From a Wheelie to Splat - An 18 Month Journey for Beginners

This was a big film project for me and the footage was taken over the course of 18 months. Going from a Wheelie all the way to learning to splat. I know I haven't arrived so this isn't really a how to video, but there are a lot of drills I outlined along this process. I tried to also provide a lot insight into the squat technique and the leverage I have learned to use to push through the pegs to generate lift.

Really good, can’t wait to try this! Reminds a lot of a couple different ways you can bunny hop a mountain bike… manual vs meerkat … this seams a lot like the stand tall like a meerkat pulling the bars to your hips

Your teaching technique is spot on! Love these videos. I have found exactly the same as you where most of the online stuff, the riders are so good that they don’t understand what they do, they just do it. I’m an ex British Champion road racer and club champion enduro rider, but in trials, very much a shite clubman rider trying to learn and teach my kids. As such, the way you’re breaking this down is perfect for me. Thank you, please keep going 😎

@@mrr4350 to get consistent at splats or the RSG Exercise? Boy, all depends on your learning curve. I'd say if you already do wheelies and have good clutch control, then RSG takes maybe 100 hours of dedicated practice. Rough guess

Great Vid amigo. I am down here in Chile, and have joined a trials club - more like a couple friends that like to get together and get dirty. Really enjoyed this video. I’m coming to the end of my first year. It’s really taken me this long just to get good posture and balance on the bike. I’m now looking to fine tune my technique to attempt bigger hazards. I’m definitely going to try the RSG it seams so simple and the fact you broke it down to explain the posture and body shape is really helpful. As you said the pro rider instructions tend to leave out that stuff but without it you just can’t do the trick.

@@TrialsProgression totally I think the fact that the top riders make it look effortless adds an element of frustration but also the hunger to get better. Keep going with the content, it’s great to see someone slightly ahead of me in this journey, especially when you tell us how long it took you to get things right. Kinda makes me think ok, I’m not the only one who didn’t get how to splat after three attempts 😃 👍🙌👍

Great explanations. Just picked up a trials bike, but not much time on it. I like the RSG approach as it eliminates the timing on the loading the engine at the right time. Will have to start trying this. Also have an enduro bike and can hit decent size steps using what is likely a mixed up splat / zap technique (do know as I have never filmed it). I can wheelie at all on open ground. I need the assurance of the ledge to know the I am not going to overcook things. That is slowly starting to change as I have been able to ride up over smaller obstacles while holding pressure on the back or carry the front wheel further over obstacles like roots or rocks.
@TrialsProgression
@TrialsProgression 2 года назад
Awesome! I'm sure you'll get there as it seems you are driven. With trials wheelies, you can do them going tao slow and bike is smaller so you can just jump off back if too high with front. I've got a whole playlist with short vids on wheelies. Cheers.

I cant even wheelie or use rear brake yet, but coming from bicycling, I instinctively use throttle to make kind of a boosted "bunny hops" or "pedal ups". Essentially a small splatter. I have used this to clear 1.5m gaps from standstill, or go over small obstacles like stumps etc. I still can clear bigger obstacles on my bicycle but man the moto trials bike feels like it has a huge potential once get to fully tame it. A 250 2 stroke really was quite a handful the first times for someone never ridden motorized 2-wheelers. xD

Great question. I turn my right toe out to the side and am NOT covering rear brake during squat. Check out the below video and skip to 1:23 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QChLiMcGQf4.html

@@TrialsProgression Thanks! Hmm, interesting. But how do you prevent tip overs then? Do you go back to covering the rear brake once the squat is done and the front is in the air? I find this especially hard with the squats where you bend the knees (for a splat) as by bending the knees my front part of the foot moves down on the peg hitting the brake.
