The staff at Prestige Pawnbrokers are blown away by two jaw-dropping diamond necklaces, owned by two very different clients. Single mum Marcella is looking for a better future for herself and her son and needs £20,000 to kick-start her music career, while wealthy mother-of-four Ingrid wants to raise capital for her new horse importation and training business. However, staff member Patrick thinks that one of the necklaces could be fake.
James Constantinou runs pawnbroking shops in affluent Surrey, specializing in luxury or one-off items. His clients range from the very wealthy to the not at all wealthy. Ingrid wants to start a riding business and, despite living in a £1.5 million house, needs £40,000 in ready cash to get things moving, so she pawns a beautiful heirloom diamond necklace.
At the other end of the social scale is a would-be chanteuse and single mum Marcella, who wants to kick-start a music and songwriting career. She, too, has a necklace she hopes will be worth a fortune.
Posh Pawn takes us by the hand as James and his team examine the gems and keep us all waiting with dramatic pauses as values are revealed. Cheesy.

Years ago, I found a small piece of jewelry. Went to a pawn shop for an appraisal and an offer. I've heard that a pawn shop will offer about 10% of retail. I could see that they were very excited. But the offer was very low. So I shopped the Item. Found and accepted an offer at 4× as much as the pawn shop. Moral of the story: Always shop around.
@miamoore1666
@miamoore1666 2 года назад
First, you Never just leave your item with a shop they can take out the real diamonds and put in fake diamonds. Always go to a jeweler and stand right with your piece. If they say they need to keep it for their expert you tell them you’ll bring it back when their expert is there or go somewhere else.

if it is a very reputable high end pawn shop and the item is unusual or in the case of the necklaces there are hundreds of diamonds where each had to be valued, they are going to have no choice but to trust that the shop will need to have time with the piece, and they have to leave it there. If it is a small ring or something simple then yes stay put and watch the valuation as it happens.

I agree! I had to replay it both times the women with the necklaces accepted those extremely low offers!! I couldn't believe they took those offers! When you go to pawn something, you never ever let them know you are desperate, bcthey will always low ball you! And, if you have a item that you have no clue what its worth, especially something that you think is worth alot.. you should always get it appraised at multiple different places! That way you have an idea of its true value and worth, also if multiple people are telling you its around the same price the others are telling you, then you know they are not lieing! You never go straight into a pawn shop acting desperate, with something you think has incredible value, but have no clue what its worth and you are relying on them to tell you an honest price! They are very lucky that those workers were honest with them! They could have bought the necklaces for their asking prices and then sold them and made a fortune! I think the only reason they were even honest is bc the TV show was filming them and they knew millions of people would be watching!!

Also, let's analyze the complete transaction of that $500,000 necklace. She accepts a $50,000 loan on a $500,000 necklace. How is she going to pay that money back plus the interest on that loan? So when she defaults on that loan, the pawn shops keeps the collateral / necklace. At 10% of the retail value. Plus, the pawn shop offered her even more than the $40,000. I think they did this to ensure that she would never be able to pay that loan back. And then the pawn shop keeps the necklace either to chop it up or sell it intact. So in other words, the pawnshop isn't selling the item they're actually buying it a few months down the road. What the spider said to the fly? "Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly, “'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I have many curious things to shew when you are there".

They said quarter of a million not half, so it was worth a retail price of 250,000 and she got 120,000, and she sold it, she didn’t pawn, the last women’s retail price was 120,000 and she got 50,000, she as well sold it. So neither have to pay anything back, the 250,000 one already had a buyer, he told her they offered 120,000 which obviously wasn’t true because he keeps a cut of it, so I’m curious what the person actually offered.

This is the thing with pawn shops right? They will offer the bare minimum so they can get the maximum return when they sell it retail. In the case of the necklaces, quarter of a million over 120k pounds is 130k pounds in profit for them. Then the other necklace worth about 120k pounds in retail and she only took 50k. Seriously? There is ZERO information given about the diamond necklaces other than price -- no country/location where they were made nor by whom. This provenance adds so much interest and possibly value to the jewelry. For these high-end items, it would have been much better to take to an auction house even though they would charge a seller's fee. They would research, document, market and sell your item to a ready-made clientele.

