Wow Siloé, honestly I did not want this video to come to an end. I've always been a fan, but to me, this video just seems to really stand out. I love everything about it. The video transitions, the background music, your special garden helper, your narration, listening and watching your method. Fantastic. Everything came together perfectly. I often wish your videos were an hour long simply because I enjoy your production that much. Your continued efforts and quality videos really serve as a driving source of inspiration. Thank you so very much for maintaining your channel

+Tim Huffman It's a joy to hear that my work is serving as inspiration. This has always been my goal! It is hearing things like this that keeps me inspired to keep producing new episodes. Thanks! I would love to be able to do longer pieces, Tim, and do this full time, but I'll do what is feasible for now. Thanks for your continued support!

Brilliant hybridization of no till and double dig and I think solves my dilemma of not wanting to bring in many yards of pricey compost to cover the cardboard layer over my hard packed lawn! Excited and very grateful! Been trying to figure how to solve this problem area for a year and you’ve hit the nail on the head! Thanks so much!

Gracious, that was fun! Thanks for the effort to bring me along. 3:40 It was all of them. Beautiful bed, beautiful video. Abs!

As always, great video Siloe. I like the cardboard technique you used there when planting the squash. In the past, I have used 6 mil black plastic, and it works well to kill the grass roots if you have a lot of time on your hands. The bane of my deep south gardening here in the Florida Panhandle is Stachys Floridana, or betony root. I honestly believe it has the ability to lie dormant 10,000 years with no problems.
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 8 лет назад
+Poppy B. Plastic works, yes, but I always try to use degradable materials that eventually enrich the soil. My sympathy goes to you in dealing with betony root. Weeds that put down tubers are downright indestructible! From what I've researched they may be edible. So there you go:-)

Terrific video. I love it that you have fun with such simple tasks. I have used this method a lot and find that, with our kikuyu grass, it does persist but after 2 seasons, the first with potatoes, (that's a summer and a winter for us here near Coffs Harbour) the grass gives up and then I can plant just about anything without too much weeding needed.Keep up the good work and the fabulous videos, they are truly inspiring and keep me busy copying your good work.

Siloé, Thank your for the beautifully made and informative video. In my experience I've found it easier to soak the cardboard in a large tub (maybe an old baby bath that Nathan has out grown) Soak for a minimum of 3 hours before laying the cardboard on the garden bed. The cardboard gets much more full of water and is easier to cut through - even with an old broken trowel!

My first attempt was beating the topsoil out of the grass which was a daunting task, the garden turned out great after mixing in organic material (worm castings, humas-manure and leftover potting mix). The next year, I just covered up the grass in the fall to block daylight and turning the soil was very easy with only a few clumps of grass. This time I used garden soil and composted manure from the store to feed the soil food web and it was a raging success. Also topdressing with worm castings and some trash left over in the worm bins, worked it in with a hoe while weeding. After plants begin fruiting, a light foliar application of fish fertilizer & kelp was used in late evening to boost production. 1-2 Tablespoons was used in a 2-gallon watering can and spread to 50-60 square feet to mainly wet the foliage. This method was applied every 2-3 weeks during mid summer. I think the no-dig method will work once the soil is well prepared, but you have to start somewhere to build the soil.

Nice video! My kids always loved to play with cardboard boxes!! You did a great job with that bed and had great results. We made three raised beds on top of the lawn. Did not remove the grass, just put cardboard on top and extra soil. A total of 25 cm of extra soil. The grass managed to come up!!!!! I couldn´t believe it. Now I am leaving my grass clippings from the rest of the lawn around the beds and my plan is also to cover the ground with leaves this coming autumn. What am I looking for?? Well.... since I don´t have space to make a compost pile, I just use the ground around the beds, and hope to have some composted material to add on top of the raised beds the following spring. We will see what happens!! Keep up with the good work. I always enjoy watching your videos!
@TheBushdoctor68
@TheBushdoctor68 8 лет назад
+ChezGra I would advice to put your grass clippings directly on the bed. It will function as mulch and mulching is one of the better things you can do for your soil and crops. It regulates temperature, keeps water in the ground and prevents weeds from coming up or settling in. A thick layer may have prevented that grass from poking through even. Mulch also adds nutrients to the soil while it's composting. All kinds of small creatures and bacteria will find their way in and start bettering your soil. It would be a shame if your paths benefited from all that, instead of your garden beds. If possible, mix some 'browns' in with your fresh grass clippings. That can be straw, dried leaves, sawdust, wood chips or even shredded paper. A 50/50 mix would be ideal, but any amount helps. Good luck getting that grass under control! It can be persistent..
@ChezGra
@ChezGra 8 лет назад
+TheBushdoctor68 Thank you for your advice. I thought the same but I was told that the grass clippings had to be completed dried before I use it as mulch, otherwise instead of adding nitrogen it takes it away from the soil. Also, it is very very..EXTREMELY humid where I live and mulch not always help. It can produce fungus and increase the appearance of different pests. That is why I thought I would let the clippings and leaves compost a little bit before adding that to the beds. I am not expert, I am learning on the way and appreciate all the advice I can get....even though sometimes it gets a bit confusing! Haha!!
@TheBushdoctor68
@TheBushdoctor68 8 лет назад
+ChezGra Don't worry about that nitrogen thing. It doesn't exactly work that way. Many gardeners mulch with grass clippings and have great results with it. Your only worry is that fresh grass tends to clump up if you put down thick layers and can become a soggy mat that decomposes slowly because it can no longer mix with oxygen.Hence my advice to mix in carbon ('browns'). Many people get sawdust or wood shavings from a local wood working shop or something. If you are still worried about nitrogen in your soil, then you can add used coffee grounds. Go nuts with that if you like. They release a lot of nitrogen after decomposing plus some other valuable minerals. If put on the surface, it will also deter snails and slugs. Don't worry about drawing in 'the wrong type' of bugs due to your area's humidity. In fact, I suspect the opposite will happen and your composting bed will be visited by a lot of beneficial bugs. It's what nature has been doing for millions of years, with a lot of success. :) If you really want to go nuts, then dig out your beds, cover the bottom with stumps and branches and build up from there. You will effectively be creating what's known as a Hugel Kultur. bed. Siloé has done a great video on that. Be sure to check it out and get your inspiration flowing! :)

Give children an expensive toy, they get bored after a couple of hours, give them cardboard or a rock. They play with it the whole day :) I wonder how much time cardboard need to decompose. Do you need to collect it after the season or does it just "disappear" ?

what would you recomend to till the ground 3 weeks before planting or till the ground and plant?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 8 лет назад
+Blaclone Badson Ideally you don't want to till at all. Growing systems like "Back to eden" or ruth"s no till gardening work wonderfully. When you must till because to jumpstart fertility or improve soil texture immediately I recommend tilling and planting directly making sure to cover with some kind of mulch (This works when you are transplanting fully grown seedlings like I usually do. If you are direct seeding mulching very lightly is recommended, adding more as the plant grows. The school of thought of tilling and waiting 3 weeks has to do with letting weeds sprout first killing them once they grow and than planting your crop. It also may have to do adding manure that is too fresh and not composted enough. The 3 weeks let the manure age a bit.
@BlackcloneGaming
