Happy to have found this channel. Long time fan. Thanks for these tips and your insight. Tips #3 and #4 get me often. Often times I find myself playing outside of my means simply because I have experienced being able to outplay some mid stakes players (2-5 and 5-10), however, this video clearly educates me on how I must be more aware of the variance involved. I'll work harder on that.

Top 5 Poker Mistakes 1. Not thinking about why you are doing what you are doing. 2. Not thinking about why your opponent doing what he is doing. 3. Making decisions out of emotion: COMFORT is number one! 4. Playing outside of ones means. 5. Caring too much what other people think of you and playing to that.

This is undoubtedly one of the most eloquent poker players / poker videos I have ever seen. No hype whatsoever and it was so god damn refreshing. Phil, my request is, could you please put out a video for some of the more advanced things you'd like to share to say someone with 20+ years of experience. I'd be nice to get that from one of the best on the planet and you seem honest enough to actually do it lol Thank you brother.

@@PhilGalfond Hey Phil. You're very welcome. And yes of course that makes sense that you'd want to appeal to the masses. And with all due respect, I'm more like in the top 2 or 3 percent lol Just a matter of time before I climb that mountain I "should" have freakin tried to climb 7 years ago when I had the chance. I think you're probably one of the top 10 poker players in the world and I'm absolutely dying to join you. I'm gonna be at the WSOP on the 10th of Nov playing my fave game, stud hi/lo and then the rest of the lower n;l tournies. If you do have some advanced, advanced advice, just for me, I'd love to hear it lol Thank you so much again Phil.

Maaannn great stuff! The emotion stuff is so on point, I think alot of people also don't realize that it doesn't always associate directly with an emotion. Meaning for instance you don't need to feel "mad" at the current moment to make a decision out of anger. Also sometimes it takes a long time for the emotion to buildup before it even becomes an issue. ( which so happens to be my biggest problem lol) I notice this series isn't too specific or narrow like say a "cbetting OOP in PLO" would be, so I chose to ask if in the near future you could make a video about dealing with accumulated emotion? You could use your battle vs veni as an example. How making the right decisions and not being rewarded over a extended period of time can affect your future decisions without have any immediate emotional responses. Hopefully you get what i am trying to say. Anyway great stuff as always! Now I'm going to go watch an oldie where you explain how to fold a set in nlh lol
@PhilGalfond
@PhilGalfond 2 года назад
Excellent points and thoughts! And thank you so much for the kind words. I'll do some thinking about the topic you suggest. I don't know that I have all the answers, but I have dealt with it many times, and the veni match is a great example. I need to figure out how to create something out of that.

Phil G, do you have hands you favor and hands you find foretell disaster? I'll go first. Omaha poker hands that 90% of the time guarantee a loss: 4 cards that include K-8 or Q-5 or K-10-7 or A-7 -- not even if suited . The only way those combos survive is like KK88, QQ55, etc. Then, hands that play well, but aren't supposed to: Four cards that include Q-7 (often foretells someone has aces and the Q-7 ends up defeating with 2 pairs), and four cards that include suited 7-4. The hand I've defeated a lot of players with is QQ-10-10 double suited. I usually wipe out at least four of six players. This is on Pokerstars, fyi.

My game is a bunch of old Asian guys who pot the flop with their entire range with only 40bb, then turn over their hand when someone makes a nitty fold, and then they all turn both hands palms up and justify to the table why they played the hand, the most common refrain being "I have no choice, I have _____!" (Insert "flush draw, top pair, straight draw, no way to win unless I bet, pair, need protection, pocket ace," or literally any other holding.) As a determinist, I cannot argue with this.
@vegastb
@vegastb Год назад
In my home game the #1 mistake I think is, people play too many hands. #2 they only think about their own 2 cards. #3 They have no board reading skills. Could be 4 flush cards, 4 over cards to their pair etc. and they call river bets. In case it's not obvious, we are all just weekend home game players. 😂😂 My pet peeve is betting habits no matter the blind level or the street # they only bet the minimum. even if there is 10bb in the pot.

Thank you very much for the kind words and idea. I want to give this some thought. I'm confident in my decision-making when it comes to poker, but I can't say the same for myself as a businessman, so I would need to think harder about spots where I've problem-solved and am pretty sure it led to a good decision! I like the idea of a livestream - sounds like a Q&A kind of?
@somedudesdad3905
@somedudesdad3905 2 года назад
@@PhilGalfondthank you for the kind response. What I envisioned looks less like a q&a/ama ( which was the format of your most recent video ) more like a problem solving workshop. Perhaps you or you and another specialist/ business owner ( think ben86 or Gastrader ) review viewer submissions and talk it thru to define strategy/steps/tree nodes to solve viewer delimea. Less about the solved answer more about the mindset/steps y'all take to attempt the solve. +1 on the, “need more money than you think”. I’m a $35/hr winner in 1/3 over a very large sample, and I’m currently on a 15 buy in downswing over the past month. It’s had me mentally fucked up, but watching your videos has always helped immensely. It’s hard to watch these whales with 3k stacks in these max 400 games, and I can’t get AK to hold against 79o on AT7K (random example). I will continue to push through the variance though, and I feel once I reach 2/5, I will drastically progress as my thought process is way more in line with all the bigger games at MD Live where I play. Cheer Phil!
