From Bare Fields to Permaculture Food Forest in Ireland 12 years on... 

I love going through some of the older videos to see just how far Bealtaine Woodland sanctuary has come!

Phenomenal job. Just think what Ireland would be like if everyone applied the same principles in their lives...we would be the richest nation on Earth. The raw materials are there, yet not one person in 100 has even heard of the concept. So much for our so-called Smart Economy and our so-called education system. But you are an inspiration and hopefully more and more people's eyes will be opened.

You have created your own little Paradise! Watching it is so therapeutic!

Thank you for this video. What you have done is so inspirational. How I love those Irish fuchsia hedges! You have such a lovely diversity of plants. I am especially grateful for the comments about propagation on a shoestring budget. I hope my tiny patch of earth is so lush in 12 years! A previous owner planted red cedar and maples on three sides of the property. Native brambles, salal, ferns and nettles have filled in many gaps. Sadly, all the alders have died since they covered over the irrigation ditch shortly before I bought the property, running the water through a large underground pipe. The first 18 months I spent watching the land and weather. We only get about 16-18 inches of rain where I live, but it looks like a rainforest here on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State in the US. The rain drizzles all fall and winter, but the summers are bone dry. The first winter here, I got some snow, but none last winter. This year I am trying to build up and prepare my soil - mostly hard-baked clay over glacial till. I've been strategically piling on mulch: wood chips, folded over grasses, or duck and goose bedding of straw or pine shavings. After the winter rains, I'll begin planting in earnest. I did put some "lasagne much" in a few beds I later planted with herbs and sedums with varying success. I'll be putting in quite a lot of deep rooted plants in hope of breaking up the compacted soil: comfrey, horseradish ( which my ducks love to eat), daikon, carrots, parsnips, salsify, etc. Even with the little I've done, wildlife is beginning to appear - there were no birds to speak of the first year. I suppose I need to get a garden shredder. Could you speak a bit more on how you created your paths? You've mentioned a few times about mowing them, and you mentioned chop & drop onto the paths in this vid. Was that all you did? Blessings!

Another great vid. How wonderful your fruits are. Got envious watching you pick raspberries and blackberries while you wandered through. The price of these are atrocious here in Oz and I consider a treat on a tight budget. Just luvly juvly and for a one woman show, heck you have achieved so much and created such a wonderful oasis and life for yourself.

I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to have you plant on their land.

A great view of your beautiful woodland. I was curious about the bamboo. Does it invade? We have some bamboo in Nova Scotia that is taking over native plants. Not sure what variety it is though. I'd love to grow some but worry about it getting out of hand.

So interesting you were talking about hedge rows. I was thinking about that this morning. How here in Nova Scotia Canada you don’t see that. Mono culture growing also. Our government is still allowing clearcutting of our old growth forest. Well soon be barren of trees also. There are groups fighting it, but ... Your woodland is beautiful. You have made me want to work on some under planting of bushes on my one acre of wooded property I bought here, across from my camp on a lake. Thanks for the motivation! 🌲🌿☘️🌳🌷🐿🦔🐀🐓

Totally agree with you about the awful label of `poor` land in the northwest, something that I have listened to since I was a child. Cannot stand it. Ridiculous.

I think willows are my favourite as they have so much different colours and texture.

Love it!! We are trying to do the same on our property and researching, amending soil with compost & planting as we go. Do you plant 🌱 oaks on your property? I’ve read they sustain more biodiversity than any other tree 🌳

Absolutely agree with all your comments about the EU. It's nothing less than evil. I've started to change my garden to permaculture here in the West of Scotland - a similar climate - and the results are miraculous, having struggled to follow the traditional rules of gardening. So glad we voted out of the EU, but I'm not convinced they will actually let us out of their clutches.

As always I very much appreciate your walk throughs. my garden this year is so hum drum. I'm rather ashamed of it and haven't made much of any garden update videos this summer. Do you ever have any problems with squash vine borers? If so what do you do? I'm getting ready tomorrow to pull up a huge squash plant because it's all of the sudden become infested. blessings to you, love the video :)
