From Profitec Go to Gaggia Classic Pro V2: My Honest (Downgrading) Review

Update: Gaggia just released their Classic "Evo" Pro with updated pressure valve and stainless steel component upgrades, as well as a chemically coated aluminum boiler. You can get the new version for the same price as the standard Classic Pro here: amzn.to/3pIGLB7. My personal opinion is it's a welcomed upgrade.
We have been drinking espresso drinks for a few years now. We upgraded to the Profitec Go espresso machine (Single boiler PID) 6 months ago due to the hype. We sold my original GCP. 6 months later, realizing how bad of a mistake that was, we bought another Gaggia Classic Pro, which seems to be version 2 with an improved commercial-style stainless steel shower plate.
In this video, I'm unboxing version 2 of Gaggia Classic Pro and sharing my honest opinion with you about why a high-end single boiler w/PID might not be an upgrade compared to Gaggia Classic Pro.
Gaggia Classic Pro Version 2: amzn.to/3FiWPOo
Some recommended upgrades I've discussed in the video:
Cafelat Silicone E61 Group Gasket (Red) amzn.to/3ZKbTN3
IMS Precision Group Head Shower Screen GA 200 IM (55mm for Gaggia Classic Pro) amzn.to/408QP2T
E&B Lab NT (NanoTech) Double Espresso Portafilter Basket 58mm Ridgeless (18 grams) amzn.to/3JfIDXM
Urnex Espresso Machine Cleaning Powder amzn.to/3FohAIC
58mm Blind (Backflush) Basket amzn.to/3LrWbSN
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored video; I'm not a professional full-time espresso machine reviewer, just a daily espresso drinker who wants a no-nonsense good espresso machine.

I got the Gaggia as my first machine after debating whether to spend more. Your video convinced me. Thanks. I’ve also replaced the gasket and the little screen and picked up a bottomless portafilter. Voila!!! Crema and delicious shots by the end of day 4. I remembered that years ago I worked in a restaurant and did cappuccinos … so the milk frothing has been easy- nice dense milk for my wife’s cappuccinos!! It’s a fabulous little machine and contrary to what I’ve seen and read about the steamer needing to be tricked to get full steam, I do not have that issue. I have played around with opening the steam a quarter turn for the first 4-5 seconds to do pre-infusion but I’m not sure it makes much difference. I think some folks get a little carried away. 😂😂

Excellent video, thanks a lot! Yesterday I ordered the Classic Evo Pro 2023 in lobster red, it will arrive tomorrow. I hesitated picking the older version in lobster red, which was still available according to the official importer. I’ve got both machines and am happy with both. I think the little more than double the price of the Go is worth it if you’re interested in trying different coffees, especially lighter roast coffees. If you have a coffee bean and grinder combo that you’re happy with and not thinking of changing then you’ll be perfectly fine with the Gaggia. One upgrade that is not mentioned in this video is the very easy swap out of the stock 12 bar spring with the 9 bar (can be bought from Shades of Coffee in the UK). The stock spring is over-sized in order to work with the pressurized basket, but assuming you’re never going to use the pressurized, then I think the most important mod to the Gaggia is the 9 bar spring. In summary, both machines are great value, and for me, a person who is always interested in trying different coffees, the built-in PID of the Go makes it a more desirable machine for me. The Go also has a much bigger water tank, much bigger drip tray, much better and fully articulating steam nozzle and many automated features that the Gaggia does not provide.

It’s funny, because I had the Gaggia Classic Pro and I thought after a few days I’d upgrade it to the Profitec Go even though I had no problem with the Gaggia at all, as you mentioned it heats up very quick and gets to steaming temperature quicker. The Go is very nice, heavy and good quality materials, but yeah the drip tray is flimsy they only put two tiny spot welds to hold the driptray, which can easily break if exposed to moisture for a long time. I actually kinda regret the purchase after I realized how long it takes for the Go to warm up to steaming temp. Then I ended up selling the go as I wasn’t drinking coffee for a while, but after a some time I started missing this whole home barista thing and had to buy something for a low-ish price as I can’t spend much money right now, so I ordered a new Gaggia Classic as I was actually very happy with it. Also wanted to add a PID to it, but can’t fork out 220 for a PID kit, so I found a video where they explain how to get everything for a DIY PID kit, so it only costs an extra 60 euros to make that happen. Really looking forward to using the Classic again. Also found that the Go’s pump was louder than the Gaggia, even though it’s supposed to be quieter, the tray and the watertank cover rattled a good bit on the Go and when I turned it off, it even did an annoying clicking sound every now and then, even after a few hours until I opened and closed the steam knob. After all, the Go wasn’t a bad machine, had it’s cons, but I’m not in the position to buy one for more than 2x the price of the Classic and don’t feel the need for it.

