From Dolls to Disney, Gay Artist Advises “Don't Stop Your Children From Exploring Their Imagination”

Young Jozef Szekeres had only one thing on his mind at Christmas in 1976: a ballerina Barbie. Even at six years old, he knew it wasn’t acceptable for boys to play with dolls, but it didn’t matter - it was the only thing he wanted. Fortunately, Santa came through, making Barbie dolls an ever present part of his life. At least, that is, until his parents made him give up his 25 dolls at age 13.
Years later into adulthood as an animator for Disney, Jozef came across the Barbie aisle on an impromptu trip to the company’s toy shop. Suddenly his passion for dolls was reignited, and this time it was permanent. So much so that when he eventually left Disney, Jozef opened up his own high end line of GlamourOZ Dolls fashion dolls, bringing his love of dolls full circle.

I have a gay teenage son. He is just a beautiful soul, filled with so many facets and sides to him, traditional feminine and masculine qualities. One couldnt ask for a better human being. He is entranced by classical music. I have been contemplating taking him to the symphony. This piece has solidified that for me. Thank you!

Thank you so very much. 😍💕 Growing up as a kid in Australia, all the things I wanted to be or do... I was told by everyone was unachievable, as they were all off shore... in the USA. I saw Disney’s Sleeping Beauty as a 6 year old with my mum, and wanted to see it again. She said we’d already seen it (this was before home video). I didn’t really understand all that I saw... but I knew I wanted to do this that I saw on the screen... I wanted to be a Disney animator. When meeting with my high school careers adviser, she asked me what I wanted to do. I said: “Animate for Disney”. She laughed, and said. That’ll never happen, what do you really want to do. Disney came to Sydney Australia as I was doing work experience at the Hanna-Barberra studio, Disney having purchased the HB studio. At the end of the following year, I joined Walt Disney Australia as an inbetweener, becoming an animator within 4 months of employment. (The time between completing high school and joining Disney, I went to study music composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, doing only the first year of the 4 year Batchelor course, loving music, but knowing my deeper love was for visual arts). During puberty, I read the ElfQuest comics. Buying the 4 large books (covering the 1st series) with money I made selling my amateur character sketches I made for gamers of Dungeons and Dragons. And I remember thinking, if ever I did a comic book, I’d want it to be as good as an EQ comic, in story and art. In Australia at the time, there wasn’t anything of a comic book industry where I could see people earning a living doing comic books... just self publishing hobby comics creators. At the age of 21, the EQ publishers made an open call for short stories based in the EQ universe. I with 2 friends sent in our own application. They loved it so much, they gave our story with its characters its own series published during 1993-4, called ElfQuest/WaveDancers. When in mid years high school, early to mid 80’s, I was collecting the Masters of the Universe action figures, as well as owning several Barbie dolls (though, not openly to my school friends), which I loved and were endlessly inspiring to me. As, I’d make crude custom versions of mermaids and other glamorous fantasy characters using Barbie, and He-Man/She-Ra Dolls. I even added dried flowers and vines, and painted details to beautify my Castle Greyskull. My art teacher asked each student in his class what we wanted to do “artistically” when we grew up! I told him (knowing this was public discussion in a boys school), one day I wanted my own line of fantasy toys (a safer way to express that I wanted my own line of dolls). In front of the whole class, he laughed at my ideal career projection, saying “You’re dreaming... that’ll never happen, how could that even happen... you’re in the wrong country!”. In 2001, I sculpted my first 16” doll, self funding, and self producing it, releasing it in 2003-6. This was during the early days of the Internet. So reach was restricted, mostly through magazines. And now over a decade later... a solo creator like myself can introduce a new product with a global reach unlike before, due to social media. I self funded the inaugural production for my new GlamourOZ Dolls fashion doll line, having worked on site in China for over 4 years, prior to the doll line’s release. I’ve found things don’t always go as you plan, or happen when you want. But if you have focus, or in my case... several focusses, and can read the opportunities life presents to you... with drive, determination and some talent, you can make things happen, (maybe not easily, maybe not when you want... but eventually) even when everyone around you doesn’t or can’t see the potential that you see due to current finances, or geography. If you’re brave to go down that road, however scary or winding... the journey will take you to your destination... eventually. 😃💕

Wow! Look at the beautiful sculpting of hands. Entire figures are far more refined than stiff, clunky Barbies. Well done!

great message. parents, please don't suppress your child's innate character...it might not be what you thought you wanted, but you will allow your child the opportunity to grow, prosper, and succeed. suppression only breeds depression and regret. Back so long ago when i grew up, it was all social conformity and consumerist idealization...I think we're a little better now...I hope. so glad that Jozef had some amount of creative support, although interrupted for a while. his doll stylization is awesome.

I felt such guilt as a child for liking dolls. Even today I fear I caused my parents worry and concern. My facination turned to china dolls. This has become an extensive and valuable collection. Even today I do not "advertise" it.
