In this talk, Gabriel Conte Cortez Martins, a junior at Yale University, argues that community colleges should be valued in their own right as institutions of higher education. Gabriel Conte Cortez Martins is a Junior at Yale studying molecular biophysics and biochemistry. Originally, from Brazil, Gabriel immigrated to the United States in 2015, residing in Miami, Florida, where he finished his high school education and attended Miami Dade College prior to transferring to Yale. Gabriel is interested in the intersection between science and humanitarianism, having performed research in Structural Bioinformatics and worked with Human Rights Organizations in the past. At the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, Gabriel received a national award for his research in molecular biology. After graduating from college, Gabriel wants to study public health and eventually pursue a career in medicine. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Pamela Frutos Facts, I’m hoping to get my bsn by 2023, to hopefully be accepted to a great Crna program, yet by 2025 they will now need a doctorate instead of a masters to enter the field. 💀

I’m a community college student, graduating this semester with my associate’s in physics and my dream school is Princeton University. I’ve already submitted my application for Fall 2020 but this felt like he was talking directly to me. I’ve met with a full-time STEM faculty professor from Princeton University and told her about my goals at Princeton and she told me “On the website it only says we accept community college students, but we really don’t. We usually lean more towards towards veterans. I hope you’re applying to other schools.“ TO. MY. FACE. Up until this point it was unheard of for a community college student from Jersey City to go to an Ivy League university at all for me, but this just restored all of my hope and faith. I’ve worked hard to be able to say I’m confident with my application. Amazing talk, thank you. Much love from Jersey! ✨

Thank you so much for this 🙏🙏😭 I’m a first gen cc student and have recently applied for transfer to BU, BC, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Columbia and can’t explain how much I needed this boost of confidence! I received an invitation to interview with Yale Undergraduate Admissions yesterday! If it doesn’t go further than an interview, the excitement of having tried and gotten to an interview will last a lifetime.

I'm gonna watch this video every single day from today until 06/15 when I graduate from community college, then I'll know where I end up. . . Wish me luck! 💗💯 UPDATE: 5/31/2023 Three years after my original comment, a lot has changed since. After all was said and done, I ended up attending our flagship school - University of Washington. I got into a few out-of-state schools (deff not Yale - didn’t apply anyway) but due to financial aid and residency requirements, it made sense to attend UW. Looking back, attending UW was my best academic decision; I couldn’t imagine what I’d be missing out on. I also learned another thing. Hot take: Ivies are overrated. I say so because we regard these schools too highly for their status that we forget the initial reason we’re applying to college in the first place. Ivies are mostly well-resourced and have outstanding connections/alumni networks, but if you don’t know why you’re applying, then it’ll be miserable down the line. I’m not bashing Ivies. If anything, I might end up doing a grad degree from one of them - who knows? All I’m saying is that college is whatever you make of it, Ivy or not. Have a clear during-and-post-college plan (or at least an idea), assemble your resources, then execute it. Anyway, I’m a 6-month grad from school and I did Mathematics. I’m gonna be a Business Analyst at BNY Mellon starting in the Summer, so I’ll move to Pennsylvania to start my new life there and then. Hope this helps. :)

This makes me feel better. I wanted to try again in Community College because I feel like I didn’t try hard enough during high school. I still had good grades above a 4.0 gpa and some extra curriculars. But I feel like I wasn’t good enough compared to my peers.

I know how you feel. I go to an achievement-obsessed private school and a good majority of my grade is in the honor society. I used to be in it, but I got kicked out because my gpa was too low this year. But yeah I might be compelled to use community college as a backup plan if my grades can’t compare well with many others in my class
@davidsngr5363
@davidsngr5363 4 года назад
Link the Chosen One funny, at my high school specifically my class (2021) the above average students (not the top tier kids) like the ones that usually make up the majority in the Honor Society decided to not enroll. Forcing the school to push the gpa lower in order to have enough members in order to operate.

@TheTruth27536
@TheTruth27536 10 месяцев назад
@@electricisnthereatthemomen6535 Honestly, I don't believe I did anything special to get accepted. The main thing was I took my time when writing my personal statement. It was something I put a lot of thought into to make it clear on what I wanted in life. I shared my life vision and framed it as a partnership between myself and the school to achieve this outcome. Also, I evidenced this vision with the coursework and major I did at the community college. Don't stress yourself with the "Ivy or bust" mentality. Do your best and you'll get a positive outcome, regardless of the school. Basically, as long as you aim high, you'll have a strong outcome. Lastly (and perhaps most importantly) if your community college offers you the opportunity to sign up for an honors program, sign up for it. My original goal was not an Ivy League school. I was originally aiming for a far lesser known regional university. However, I became aware of the opportunity to apply to Penn and other Ivies through the honors program. I only applied to Penn since they had a program that fit my goals. Had they not had a program that fit what I wanted, I would have passed on the opportunity and went with a non-Ivy that would have better fit my goals. I hope this helps.