I was looking at the Go and was going to get it but after seeing this I realized I don't really care anymore. I'm not really an espresso snob so the Gaggia classic would fit my needs just fine. @Li Reviews Gaggia Pro without Gaggiuino, ito + leva! (or some similar espresso controller with PID, pressure control, gravimetric dosing etc) would be pretty hard to pull good consistent shots (from time to time you may be able to make one, but for sure it will not be consistent). If you went for the Profitec and the Ceado grinder, then you definetely have the budget for such a controller. I have installed ito + leva! 3.0 on mine and I am telling you, it is a must. Great upgrade to do. Highly recommend it.

I just bought an Evo 2 weeks (??) ago and I love it. Took me a little to get my grinder fine enough but the taste of the same beans I used before with my old All in One Delonghi is like day and night. Better than any coffeshop (most of them) because the baristas are overworked and do so many espressos that they stopped caring. Maybe I am wrong but how much better can a coffee be between my Gaggia and an $1500 machine? I don't really do milk so that has no importance to me. My palette is maybe not good enough for fine nuances but it just can't be $1000 (or more) better.

@TheGizmoGarage
@TheGizmoGarage 11 месяцев назад
I personally liked the ultra compact Bambino concept, saw and demoed a unit at local home goods store, and I'm generally impressed by Breville products. If I have limited space, I might just pick the Bambino. Although Bambino uses a smaller portafilter so it might not be as a potent shot compared to a 58mm portafilter. But you can probably get bottomless portafilter and a larger basket to compensate.

Is that dripping steam wand a weak point of GCP? I wonder how many of you faced the issue. Bought a brand new GCP this year. Dripping occurred immediately after removing the box. Gone for a fix (all this happens in Europe). The after-fixing note says that the steam valve was replaced with a new one, but it keeps dripping again, straight from the service. Now it is again in Gaggia's workshop. Very dissapointing.

A much steeper learning curve, but the shot quality is a noticeable improvement in spite of all the purging and manual stuff you have to do. @@TheGizmoGarage It doesn’t seem to have some of the quality issues you had, but it has its quirks. There are a lot of very sharp parts that cut and dig into other parts. The water tank is getting gouged by the metal guide pieces inside the machine, the water tank cover is gouging the black paint off the side panel, and the drip tray does not fit very snuggly and increase the pump noise. I just can tell that this review is no review, but an opinion about which machine he likes more. You can do great coffee on both, but as a owner of both, gaggia even with PID and pressure meter, the profitec is the better machine in nearly every aspect,, as I have commented before. Especially in consistency. Built in reminder for cleaning, PID which has to be bought extra for the gaggia, etc, the water tank, Jesus, in the gaggia rubber stuff hanging in the water, a solid tank in the Go! The Go is just the better machine. If you don't want to invest money, then buy the gaggia, but the Go is the better bang for your buck. In general, I would love to buy an even more expensive machine to really get 100% out of it, but the Go is already at a really high level of excellence. Would always buy again.

The Go is great. I have a gaggia with pid and pressure, also a rancilio silvia with pid, the go trumps them all. Much more consistency, better in every single way. Going back because it needs more time to heat up is a joke because it doesnt. Maybe the pid on the gaggia says ready, but it loses so much temperature when pulling the first shot, much more accurate on the GO. I was also a bit insecure if I really need the go because i have the other two ones, but after 6 months of daily espressi I can say it is worth the money. The only thing one can criticise is maybe that the lid of the water tank makes a bit noise if it doesnt lay straight during a shot, but thats really nothing and one touch and its gone. Have fun!

