What would a successful high stakes poker player teach a younger version of himself? Here’s what poker pro Phil Galfond wishes he knew at 21!
🌟 Elliot Roe's incredible training course is something I really wish existed all those years ago: ➡️ galfond.link/PokerMindBoost
There are multiple important concepts and lessons that the Phil Galfond of today wishes his 21 year old self knew.
In ‘What I Wish I Knew at 21 (From College Dropout to Poker Pro)’, Phil Galfond begins by highlighting how structure may have been helpful in his poker journey.
Structure is a multi-layered concept for a high stakes poker player, from implementing structure in the way you play poker to maintaining your poker skills and structure when entering relationships.
Phil also highlights what it was like being a successful business owner as part of Run it Once Training, and then going through the launch and eventual sale of the online poker site Run it Once Poker.
Phil also discusses the value of investing.
If we’re talking about money, investing outside of poker allows you to diversify your risk.
If we’re talking about long-term growth, investing in your skills and investing in your physical health when you have the time available and it doesn’t cost you as much are paramount.
It’s also a key concept to seek out wisdom and mentors from those people who have actually accomplished the goals you want to accomplish.
As Phil highlights in his story featuring poker cash game coach Tommy Angelo, when they did their live coaching session in Las Vegas, he had no idea what he didn’t know and (more importantly) what he needed to know.
They didn’t study poker cash game strategy, but the poker strategy they did discuss was key in Phil developing long term as a poker pro.
Are you a new poker player or a poker beginner? Do you just need the best Texas Hold'em poker strategy and best Pot Limit Omaha poker tips, or do you have a high stakes poker related question you’d like a poker professional’s advice on?
Leave a comment and your question might end up in the next one of Phil’s quick poker tips videos or shorts!
Remember to Subscribe for more high stakes poker video content and turn on notifications so you don't miss any Galfond Challenge livestreams or other poker live streams!

@tomenglund6691 @philgalfond I am 22 , have been playing since 18. I want to take my game to the next level. I have good bank roll management, but lately I have not been playing as much due to work, trying to get my marketing business upfloat, with the cost of investments and living in California, it gets expensive. My last few sessions I have felt like I was not playing as well as I would. (mix running bad as well as not playing my best) I definently do not want to have my game downgrade, as when I was 21 I was killing it. The whole point is, since you are a young player taking it to the next level what are some tips / help to keep elevating, while with your bankroll management? I would appreciate a reply if possible. Goodluck on the tables Tom!

So u enjoy playing poker all day long and studying it? Those to things seem to be key. I remember thinking Dan Coleman was a big baby cause he hated playing poker, but after a while it made sense why he hated it so much, just was boring to him and didn’t like being around a bunch of degenerates all the time.

I don't even know yet if I'm gonna take the plunge to try to play even semi professionally but I really appreciate the wisdom and kind of calmness you offer me with your videos. As a guy whos been playing poker for 10 years now, in my early 40s and with a career. One of my biggest difficulties is setting my structure and stop / loss and responsiblity in poker. I'm surprisingly a winning player after 10 years of playing it took me a very long time. Really enjoyed watching this video. Structure is unbelievably important and responsibility. Poker is a game that demands the best out of you at all times. Great video. Look forward too checking out the Mindset Strategy Playbook.

I totally relate with the whole family & relationship life putting poker on the back burner thing. I lived in Vegas from ‘06-‘12 and played poker very regularly with good success. When I moved back home to CT I lost the convenience of being able to play live poker whenever I wanted, so I didn’t play as much. Well, many years later, a wife, home and foster child I hardly play anymore. When I do though, I definitely feel the rust in my game. I play online mostly now, but I’m not the player I once was. Someday I’ll get back to crushing it again, hopefully 🤞.

Thanks phil for another insightful video. Couldn't agree more with how much more valuable your time is once you get older. When I was in my 20's my job paid me $16-18 an hour now making over $30+ hour but with that increase in pay, typically comes even more workload and responsibilities, which makes spending your "free"time even more costly to use for studying poker. You also have less mental bandwidth to spare as well when you do. So ive replaced an hour of TV time a day and replaced it with studying poker instead.

this is really great. I think a lot has to do with fake self confidence when you are young. I could not admitt that I was wrong when I was 21. one thing I understand the older I get is that be always prepared to be wrong with your opinon. some people never learn this but the sooner you learn it the easier you can benefit. I still find it very difficult to identify a mentor/ coach as I usually want to learn something in areas where I know others might know better.

I wish I had this much content of nowadays, years ago when I started playing poker,I quit poker for couple of years and started to play again, I also wish there was so many different sites and freerolls as nowadays, could build a nice bankroll and might be at higher stakes now already Thanks for the content, I also like the saying keep a balance in life in everything that you do, and Bankroll management is very important as well as how to handle the bad lost or tilting days

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Phil Galfond is pokers voice of reason.

Great video. The part about mentorship at an early age is huge, IMHO.

Great content as always Phil. I don’t feel like I have the intellect or memory or discipline to absorb so much of the information that is available. I’m definitely a recreational player, who likes picking up bits and pieces of poker wisdom here and there. A lot of my (limited) success is based on having a fairly good knowledge of pre-flop ranges, and then intuiting my way to the river. I think I may be on the threshold of making more intelligent assessments of how the hand is playing out, and acting accordingly. I’m not sure why I’m sharing all this, apart from the fact that your vlogs inspire openness. Many thanks, David

Thank you for your openness! I have no idea of your intellect, but I can tell you that I don’t have a great memory, and that discipline is, at least largely, a learned trait - I didn’t used to have it.

@@PhilGalfond you’re welcome. One of the things I really like about this talk, is your mix in vulnerability away from the table (relationships, friendships, health, family, mistakes, short-sightedeness, etc). Only a handful of pros really do that in their material, and next to no one does it in the levels under the professionals. Too much street bravado and ego, unless you REALLY get close to your poker friends. Your vulnerability normalizes the dynamic humanism behind a poker player, and I hope more people optimistically pick up on it. There are too many miserable people in the player ranks lol

Currently 24, battling with things like thinking I know everything and lacking structure in my life, to a point where these are improving, but reassuring to hear someone I look up to have the same struggles at my age.

Followed u since early on.. big fan - wat size bankroll u had then. Wat roll do u recommend for 1. Non professional who plays 4-6 times a month 2. If non pro do we need to identify a roll , money is extra doesn’t affect family n bills. Thx
