Dave Kunz grew up riding in the back seat of his aunt and uncle’s 1965 Ford Mustang. Years later, Dave was lucky enough to be able to buy that same car from them. Whether it’s the smell of the vinyl interior or the rumble of the 289 V-8 through dual exhausts, every bit of the driving experience transports him back to an earlier time, renewing his child-like sense of awe for the automobile.
If there’s one simple truth, it’s this: Days you drive that special car are better than days you don’t. Maybe it’s not the fastest, cleanest, or even most reliable car. But it’s yours. And every time you turn the key and hear that engine roar to life, something fantastic happens. Dave, I have a similar story... my Grandfather bought a V8 coupe new in 1965. I grew up enamored of that car, but never dreamt that it would one day become mine. After Grandpa's passing, it was bestowed to me; I am now the current caretaker and will one day pass it on to my son. It is still, to this day, completely original and unrestored. I intend to keep it that way. Every time I get into that seat, I think of my "Crumpa". The radio is only allowed to play the oldies station, and play in mono speaker sound it does, when I'm driving with the memory of my Grandpa.

There are those that drive cars to get from point A to B and don't care about the journey and are as happy in Prius as in a Ferrari but others like my self has always loved the freedom a car gives you and enjoy the experience of the ride and I never wanted a plain Jane car or truck, always something a little different, special to me. My current car is a beautifully maintained 1991 Corvette convertible with 6 speed manual transmission all stock but just driving it makes me smile.

I agree, me and my wife are currently discussing what will be our next car and we’re having debates on a 1965 or a 2019 brand new one. As much as I wouldn’t mind getting a brand new Mustang, I know it wouldn’t make me as happier as a classic one would. There’s something about classics, when it comes to driving one, it feels like it’s just you and the road. There’s no technology, no suspension bull crap, just you, the heavy and real metal and best of all, that loud, natural roaring engine. It’s beautiful. There’s nothing that puts a smile on my face more than that lovely engine (Hopefully my wife doesn’t see that lol)

So many in salt regions never had the opportunity to enjoy that cool car a relative cared for and would have loved to pass along Tens of thousands of fantastic cars never made it to the... generational finish line... One generous uncle with a superior taste in great cars and a recipient that appreciates the gesture

I owned a 1965 289 Mustang Coupe while I was in High School (Graduated in 1993) and had to part with it when I went to college as I needed a more highway worthy car. These cars are still affordable and I keep looking at them quite a bit. The parts are also so affordable! There's even opportunities to get a new engine if you don't care to not make it original. Theres so many wrecking yard Fords with 289,302, 351 W's with good transmissions that'll fit in these cars. If you are concerned about suspension and brakes not up to modern standards there's all kinds of disc brake conversions and sway bars and other suspension components. All of these are really reasonable. I've been thinking of doing a restomod with a more modern 302 and a T5 or Tremec 5Spd with Disc brakes and sway bars

I have a 1966 and 4 barrel 289. I restore it to original minus the motor automatic c4 It’s built for my daughter when she’s old enough to drive. But you have to same reason to own one. The look the smell the sound the drive. Everything you described. I now have 3 66 68 90 notch back drag car. And all give me chills. Glad to see others have the same feeling as me

Lovely looking 65 Ford Mustang. I've always loved this generation Mustang, between 1964 and 1969. And while the fastback is sporty, and the convertible is nice during the summer months, I like the coupe the best. I find it to be the most attractive of the three body styles. :)

I got my 68 when I was 13, im 45 now. I had a choice between a coupe and a fastback. My dad wanted me to choose the fastback but I just liked the coupe more and went that way. Very cool cars and I can relate with what the guy in the video says.

That was Great Dave! Really special video! Wish more were this way!🥇 I have the 66 coupe with 289 V8. I bought when I was 19, right out of High school; my first car. I still have it and just recently have been getting it ready to run after it sat 15yrs in my garage. I just bought a real 66' GT deluxe steering wheel that I can't wait to install. Luv the Mustang Coupe, a friend of mine had both fastback & coupe. He preferred to drive the coupe over the fastback. He said the coupe handled better.

