus, the entire game is running over 15% faster than it was designed to.
Found your channel cos i wanted to just watch someone talk bout scaler and i dunno why but watching your old and newer vids it all just feels the same and its really Great.
I felt like an idiot when I was 8 years old and was unable to beat the last level. Now that I've seen this video though I feel like I was some kind of child savant for getting so far. I loved this game for its atmosphere, game feel, and exploration. It felt menacing and expansive at the time and it still gives me nostalgia.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE, NOT ONLY MAKING A VIDEO ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR FROGGER GAME BUT ALSO INCLUDING THAT SPECIFIC SPACE INVADERS GAME IN YOUR INTRO!?! You've earned a proud sub from me, my friend.
OK man... You absolutely have a lot of valid criticisms on Frogger's game design, buuuut... being someone who played it a lot as a kid, there was definitely an appeal to the whole "trial and error" format for a kid who had a lot of free time to burn. The gameplay was satisfying enough that I'd keep coming back to it, and the harder levels would take loads and loads of attempts, but that wasn't a bad thing as a kid. It just felt all the more satisfying when you finally did conquer one of those harder levels. Just the Uncanny Crusher and Big Boulder Alley levels were totally impossible then (and still are now). Also the high score system was fun for families with lots of siblings. But I realize I'm not in the majority here. Can't wait to hear you talk about Frogger Beyond. For once, I don't feel so alone anymore.
this is bringing back SOOOOOO much childhood anxiety - I thought I was struggling cause I had been a kid playing it but no! it's actually as brutal and stressful as I remember!
Nitro Rad thank you so much. I have been searching for Spare Parts for years. I played when I was little and I tried to find it for so long. Thank you so much for finding my long lost game.
I remember having this game as a child. Got it in a garage sale, popped it in. Instant childhood classic. My brother, mom, and I all just took swings at it constantly, day in and day out trying to inch progress out of it. It took as days to complete 1-2 stages, but the whole family gathered around it and I guess that's what made it fun. Even my mom who doesn't play games at all, let alone hard ones would be playing it when we got home from school and share where she was stuck and what she learned. No matter how many times we died, we couldn't put it down and we eventually through sheer determination beat it 100% legit. Going back to it, it's crazy to imagine now. This game is legit one of the hardest one's I've ever played
Swampy’s Revenge’s main theme has been in my playlist for many years now, and I thought I was the only one who, not only played these games, but also, enjoyed them. The first one was also extremely underrated. It’s a breath of fresh air to hear more about these games tbh.
You can do a video on the most obscure videogame that I've never played/heard of and I would still watch it. Your writing and narrating is always top notch man.
so many retro reviewers do the "putting the game in the console action shot" and then fizzle off of doing it, im so glad you havent stopped including those shots, despite being so small, it's so satisfying every time lol
Seeing all the Frogger games and realizing you're going to talk about all or most of them really excites me. No one talks about those later ones in any detail.
This game obviously offer much more than the original, and I find it very enjoyable to this day, may I say even more enjoyable than the original. The multiplayer was a blast too.
I used to play the Frogger GBA games on repeat as a kid. I don't know why, but man did I play those a lot. I hope to review them on my channel some day...
So....so much childhood. I remember playing this on the pic for so many hours. His complaints about the difficulty is NOT over-exaggerated. This is one of the few games I just couldn't beat. I may tackle it again soon. But man is this game a ball crusher. If you like hard games, play this. While it can be frustrating, it IS rewarding too. So I wouldn't say it isn't fun. Depends on your view on it.
Can you make a video on Star Fetchers, it's a game that I think deserves more attention. Only the pilot (episode 1) is out, so your video would bring more people to know about it.
DUDE, my nostalgia levels are tripping right now! This game was my jam as a little kid. I never played the original arcade titles, so this was my introduction to the series. My family had it for our PC, and I can't count how many times I played it on that old cube monitor (I feel old, knowing my generation will be the last to remember those). The 3D animated intro was something I always looked forward to. I don't remember ever beating it though, I think the farthest I got was the factory level. Sigh, memories...
