Home-milled Quaking Aspen makes good, hard flooring though it can be maddeningly slow to mill with a chainsaw.
What are my other options? And what else do I have to do all day anyway?

Hi Ryan. I know an old way that my grandpa did his floors. Get rope that is right size of floor & pack it in the cracks-then some poxy & let dry. He was born 1884 & started building his home when he was 13yrs old & home was done in 1899. Him & grandma lived their for 62 years & passed away. The home is still standing-beautiful & 2 story brick home. He painted it white & had 2 big maple trees in front. Each tree was the month-day-year each was born. When mom was born-her tree was put in back yard. They lived on the farm & grandpa cut all his own lumber. He got the property from his dad & got 50 acres for ($3000). He didn't owe anyone a dime. Had 100 acres when he passed--30 cattle & 2 little tractors from 1947 & did all his own plowing & no chemicals. O yes-the good old days. U are doing an awesome job on your cabin-can't wait to see it. U be careful-safe & God Bless.. Phoenix

This is probably a day late and a dollar short, but here goes. If I remember correctly, I once saw Boss of the Swamp build something similar. Before laying the floor, he rolled out and stapled bubble foil over the floor joists (he swears by that stuff for added insulation). After that, he laid the floor then covered that with a seamless heavy-duty tarp. This kept the floor from getting wet. He then built the walls right over the tarp and dried it in. Afterwards, he then simply cut the tarp out at the edge of the interior walls. Kept the floor dry the entire build simply sweeping rain out through the door opening throughout the build.

It’s strange to me that a few comments still try to give “practical advice” here. It’s kind of hard to understand why they are watching if they don’t appreciate The Way Of The Worm. I guess it’s still good for Ryan’s channel that they are watching and commenting. I think he should just keep doing what he does. 😁 Thanks for the video Ryan!

When we did our place, we built the floor, then the building. When the roof was up, and everything was dried out, we went underneath from the bottom and stapled insulation, 2x thick, then the Tyvek, and then fine mesh wire to keep the rodents out. Good luck buddy. Your property reminds me of Carp River. Love it.

I had a camp in Jackman Maine in the past. I insulated the floor with a single layer of 1/2 in foil faced foam board sandwiched between the sub and finished flooring. As soon as you mentioned that it reminded me how well it wotked, you could wald around barefoot no matter how cold it was. On a different note I have watched you from the start and look foward to the next upload. thanks

Bark...is the life blood of a tree In the Sequoya National Park in northern California there was thought to be the oldest tree on earth. It is called the "old grandmother". In the 19th century all her bark was removed as part of a train traveling side show. The train went to many cities across the US, at each town and city stop, a huge wire frame was erected with a crane and the old grandmothers bark was hung on the wire frame for all to see since personal travel was difficult back then... showing people this amazing huge old tree. As a result....the oldest tree on earth...the old grandmother died without her bark. Her dried dead trunk still stands today. It's was one of the saddest spectacles of man's greed.

I bought an echo 620p and a zozen chainsaw mill recently. I plan to mill enough lumber to make a 16x24 shed. But I've only got like 2 acres of forest and most of it is aspen and white pine. I'm unsure if I'll get the 500 boards I need out of what I'm willing to cut down but it should be fun. I plan to char the aspen shou sugi ban style. I'll probably build a fire then wire a few boards together in a triangle and put them over the fire like a chimney. That way I won't have to use a propane torch. I work with 8-10ft boards due to strength issues. I don't have any heavy equipment or even a four wheeler so it's all manual labor haha. I do have a handy rope trick for moving logs though. If you take a rope or tow strap, and loop it under the log, holding one end of the rope firm, you can pull the other end towards you and it rotates the tree towards you. You then just keep shimmying the rope to get your pulling length back. Really awesome and simple method that doesn't take a lot of effort. Sure beats lifting them. Another great tip is using a moving dolly, just load up the log on the dolly platform sideways and roll away! Great for long, wide open distances. I plan on adding some flat free 8in x 2in tires to my 3 ton engine hoist and use it to lift up and move logs. Not sure if it will work and pneumatic tires might work better but it gets used too little and I hate when my tires go flat. I'm not great on maintaining things 😅. I have big dreams but with my health issues who knows if I'll ever achieve them haha. I love watching your videos and I always learn something. I'm from Michigan too so it's cool to see what's possible in my own neck of the woods. It's very inspiring to watch you tinker out in the woods. I've always felt a calling to live out in the woods like you do. Have a great day, may God bless you! ❤

Forgive me if you already know... but... make sure you measure from the corners diagonally before you get too far along. The time to have done it was when the floor framing was completed. An 1/8" in the corner fit is a huge deal with cabins due to air leaks/water intrusion. Keep performing the same measurement check throughout the build.

Thanks for another great video, I can't even imagine how many hours of footage you edit for that roughly 45 min video. Very time consuming. I know you probably have the floor done but might be a good idea to put a layer of tyvek on the bottom of floor after you put the insulation in. I'm not a builder or anything but just reminds of the floor wrap on a mobile home. Might need to wear your chainsaw helmet with guard done to keep the black flies out. Me and the wife traveled many miles across the UP last week. From whitefish point to the lake of the clouds in the porkies. I just can't get enough of gods country up there. Take care until next video

well the floor is down thats awesome . you went through that stack of wood really fast . better to get busy and make some stacks up for what you need before the end of summer . its alot easier to dig a board out of a snow pile then to try and make boards in a snow pile . im sure im not the only one who is saying this . but hey looks great so far going to be a awesome little cabin . i would make it your living area for winter at least and if you need a work shop heck make a new one for that or even two . but this one i would make your home for now at least . you know one thing no one has mentioned or at least i dint see it is dude you need a bath room lol . out house with a composting toilet . would give you a great use for all that saw dust . would also be a great way to fertilize what ever . best part is you could do it cheap . little room with a five gallon bucket and a toilet seat would work . do your business and cover it with saw dust . make a area off in the woods some where for a compost site . still think you need a hand pump for water as well . you live in michigan brother you wont have to go down very deep . i bet 20 feet tops . you will thank your self later . just saying . if you did it and left the pump about counter level you could figure out how to set it up so its inside and use it next to a sink for running water indoors . it would be all gray water so you could run the pipes right out doors for run off and it would be fine . if you use it for the toilet thats black water and you would need a septic tank . now thats some real digging . so just thoughts on things you already know .

I keep hearing about that thin foil covered insulation for flooring to keeping bugs n mice out or there is a sort of cloth mesh Ive seen on mobilhomes with insulation on top or swimming pool covers are kind of a mesh type material found at "repurposed materials" once in a while. Ideas for cheap materials but sometimes they have various types of insulation as well mostly the square rigid sheets like pallet loads. And of course pallets are a cheap source of building material for all kinds of things they used to make furniture out of them. years ago I bought a couple cheap wooden chairs made from pallet wood. pretty modern looking but cheap furniture.

The cabin will be great for winter or any time. As far as cutting down those really high trees, a hydraulic lift with bucket for you to stand in would be great for cutting down the top parts of trees, whereby making it easier to fell them without them falling into something you dont want them to fall into, or whatever other reasons. That's if you can access a hydraulic lift. Just a thought. You have access to a lot of beautiful wood there.
