This lecture is a treasure trove of information on the important work Dr. Edelman and his colleagues at the Neurosciences Institute have been doing for many years. I thank UCLA for posting it in spite of the video and audio shortcomings. Edelman is an excellent lecturer!

I had trouble accessing the (pdf of the ppt of the) presentation, but after a bit of searching on the wkdialogue site I came up with: wkdialogue.ch/fileadmin/original_presentations/wkd_20060914_edelmann.pdf

@hanalei169: 2. In light of answer 1, no. 3. No, information is both transmitted and stored in the configuration of neurons, axons and dendrites: transmitted in the sense that currents along an axon pass to dendrites and then to the soma, which fires or is inhibited by the signal, and stored in that the existence of a path allows a current to flow. The evolution of the network is the learning process.

@hanalei169: 1. The Theory of Neuronal Group Selection impies that the map is the territory, so a chip would have to have as many neurons as the brain it modeled, as many interconnects as that brain, and the strength of the interconnects would have to replicate the brain in question. As soon as such a chip was made, its configuration would diverge from the brain it modeled. So my answer is: no.

Ok. So he talked about the machine, the physiology what he didn't do was prove the brain is responsible for qualia I.e conscious awareness. He explained the quantitative and left out the qualitative. See my lecture/video "the impossible problem of consciousness"

Oh btw, this file is a pdf, but it can be viewed as a slide show by viewing in full-screen mode & using the arrow keys or mouse clicking, alternatively if you want it as a ppt file there'sa nifty little tool that I've used myself (and scanned with Antivir & ClamWin) here: boxoft.com/pdf-to-ppt/setup(free-pdf-to-ppt).exe to convert the pdf to ppt

I hear it too, well spotted And some idiot has their walkman/cd player on, definitely in the beginning and maybe for the whole thing. Maybe the tinny radio sound is from that.

Does anybody else hear that obnoxious music? It sounds like the cameraman had some loud headphones on and it muddled into the video...

i think the cameraman was lazy and just put the camera in one position and listened to music at full blast on his ipod. hope they get a better cameraman in other vids.

@hymnofashes: Edelman's work is a pure vindication of Evolution. There is no need in it for Jesus, a Creator, or even an unspecified "Intelligent Designer".

I would like to see the slideshow. The cameraman was lazy or did not know their job. Why not focus on the slides when shown? This has totally ruined this lecture. I am not going to watch it, it makes no sense without the necessary visual input it is supposed to contain.