My grandmother has a 1965 Mustang. She completely forgot about it, and I've been pleading with her to let me have it, because even though I'm not ASE certified, I know how to clean and put together a classic car. I even offered to buy it from her. She completely forgot about her mustang, and is putting more time into her dodge charger R/T. It's the perfect car for me because I don't drive a whole lot, maybe about a few times a week. I usually car pool or walk. But when I do drive, I want it to be a memorable experience.

My dad had a 1966 we bought new as I was a kid. It was not a fast back but was silver on the bottom with a black vinyl top and 289 auto and air. I loved the car but my dad never allowed me to buy it from him. Dang I miss that car. Mike

Dave Kunz! You brought me back so many memories!!!! My first car was a 1964 1/2 Stang. (which is what I think you´re driving due to the instrument panel and having no reverse lights). My grandma taught me how to drive since my dad what absolutely no patience whatsoever. Unfortunately I was too immature, (being 15) so I ended up ramming an AMC on the highway at full speed. The car was immediately taken away from me and well that was my first run in with the Po-po.

All non-GT standard interior '65 Mustangs got the rectangular speedometer. This car was built in January '65, and backup lights were an option. My uncle chose not to include them when he placed his order. But it does have some things that were on the early generator (aka 64 1/2) models, like the two-speed heater blower, clip-on window cranks and door handles, and a few others. Kind of a "transition" car I suppose.

That must be the same Dave Kunz that owns a real nice '68 GT, an exact duplicate to the Bullitt Mustang (in fact, better). He has been working in the TV industry for many years (California) which is obvious from his ease that put this great video together. Yet another fine Mustang, Dave!!

I had a '65 coupe at 21, with the 289 2 barrel V8. White interior, Caspian blue outside. It needed work, and I was well on my way to get it road worthy, but I met my future wife and had to sell to afford the wedding rings. There is nothing I want more than to get that car back, the exact car or something similar, but that rumble and vinyl smell...I hope it happens soon :)

My uncle had the first yellow 64 1/2 mustang to come to Ontario. I believe it only had the 260, not the 289, but I wish I still had that car. Unfortunately, it was stolen in the late 1980's.

My Mom's first car was a '66 Mustang Coupe, baby blue w/white vinyl top, 289 4spd with A/C....she bought it in 1967 when she turned 19....in 1969 she marred her first husband, who within the first year of marriage turned out to be so physically violent, he beat up his own mother when she intervened while he was beating on my Mom...he knew she loved that car, so he did everything in his power to get it in the divorce, which he did, and he refused to sell it back to my Mom, opting instead to sell it to his cousin for $100....she still talks about that car, she loved it....

Stock cast iron manifolds, custom 2-1/4 inch system with Walker Dynomax Super Turbos. Factory-style inline 2" resonators at the end with 2" turndowns.

My uncle bought the Magnum 500s in 1967 for a whopping $112 out the door, but saved the stock wheels and wheel covers which I still have. I found that NOS Shelby FIV steering wheel some years back and had it on the car for a while, but have since put the stock wheel back on. I added the Rally-Pac in the 1990s, purchased from a guy out of Texas who used to restore them and sell them via Hemmings. (They were not reproduced at the time.) I asked my uncle why he never got one, and he said he thought it was a clock and a COMPASS so never bothered!

It's a custom system, done at a local muffler shop for an article in Mustang Monthly years ago comparing muffler sound. The system is 2 1/4" (a bit of overkill on a stock 289), with Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, then factory-style 2" resonators at the very back.

I've been using Valvoline VR-1 20/50 lately, as it contains the ZDDP recommended for older engines like that.

It's a stock-type system that was built for an article on muffler comparisons for Mustang Monthly magazine some years ago. The writer asked me which mufflers I wanted after they'd tried various ones, and I asked for the quietest. They're Walker Dynomax Super Turbos. With 2 1/4" pipe, I still thought it sounded too "boomy" for my tastes, so I later added reproductions of the factory '65-66 resonators in correct 2" size, with the plain factory-style turndowns. (As a non-GT K-code would have come.) The manifolds are stock 289, and they've been on the engine since Ford put it together in 1965.

very cool car, but one thing what it is not - it's in not connected to the road , I have this car all over the road old school technology. what can Ford or any other car manufactures make retro look with new technology????

Since you have never driven this particular car, I will beg to differ. It has the manual (non-power) quicker-ratio steering, and a real wood-rimmed steering wheel. Trust me when I say that I feel every ripple and pebble the front tires run over. It is very much connected to the road.
