CNA's correspondents in China, Japan and South Korea examine the reasons behind the growing pressure and workloads facing teachers in East Asia that push many of them to the breaking point. In the first instalment of the two-part series, Michiyo Ishida finds out why Japan is facing a growing shortage of school teachers, with fewer applying for the job and record numbers taking time off or quitting, for mental health reasons.

MOE teachers are in much stress too. They have too much unnecessary administrative work, after class activities, useless meetings, and have to educate students that cotton does not come from sheep. The last one took up most of their time because CCS went around creating misinformation. Finally, they are all very much under paid. Teacher unions must go on a work strike and demand higher pay for higher workload.

Unfortunately, there are stressed out teachers, enabling parents and a host of other issues worldwide. They just don’t get much media attention.

This seems to be an issue for teachers in many Western nations as well sadly.

I was about to say just this. Teachers have this exact problem in Australia, NZ, UK, Portugal, even in Vietnam. Teachers are Earth's moral, ethical and social punching bags because no-one else actually takes responsibility for anyone other than themselves. Teachers cop it because our entire job is taking responsibility so therefore "what are the teachers doing about it?" or "what are schools doing about it?" whenever there's a big social problem no-one else cares to learn how to fix. This is worldwide. You want teachers to stop quitting? Stop making everything their responsibility.
