From Farmhouse to Modern on a Budget: 8 Tips to Transitioning your Home Style - Interior Design 101

"Every choice must be intentional. Your home itself is a piece of art." This is gold, pure gold. Too many times, in my opinion, we fill our spaces with stuff just to fill the space. I've been guilty of this too. Less is more, so I've learned to invest in a few things I really love over buying a whole bunch of stuff just because it's a budget deal. If I took all the money I spent on lackluster things, I could have bought more expensive, nicer things.

This was perfectly timed! The painters have been here all week, painting everything BM decorator's white & BM iron ore on kitchen island -- a beautiful color. What a mess: kitchen cupboards, walls, built ins, ceilings, etc. They finish up today. YAY! I never realized until I took the rooms apart, how much STUFF I have that I don't like anymore. I'm donating a ton of PB, Thomasville and RH so somebody else can enjoy it as I have. At 68 years of age, I want simple, calm, and I don't want to compromise. I follow everything you do, and you always provide terrific, actionable suggestions. My house is California Spanish Ranch near the beach, so the lines are blocky and clean; and can easily adapt to a sort of organic modern without pushing the house itself out of character. I will be keeping some wood pieces -- weathered pine that has turned too orange. I will do a warm grey wash (that's rustic, I know, but the rooms are big and I like the pieces). I've tried one of your paintings and it really worked out. I'm going to do more! I've also used grey paint and spackle to update 2 heavy PB urn lamps that had a good shape but wrong color -- then I bought new slope shades from RH and lowered the height of the harp -- that is key to getting the right proportion and people (PB, Lamps Plus, C&B) don't do it. An $8 harp can change the whole look of a lamp. Anyway, sorry this is long. Just wanted to tell you how much your videos help clarify and teach. Much appreciated!

My Modern farmhouse exterior is White with black accents, my interior colors are black, off white or ivory, blue with medium brown leather chairs for the island. I think we have to really hone in on what YOU truly love. Too many are easily influenced by home decor trends. Glam , farmhouse, MCM, Boho. Then we buy it all at Target, Ross, Urban Outfitters, etc. Your home is PERSONAL. Buy what you love and want to live with.

I love it less is more. I don’t have a farmhouse hone I don’t have any style I would love to change my living room to modern I love it. Thank u for all the tips.

We don't need seasonings. That was too funny. I feel u on farmhouse and I think any type of mix decor style tend to look cluttered and unintentional if not careful. Can u do more of these but focus on other parts of the home?

What's interesting is I have read several times over the last weeks that so many people regret going the industrial route because their homes feel so hard and cold. No warmth. You used the term "industrial" several times. Modern can also feel cold. This is why folks need to not just jump in based on trends and minute styles. Cool to build off styles but make sure you love it not just follow it. JMO.

Hi KB, love your channel. I just bought a new home in South Florida which I want to decorate in a coastal style..not whimsical beach-no mermaids etc...I like Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel styles. I like modern elements too like muted gold stand task lighting,,,not table lamps. Nice framed art work etc. I would love to hear your take on making a coastal home still coastal but with modern elements. I understand California coastal style is different than Florida coastal but I find it a bit boring. Your thoughts?

Thank you for answering this for me and others, I've been primitive which is dark with colors muted or bright reds black plaids ect I have made a change to lighter my couch is 7 years old can't change and I have a black one in the basement I made the walls light gray in the basement and am painting the trim and doors black and simplifying and goin less as more my main level is slightly darker gray with light gray trim my the 7 year old couch that I'm not able to replace it's not old enough,ugh! (I want too and go white or slight off white )it's a little deeper than tan but not taupe so I've added off whites pillows a off white rug with Graige tone subtle lines in it I have painted the wood table off white like the pillows and I'm jus overwhelmed as to what to do to make it More modern this is bit normal for me I'm usually really good and I have an eclectic way of decorating I'm good but now I'm stumped so this helped tremendously!!! Thank you any other suggestions for me personally? I love all you do and say you're a phenomenal teacher ❤️
