I haven't even finished the video yet, but it was already very interesting. For example, it was especially fascinating to learn that the old ruins of Londinium for long period just stood there completely abounded while a new Anglo-Saxon settlement developed next to them.

Again first class work Pete and although I know a lot about history you added some extra knowledge. I'm probably not the only one who experienced it. I hope you once made something about Karl 10. Gustav's Russian War - 1656 - 1661 - and the life the soldiers - on both sides - were exposed to. Although I am Danish, I thought it was an exciting war. It did not change anything - besides hard times in Sweden.

Really enjoyed that. Thank you. One thing; you question the name Wulfstan from Hedeby, saying it is reminiscent of an anglo-saxon name. To me this is obvious. Hedeby is located i the Old Anglish territory, so they share ansestory with all anglo-saxons (or at least the anglish part of the anglo-saxons). Infact, most of the king-lineages/family-trees of the Anglish Kingdoms in Britain, begin with kings/rulers/people who lived in the part of Denmark/Germany, where Hedeby is located (Ubbe hin Sprage for one). That they use the same names is not a mystery, nor a coincidence, for me atleast. Thought you could have pointed that out *shrugs*.

Well done Pete! Thank you. It just occurred to me, the name Lunden (London-wik) is Swedish, and I believe it means "Grove". The college town in southern Sweden, just north of Malmo is named Lund. Perhaps this made them feel more at home? A compromise between London and Lund....Hmm?
@johan8969
@johan8969 4 года назад
Lund was Danish back then (was conquered by Sweden in 1679), although lund also means grove in danish. While a small settlement existed, Knud the Great massively expanded it and built a mint. The Danish minted coins had LVND DENEMEC written to destinguish them from English EADPIN ON LVNDEN. But Knud was notorious for accepting English culture too well for the Danes and Norwegians taste so dont know about the redubbing. Lunden and London sound pretty similart so it was probably just a spelling difference.

The map shown at 15:55 in the video labels Norway as 'Norsemen'. In truth, the Norse culture is shared by Norway Sweden Denmark Faroe Islands Shetland Orkney and Iceland. Although the founder of Norse culture, King Nor, seems to have created his kingdom in Norway, also the other mentioned areas are of Norse culture. Therefore Norway should be labeled as Norway, not as Norsemen, because the Danes Swedes Geats are Norse too.
@BamberdittoPingpong
@BamberdittoPingpong Год назад
Yeah but in a viking age historical context Norwegians often aren’t called ‘Norwegians’. Of course Danes and Swedes are considered Norse too, but in a historical context, Norwegians are often called Norse, separate from Danes and Swedes. It gets confusing because similar to Norse, all Scandinavians are often also called Danes, even if they were Norwegian or Swedish.
@eriktheviking927
@eriktheviking927 Год назад
@@BamberdittoPingpong the term Norwegian comes into existance when the country was turned christian by Harald Fairhair. From that point on they are called Norwegians... Before that this term is not mentioned.. Norway was a name used from the time of king Nor and onwards, so that is older. The country was divided among the sons of the King when he died so it was usually splintered into many smaller pieces. I think the main reason that all Scandinavians were called Danes was something that started around the time when Cnut ruled England, and Gorm the Old claimed to rule Norway at that time, claiming that he ruled all the Norsemen. The truth seems to be that they conquered parts of South Norway near Oslo, Vestfold and some other areas. But their occupation seems to have been shortlived, and they did not rule all of Norway and not Sweden either.. This exxaggeration by Gorm was continued by his son Harald Bluetooth. The next Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard also claimed the same stuff but it was a lie. the thrones of Denmark and Norway become kind of intermingled for periods in the 1000s AD, sometimes. It is still very inaccurate of the British to call all the Norse Danes in this period. But that's the way it was.

Heofonfȳr: decades ago the suburbs of London had 15 million people, so 20 M is possible today.

@@zoetropo1 Utter nonsense... you're reaching the figure by including areas distinctly NOT part of London... which is nuts. I mean you can't just add everything between London and neighbouring large cities... you could equally call them suburbs of Birmingham or Oxford or Canterbury or whatever! If London has a population of 20,000,000 then you are attributing a population of 0 to surrounding counties, cities, towns... like it's surrounded by desert lol What, do you draw a line from London to Birmingham and include everyone between? Fuck it, why not just include everyone on the OTHER side of Birmingham as Londoners as well! Maybe just try not being crazy... London and its suburbs have 9 million people living in them plus maybe a couple of hundred thousand unofficially. End of story. There are 56,000,000 people in England... 20,000,000 of them don't live in London...

@@zoetropo1 It was in the 60's that those suburbs were included as Greater London... that's how we reach figures like 8 and 9 million. The actual 'city' without Greater London is now just a couple of hundred thousand people in the square mile
