If you could invest in the seat belt or airbag before it was used in cars would you? Thats kind of whats at stake here. Luminar will make lots of money in the next 10 years as their products get slowly added to almost every car or truck. Even Tesla.
Definitely smarter than Musk as Musk said that Lidar will never be used in a Tesla because it's too expensive, scientists never say never because there is a possibility that they'll be exposed as slow, of course what happened a month later? A company said that they will eventually take Lidar to $100 soon and who knows it may cost under $1 to manufacture one day?
The company is substantially overvalued. He talks a lot and says little. Self-driving cars need to not only see but more importantly recognize what it sees. To do that, self-driving programs need to study a lot of data(hey program, this is what walking person look like vs a running person, etc). However, there is no data available for lidar sensors to study whereas data for cameras such as pictures and videos are everywhere. Lidar is a very useful technology but not for self-driving cars.