What I do wonder about is the proper silicon ring to use in the Gaggia: today I mounted the red 8mm thick one you concluded upon and compared it with the original rubber ring from Gaggia. The new one is exactly 8mm thick, but the Gaggia one, measured with a precise digital caliper is 8,36mm thick, very close to the 8,5mm value of the blue one you mentioned before. Now the grip points much more to the right than before. So all in all my conclusion is a 8,5mm thick ring may after all be the correct one to mount and I will order it too and see what happens in my case. Adding 0,14 mm seems hardly relevant compared to subtracting 0,36mm.. 😮
@TheGizmoGarage
@TheGizmoGarage 7 месяцев назад
In my experience red or blue ring all work, the difference is when locked where the handle sits (either to left or right 😝) but I have never had any issue with water leaking on our Gaggia over the years with red or blue rings
@donthuis
@donthuis 7 месяцев назад
I noticed after putting the blue ring in, the movement towards the middle position for the handle becomes more jerky and difficult. The red ring shrunk somewhat over time, making the handle move ever more to the right, so the two pipes aligned less well with my cups. I'll see what happens over the coming weeks with the blue one in. It is not a big deal, worst case the rubber OEM one can be put back... @@TheGizmoGarage

Let’s say my budget is around $1200. I’m planning on getting the Proftec GO as well as the Baratza ESP. People say I need to spend at least 50% of my budget on the grinder which doesn’t make sense because I just want something good enough for taste and the rest of the money goes into the ease of use and practicality (Like the PID). I just want delicious espresso without temperature surfing and all that but if I spend more on a grinder the best I can get is a stock Rancilio Silvia because a PID kit for that costs $200 with shipping for me anyways (Why is Auber PID so overpriced???). GCP steam pressure is....ok. I don't have the V2, but I did the OPV mod and it sucks. 100mL is WAY too small to expect any kind of decent steam pressure for enough time to make a drink. Well. This is really not a review but personal preference. In reality, 1. of course there are diminishing returns. That goes so far Bambino/Bambino plus can be easily good enough for the most people (if they aren't able to find any difference in taste between different beans, and especially if they are using only dark[er] roasts). But GCP is extremely hard to use with more difficult light[er] roasts. It is doable, but with a lot of experimenting with temperature surfing etc. 2. contrary to what is broadly believed, the pressure is not that important variable, it is possible to use e.g. flow control or optimise grinding instead (don't forget OPV sets MAXIMUM POSSIBLE pressure, not the pressure obtained in reality). But it is good to have one more variable to ... control, thus eliminate :D (and there are peer reviewed articles about this!!!) 3. on the other side, temperature control is more or less a must for lighter roasts (that's why I wouldn't buy machine without PID) 4. dual boiler for home, really? you was complaining about Profitec Go being "resource hog" for several ml of water consumption you considered "surplus". My dear, feeding 2 boilers costs MUCH more. You need dual boiler only if you need brew and steam simultaneously, and that's in commercial setting. At home, I wouldn't care. If waiting 7-8 min instead of 3 was a problem for you, any dealing with milk steaming in such a hurry you will probably avoid. When I am in a mood to play with milk it is usually when I have enough time for such playing. In the evening. And of course, dual boiler would have similar if not longer warm up time. With the system used by Turin Legato/MiiCoffee Apex, most of the hassle with single boiler is effectively solved. By the way, that's way better than GCP, close to Profitec Go (but instead of pressure regulator, this one uses flow regulation). For me, it is this one or Profitec (or Lelit Glenda or Grace with PID). By the introduction of Legato/Apex/whatever is its name, GCP is pointless choice. At the Profitec level, you have temperature stability of 200-300 ml boiler (instead of 80 in GCP), solved the problem with heating up to and cooling down from steaming temperature, PID and pressure (or flow, with Legato/Apex) control. That's really all you need and anything above that is pretty hard to justify, but you need these things for more difficult beans and even if you can find workarounds without them, it can be hard. By the way, grinder. You shouldn't go much below DF54 (Fellow Opus can be considered minimum) but also there's no point going anywhere above DF64/64V. Grinder is not universal saviour, but it is substantial part of the process. Above those DF64 and Profitec Go levels, it is usually a placebo effect. I don't really believe people can taste what I am unable to differentiate between by using GC or HPLC and NMR.

A modded Gaggia might be a nice thing especially if you are used to your routine. The big BUT against a Gaggia for me is the aluminum boiler - yes there are no 100% conforming studies but first researches have shown that aluminum is unhealthy and could cause/increase long-term health issues. That's why I will go with the GO.
@TheGizmoGarage
@TheGizmoGarage Год назад
Gaggia came out with their Evo Pro just a few weeks ago, with a "Teflon" coated boiler, and more stainless steel components to reduce scale and prevent aluminum from leeching into the boiler. amzn.to/3KuhHVJ You also need to understand even eco-brass contains lead, which is even worse for your health (0.09%). Aluminum has good corrosion resistance. This is because aluminum develops a thin oxide layer on the surface when the metal comes in contact with oxygen. The oxide layer protects the aluminum against corrosion, and if it is damaged, it will immediately regenerate, provided there is oxygen present. So unless someone physically scratches the layers inside the boiler, the aluminum boiler is very safe to use.

