It absolutely warms my heart for the first accent I hear from a Labour minister post election is hers. (And I say this as someone who sounds a lot like Rory.)
They're always good to start with. Unfortunately, in 10 years time, we will be down to the dregs just like with New Labour in 2007 and the Tories post-Brexit.
What a superb interview, Alistair and Rory have that wonderful empathy that makes interviewees open up and reveal themselves more than just on a political level, Lisa Nandy is a star of the present Government and if the rest of the cabinet has her commitment then we are in good hands. Well done, can we have the rest of the cabinet over the upcoming months
Well Alastair does. For Rory it depends if they talk about inequality too much or not, then he gets defensive about groans on about "class warfare". Rory only likes her because he thinks she's some sort of secret member of the upper class, hence why he went on about her Lord grandfather and at the end said he thinks she's more interested in things like classical music than she lets on 🙄
Amazing woman and political figure. Lisa Nandy really understands and gets to the heart of what government should be. Not only that, but she has the ability to convey the issues in a down to earth and yet intelligent manner. It's time for her to shine as potentially one of the great leaders of our country.
Excellent podcast!!! And what great people the Starmer cabinet has!!! A hurricane of fresh air, a sea change...the best that the UK can be is now there for all to see. This is what the British people are all about, their best, and in the world of politics, but also in the world of the humanities...
Another brilliant interview, this is exactly what we need to have with our politicians in government - proper debates and the backstories of the people running the country. Lisa seems to be keen and very open about everything, safe to say I have more confidence in Media and Culture within government off the back of this interview. I imagine the TRIP team is doing all they can to get interviews with the current cabinet but this is exactly what I, and I think other young people, need from the government - understanding. I believe that, currently, politics is something that people have to go out of their way to research as if it is a hobby, when really it impacts us all, and I think younger people like myself feel that there’s too much to know about to understand things fully. These interviews piece things together in a casual, conversational manner and I really appreciate it. Thanks again for another great podcast, looking forward to see what Lisa will do in office
A great interview and really interesting insights into Starmer's style. Can't say I've always particularly liked Lisa Nandy but this really changed my mind :)
What a wonderfully quick, perceptive, and down-to-earth person Nandy is! So many older politicians don’t have half of her maturity and perspective, and she also has great energy and enthusiasm. This is so hopeful.
To paraphrase Andrew Marr, for the first time Britain has a state-educated cabinet with a core principle of secular scientism. In the current global political climate, the U.K. is a lone rare flower, blooming in a desert of poo. I feel unjustly proud of my former country,, and wish this government nothing but the best.
Not to be rude but... Her grandfather was a liberal MP, has a life peer, and was a member of the privy council... But yet she joked that Rory would have been more likely to feel like he belonged (or likely to to become an MP) in the house of commons.
Lisa is our MP and I’ve never heard her talk about her past. I’ve always respected her work ethic but never knew her background. She walks the walk. Great to see her in Government at last.
Yay Saga. What a milestone. You have overcome and you have come through the stress. And Chris is still with you. And you are right there is a time for everything under the sun. It's my cat's birthday today. She is 17 years old. I know what you felt when you lost and found your cat because it happened to me. I never cried so much when I found her.
I have a lot of respect for Lisa, she did a great job in the Hustings for Labour leader back in the leadership contest. She understands Brexit and the disenfranchisement of uk towns. She has the keys to change.
Alastair- I wish you had mentioned Robbie Gibb and his HUGE influence he has on Political and News output at the BBC & how bias they have become under him being on the BBC board
I campaigned for Lisa when she stood for the leadership of the party. She has always been defiantly inclusive, and unfortunately the various extremes have condemned her for it: some of the social media has been disgraceful. So proud she is still here, defiantly inclusive and determined to speak for her constituents and the people of this country.
A UK politician with talent, all that goes with that: coherent, well read, handles debate etc. Miles ahead of the tory gagle who could not put an argument together. Hope all, the other Labour MP's have the same qualities: repair UK governance.
Her answer on why former Tories should consider voting Labour was by far the most persuasive of the Labour figures they've had on. Will be interested to see if they deliver on that promise.
Give her a glass of water ffs haha great to hear Lisa speak so openly. And totally agree with Campbell, Rory has probably never felt imposter syndrome in his life haha
Well, dang, what an amazing interview and amazing political person. I knew brits had compromise in them (unlike americans, it seems). Keep it up, and find ways to cooperate with your fellow Europeans, and we'll all be stronger!
Lisa worked hard to save Wigan Athletic from extinction last year. While not local, she's been a great representative for our town and she's a perfect appointment to oversee sporting matters
I do not think that Sir Keir Starmer will tolerate any dissent. I think that Nandy is vulnerable. Long-Bailey, Thornberry and Phillips have not thrived. He may well axe her after a year.
Being honest, I'll admit, I didn't think much of Lisa before this interview, but, I have completely changed my view. Think you will a great asset for our government, you seem to already have a firm grasp of how to be culture sec, and I am confident you can do the role well. Go get em!
I love Lisa Nandy as a person. A real classy lady who is a credit to the Labour party. Would be great to see her as leader of the party in the future. Also I think highly of Rory too. Would like to see him re-enter politics as a Lib Dem member and get that London Mayor job he wants.
Keep your beating heart and soul on promoting the Arts too. Only the last 10 mins on music, arts and the theatre. Look how that PO drama at last got the focus and the action on that dreadful episode of miscarriage of justice. Press your colleague Bridget to get music and performance arts accessible in every school. Set that framework within your ‘Culture‘ brief. Yes. Please wax lyrical about the theatre and get those musicians on tour again. Get the arts properly funded. What a brilliant episode here. Well done all.
