My name is Andries Lombaard, a 54-year-old owner of EG Evolved Simulator Rigs, where we supply Racing and Flight Simulator equipment to the South African market. My passion for flight simulation began in 1991 when I purchased my first gaming PC to run Microsoft Flight Simulator. During the peak of Covid-19, I turned this passion into a business and have since expanded into building full-scale mine equipment simulators for training operators.
This video is Part 2 of my journey in answering the question: "Can a Helicopter Flight Sim Pilot Fly a REAL Helicopter?"
In January 2024, I enrolled as a formal student with 360 Aviation at Wonderboom Airfield, Pretoria. After completing 4 hours of initial training, I began transition training. At 8 hours, I started flying circuit patterns, and by 12 hours, we moved into emergency maneuvers. A significant portion of time was dedicated to preparing for my Initial Solo flight, with briefings and practical flying under the guidance of my instructor.
The big day arrived with perfect weather for my first solo. This video shares how years of flight simulator practice at home helped me quickly grasp basic maneuvers, accelerating my progress through the training syllabus. While 50 hours are required to complete your PPL (H), I aim to show how home simulation can allow pilots to spend more time mastering advanced training and emergencies, resulting in better overall preparedness.
It all starts with a dream. Enjoy the journey!
With a huge amount of thanks to 360 Aviation!
