I am thinking the piglet story is not over yet. They were so much fun to watch, and so were the humans that were trying to contain them.

Wow... how far you've come in the past year, ocean to rural, transformed the property, adopted many animals, which have since given birth to their own. The similarities of piglets & puppies, big litters, ratbags that keep finding weak spots to get out of the yard. At least piglets can't jump high enough to grab your washing off the clothesline

Now, as soon as fiancée sees a new FRL episode popping up on my RU-vid Home Menu we have to down tools and snuggle in for a watch ... and that was one of the best (and most emotional) episodes to date! Not easy sometimes, the endless march of life & death & life & repeat, but you both handle it well ... not maudlin, not uncaring, not too emotional, and not too worried ... you just *do the right thing*, so good on you guys :) All the best to you for the coming months - it really does make our day to watch you smallholding and living the way people are maybe happiest to.

Piglets definitely win on the cuteness stakes. Our son bought 6 young pigs and within a year we had 'pikelets' all over the place. He would take a runt and it travel around in his car like his pet dog does now. Very quickly the population grew to over 70 even with selling alot off. We caught a guy one night who came into our paddock and shot 3 of them. We had a chase across the neighbours farm with the help of 3 constables. It cost him restitution plus the loss of gun licence and confiscation of his guns.

My dad bought a farm when I was in my early twenties and built it up to raise pigs. I helped with building the farrowing pens in the barn after we poured the concrete floors. My wife's parents gave me a female pig for Christmas and when the litter it came from was old enough to be weaned, I bought a second one. So, I was in the pig raising business with my dad, so to speak. I happened to be there when one of them had been bred and had her pigs. She seemed to be having trouble so I went into the pen to assist her. She would lay down and flop around on one side, then turn over and flop around on the other side. Finally, she was laying there, stopped flopping, and the muzzle of a piglet appeared and looked stuck. I put my hand on its muzzle to give it some gentle movement and the piglet just squirted out into my hand. The reason for the flopping I learned, is the piglet are arranged in two rows in the womb. It's kind of like shaking an apple tree to get the ripe fruit to drop. The sow flops and shakes them loose and they migrate down the birth channel then pop out rather quickly, to not block the way for the one behind it. The turns over as she feels the need to, to shake the 'ripe' piglets loose in the side-by-side rows.

Great episode. Shame the little one didn't make it. We live in Papua New Guinea where pigs are a way of life. A mature pig here is worth between A$500 & A$ 700. Dogs are worth nothing. A dog that kills a pig is cactus 🌵. Three sows and 17 piglets you are in the money. The dog however is on the temporary citizen 📃 list. All the best. 🐟 😁

Yum! You are headed down the right track with the sheet metal. Pigs are a visual critter (they can smell quite well too). If they can't see it they tend to leave it alone. A sheet of cardboard can be used to steer and corral piggies. Sure hope doggo was well and truly chastised for his folly. That can be a costly precedent to leave unchallenged. My family have been spreading the "steading" load in recent years. Each using their skills and resources to benefit others. Stange times we are living in.
@FreeRangeLiving