In the 18 century it was normal to set diamond in silver. I know since I got a ring that I liked the setting in a second hand store. Not only the diamonds were real but the pearl was rare and when I took it to my jeweler I found it was 18 Century piece. I also got 6 pearl bracelets strung on rubber thread, they were from Persian pearls very real and large! No need to say I became a regular shopper there :)

I was disappointed that the gemologist didn't bother to grade the diamonds. Diamonds are graded by color ~ the whitest are Grade D, then by inclusions contained in each diamond, and of course by carat weight. The 10 carat diamond ring Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor was a "D" colored white diamond with 0 inclusions, which made it one of the most expensive diamonds in the world.

Me either!! Especially with the retail price being so high. Why not take it to a reputable buyer and sell it for closer to its retail price. I don’t know if Britain has sales stores like Zales, etc., which is really just a chain jewelry store in the US, but I know they have a section just for estate jewelry that customers bring in to sell because they want something different. Why couldn’t they have taken it to something like that rather than risking losing the real cost they could have gotten?

When you need the funds, it’s understandable. Everyone is different. At one point you say to yourself it’s just material.

If it were me, I would eventually sell the gorgeous necklace (I might wear it around the house a few times) I would sell it at Sotheby's or Christie's though. Unfortunately the only thing I inherited from my Grandmother was some chipped china and crochet doilies.

Most of these people are not selling their items, they are getting loans and using their item for collateral. On another episode they said 90 percent of the people who bring things there get the items back.

I remember myself couple of years ago, being in the university trying to be independent. I got two items from my grandma a 5ct diamond ring and a diamond bracelet. I pawned the ring and as a student failed to redeem the item. Only to find out that I got half of its real value. I could have sold it to someone who may able to offer me a good price. But I'm a busy student that and I can only say sorry to granny.

You don't take the first offer some gives you for a 250,000$ necklace. 250 is a number he just shot out at auction even though there would be auction fees but you don't leave 125k or more on the table.

Pawn shops are for pawning with the idea you will get it back and that is why they are traditionally cheaper. If you are going to sell, then go to an auction house or a jewelry store. Heck, add a couple hundred thousand to it and try ebay.

Not everyone out there is a crook. First off, if you know what you have is real (you should get a valuation done BEFORE you take it in to a pawnbroker and provide them with the valuation papers) then you are safe. Also, a high end pawn shop like this would never risk their professional reputation doing shoddy deals. I enjoyed the video so thanks for posting.

She thought 15 pear shaped diamonds of that size, plus all the pave diamonds, and the gold, was worth only 40k? Each pear could go for 10k by itself. Did she not even Google diamond values first?

You also NEVER leave a necklace like that with anyone for a few DAYS. Idk about in England but in U.S thats a known. Anyone can switch out real stones for fakes. When PAWNING something you take what you NEED, not what you can get. Otherwise when its time to pay back, you'll be in trouble. To sell it...you better educate yourself with your item(s) and get every penny you can.

I would have thought that the box with the paperwork in it would have been worth a lot more. As for the necklaces. Anyone can see that the first necklace was a work of art. glorious and one of a kind. I think it is worth a whole lot more than a quarter of a million. The other necklace was beautiful also, and I'm not sure about the price. The other necklace has big diamonds in it, where this one was smaller. I find it very sad that you have to pawn off your families history to feed your obsession, or dreams.
@moodylicious

correct. *Always the higher carat weight of diamonds, *if also of good color, clarity & cut, will garner greater value than something like the second, generic necklace of a hundred 1/4 ct brilliant cut stones. But it's not always a given. A flawless (FL or VVSI, (Very, Very Slight Inclusions) Colorless (D) 1/2ct emerald-cut diamond might be more valuable than a 3 carat, H (color), I3 (heavily included) shallow, poorly faceted round. All diamonds are not valuable. Industrial diamonds are used on marble cutting saw blades, down to tiny drill bits on your Dremel tool.

Lots of negative comments on here. Who are we to judge??? Just because the one lady was living in a large house doesn't mean she had cash to throw around. In fact I think they alluded at the beginning that she was asset rich but cash poor, which is often the case with some people. The other lady with the small boy clearly was having financial troubles. She said she wanted it for her music career, but in the end she was crying because she now had "financial security". They both wanted the money "now", so they took the offers they were given.