I like this one because it can be modified and it should be sturdy enough for next years to come. I am actually curious about boilers what you mentioned. Which one of all of them would be most high quality and why, heard it's brass? Also teflon coating is really bad as they say, at least from pans, it can stay in your body forever?
@TheGizmoGarage
@TheGizmoGarage 8 месяцев назад
@@serialchillerselection Brass boilers contain a trace amount of lead, but retain heat the best, teflon coated aluminum boilers on new GCP Evo are generally safe, as long as the Teflon coating is not damaged by running the boiler dry and heating the boiler up for prolonged time without refilling the boiler after steaming (high heat damages Teflon coating and flakes them) But since Teflon coating is a form of plastic, if you consume the flaked Teflon pieces they will simply be out of your system through digestive process. The coating will not be reactive when used in a boiler as the temp never reaches above 300F when it's used properly so you shouldn't worry about Teflon coating as those used in cookware where they are exposed to fire and high heat of the electric cooktop that exceeds 450F

@@TheGizmoGarageYou do realise you need to research before you post an answer. Pb aka lead is not being used anymore in coffee boiler production from large companies such as ECM and Profitec. You can email them to verify. Aluminium is a cheap solution - this is why it is found in cheaper machines. Because of this and their construction GCPs are prone to galvanic corrosion as they use brass in the group (trying for thermal stability) - the Teflon coating is aimed primarily at that. Until the EVO they used chrome-plated brass group which means it can flake chrome in your coffee. Teflon must be used correctly - current knowledge considers it safe if used properly (provided PFOAs - banned in 2013 - aren’t used) or else it can cause problems. GCPs get heavily modified (PIDs, Gaggiouino etc) potentially voiding warranty for one simple reason - they lack features and are laborious when it comes to thermal stability, brew pressure and steaming strength. Especially with medium and lighter roasts. If all you want to do is use a dark roasted and pre-ground coffee then a machine with additional features is not for you. Trying to convince people that an 80ml brew boiler machine is the same as a 400ml one is, well, questionable as far as to what you are doing in your workflow…

Thanks for the video! It's great to hear different perspectives. My bank account would love to settle for the Gaggia but I want to avoid having to switch in a few months/years if I can't ride the wild GCP. I'm no expert so I'm concerned of not being able to dial coffee and get consistent results... that's what I got from my research at this point. Regardless of the time to heat the boiler, what's the downside on Profitect from your opnion? I couldn't understand from your video what the downsides of profitec are. What I've heard from people with Gaggia for years is that: 1. The lack of a PID is an issue for increasing the variety of types of beans (since light vs dark roasts require different temperatures) 2. The milk foam isn't powerful enough to offer great texture The two above are my 2 main reasons to eventually go for Profitec (still deciding). I love light roasts and most reviews say Gaggia can't help much with those because of the limited temperature settings.

Gaggia recently released (in the US) the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, amzn.to/49baljX which features more stainless steel components plus a coated aluminum boiler to reduce scale build-up, as well as a 9-bar OPV as opposed to the original OPV with much higher pressure. My question for you is if you only use one kind of coffee beans (as we did for the last 3 years) without having to dial and switch different beans as often as monthly, then Gaggia is great. Brew pressure, temperature consistency (PID) in my opinion, at least for latte making, is not as significant a factor as a consistent, high-quality espresso grinder and accurate dosing of each shot. So, do spend more money on a quality grinder before putting $1000 on an espresso machine. I would spend more money for a Dual Boiler machine for consistent milk steaming if I ever want to upgrade from Gaggia, and not to a larger single boiler machine as it's more or less a compromise between speedy heat-up and instant steaming power. My one-cent.

Indeed the Grinder tip is commendable, I got a nice one as one of the first investments (I've got my current brewer as a gift, it's a De'Longhi setup with little room for dialling) and that was already a deal breaker compared to more commercial coffee "powder" hehe. But you brought up something interesting, I do consume cappuccino/latte way more than espresso and that's maybe what the PID stuff is not necessarily adding much to my "use case". My main concern is then Gaggia Steaming ..... I'm gonna try figuring out if the 9-bar one has been also released in Europe. Once again, thanks for the quality content!
