The 2024 Paris Olympics had a TON of crazy storylines, performances, and downright fast swimming take place. Among ALL of that it's easy for some swims to get lost in the crowd, but there is ONE swim that I’m sure NO ONE will forget anytime soon.
Pan Zhanle’s 100 freestyle world record.
This was one of, if not THE, best swims of the meet. Despite Pan entering these Games as the reigning world record holder in the event I feel like he was still a somewhat underrated swimmer, ESPECIALLY when compared to the heights he reached in Paris.

In the Chinese interviews and in an article with Denis Corterell, they both said he deliberately threw the 200m. To focus on the 100m events and relays. And Pan said he knows he won’t win against the 200m swimmers, so focus on the 100m. For the 100m prelim, he said he used Chalmers as a guide and didn’t realize Chalmers was swimming so slow

The main thing I was speculating on is why he would still swim the event in the first place, as opposed to declaring a false start or just not entering in the first place. But at least he didn’t just no show the event, that’s one of my biggest frustrations at high level meets when athletes do that and leave empty lanes.

@@TheSwimScribe I found an interview segment where he slightly touched on this matter, and my guess is that he's trying to get used to the shallow pool. Here is a rough translation from google translate: Q: Do you think the swimming pool at the Paris Olympics will have any impact on your performance? Pan: I think it's OK, no big impact, but this pool is shallow, the waves disappear slowly, it does have a little impact, especially in the relay. In the one-way, because I rushed out directly, I was always in the lead, so I didn't feel the waves. Then, in the events above 100 meters, I was in the 200 freestyle preliminaries, I was feeling the water there, I found that after 100 meters, there were waves when I turned around, and the waves were quite big, but it would have less impact on short-distance athletes like me.

Pan Zhanle said in a TV interview that during the Olympics he was deliberately slighted by certain US and Australia swimmers. He channeled his anger into the final: beating them all made him very happy. He also mentioned to have been drug tested ~50 times the year before the Olympics. He said he used to feel his strokes were bad, but later he noticed that everyone else is even uglier. Overall, he is just a young man/boy speaking openly and care-free.
@someone5002

He's a straight-shooter (but also very funny with his dry humor, which I've been enjoying all the personal videos coming out of China's Olympians tour of Hong Kong and Macau). Asians have a reputation (at least here in the States) of being meek and submissive, so I am supportive of Pan calling out his peers of the disrespect (though I never condone fans going overboard with threats and harassment in response). Put them on notice he's not taking that stuff without a volley. Poor Zhang Yufei sensed that same contempt, which all things considered she handled it well (even if she did cry on the podium but it could be a mix of emotions) with her haul of 6 medals (the most overall total among swimmers!). A shame Qin let all the excessive testing, backdating to last year with 46 (which was nearly once a week when US and Aussie swimmers are barely poked and forced to pee on demand) and at the Olympics every single day in the morning at 6, get into his head. But at least he got it together for the medley relays.

A pity Qin was more badly affected by the drug testings conducted at time of the day that disrupted rest and training. He in my opinion is clearly a faster swimmer than Leon Marchand or Adam Peaty as seen during their respective breaststroke legs in the 4x100m medley final (57.98s vs 58.62s vs 58.16s).

Maybe lack of long-form content. Yeah, nice history of Pan's progression and the guy has a good "radio" or announcer voice. Without double-checking this youtube creator's library, I think he should try interviewing some of the swimmers. Hunter Armstrong seems free with his time and he's very engaging in the interview (even asking thought-provoking questions himself). He's not short with his words either, so it's not pulling teeth with how some guests are not forthcoming.

For individual Pan has the most sub-47s so far with 5, while David Povici has 3. They were tied with 3 coming into the Paris Olympics. Then, Pan added two more sub-47s with a 46.92 for one of the relays as the leadoff leg and of course the WR 46.40. He also has the fastest relay freestyle split of 45.92 but legs not of the lead are not official, as they aren't coming off a flat start. Mark your calendar!

You're going to have to wait for his 50m free, as he doesn't plan to train for it until he's bit older when he bulks up some. Foremost it's the 100m where he's likely shooting for a 45 time. I've come across comments that in his latest interview, he plans to expand distances into the 200m and maybe 400m. He should be able to master 200m, as his relay splits are 1:43 and his personal best for the individual may be 1:45 (off top of my head).