Oh yeah i remember the Tv show for Ghostly adventures i liked up until the second season were it became nothing but fart jokes and i really hated that the main "mystery" just turned into a running joke like "Ohh here is a new antagonist character maybe they'd had something to do with Pac's parents!!!" sorry for the tangent.
@@daredrogers3884 I'm still glad Super Smash Bros was nice enough to give Pac (along with a few others) there one design yet and I'm still surprised out of all character Frogger himself Isn't In Smash at all.
This game was easily one of my childhood favorites, I used to play it religiously. I've been playing it again recently, and I'm surprised at how much harder it seems to play now, its like 8 year old me was a god of this game or something. I think I might've beaten the game 100% in just a few hours once, but I could never do that now lol
Childhood favorite right here making it to the end is so rewarding it was for me as a kid and more so as a adult...oh one thing sometimes you can hop so fast going over the baby frogs like in the factory level and can completely skip them. Still love this game to death.
9:33 "It becomes a matter of getting lucky enough"...Me and 10-year-old me would like to kindly tell you Git Gud seriously, this game is not a difficult as your complaints make it seem...
Bro I remember having Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge on PS1. I can't wait for you to get to that, so much nostalgia playing the multiplayer with my sisters
Wow, Frogger! I'm excited to see where this goes as I only played the one featured in this video back in the day! I imagine this channel has quite a few younger viewers in their early 20's or so who might be surprised at how mind-blowing it was to play games with multiple levels back in the day! When the NES came out with Super Mario Bros. no one was ready and many kids assumed they had beat the game after the first level since most people were used to games being a single screen. When the second level pops up and you go underground it's made kids go 😱🙊. The first time I seen a couple of guys playing Contra my heart sped up and I was like, "I NEED THAT GAME RIGHT NOW PLLEEAASSSSEE!!!" This was back in 1988 I believe, and my 5 year old self didn't know or care about being late to the new video game scene. I only knew how colorful it looked compared to the Atari I had at home and I guess that's where my excitement for video games really began in earnest. One thing I thought was interesting in the video was the fact that the OG Frogger had been in arcades only a decade prior to this game being released. That's crazy to me! In the course of a decade video games really came a long way! They move from 2D to 3D can't be understated; it blew everyone's minds. Most were like me who didn't play games on PC, so it was as if 3D gaming had only just been invented. Resident Evil may have had bad voice acting, but the fact it was there at all was amazing! That huge leap forward really helped video games become the juggernaut industry it is today.
Nice vid! Also kinda glad you mentioned that Space Invaders game, I got the ps1 one and it's a very happy memory (except when I was a lot younger and bosses scared me) That'd be a cool thing to look at in detail sometime but for now I'm gonna cosy up ready for frogger!
I remember playing Frogger on the PC in Daycare growing up, thanks for bringing back some amazing memories, I'm gonna see if I can get a hold of it again
You mentioned the camera and I IMMEDIATELY became aware that my nausea came from watching the top down gameplay lol. Thats a rough way to play something like this.
Man, I'm so glad you covered one of my most nostalgic games from the PS1! I'd love to see you look at that Space Invaders game (or maybe even Tetris Plus for PS1 as I think it's one of the more interesting iterations of Tetris).
Dude I can't WAIT for your next frogger video, I have a few distant memories of a certain ps1 frogger game I need revived, and this didn't ring any bells, so hopefully frogger 2 does the job
This was the first video game that I've ever played in my life. While I do agree that this game is frustratingly challenging, I still truly believe this game did show good efforts into showing the platforms and the obstacles that Frogger has to face on each level. I also thought the 3D animation for its time was pretty cool and the gameplay was pretty decent, despite how frustrating it is to complete.
I have a lot of memories playing this game as a kid. I didn't own it, but my cousins did and we would play it every chance we got. I remember being frustrated with some of the levels... Especially the sewer level. The original copy they had broke, so we were left without playing Frogged for a while. Many years later, they got it back as a Christmas present and we played it some more.
There's something weirdly funny about Frogger's face in the thumbnail. Just... that smug grin, the beady eyes, there's something there that makes me smile.
