Buy the micro lathe from Aircraft Spruce and Specialties and put it on a Singer treadle table. If you could make it interchangeable with the sewing machine, you would be a badass.
For anyone thinking that Uri destroyed a priceless antique sewing machine in this video, he really didn't. Those treadle sewing machines were so ubiquitous in the early 20th century that even today they're rarely valued higher than scrap metal even when they're 100% complete and functional.
I've just picked up one of these sewing machine bases and looked on line to find ideas for converting it into a lathe or scroll saw - 'nutin!' Then, along comes one of my subscription channels with exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you Uri, can't wait for the lathe. 😸 👍
I do think that with some designing one could make a whole attachment for the scroll saw! Really only needs to be one unit and quick connect to the shaft and a few bolts to hole it down! Other attachments could be buffer, grinder wheel and a few other nice things!
I’m currently planning on building a multifunction workbench for this year’s diploma project. The catch is that it’s all handmade and will be used with only human powered tools too. I’m going to build a modular pedal/pump system so that I can use a sewing machine, a scroll saw, a drill press, and eventually a lathe and a disk sander. Hopefully I’ll come back here by the end of the school year with a blog to showcase it ;)
Uri, this is genius as it is simple. I planned to make a jigsaw from one of my old sewing machine tables and now I can refer to your plans instead of re-inventing it as it is exactly what I was thinking about. Thank you for sharing!
This is so awesome. I was just looking at old treadle scroll saws and thought "If only I could replace the needle of a sewing machine with a saw blade." and here this is.
Good idea for the saw and free schematics. People on some islands don’t have, or their electricity is intermittent and this can help with expanding how they produce from readily available items. Treadle sewing machines are pretty common in these places, so adapting it for different tasks is ideal viewing. This is a ‘share’.
I absolutely love watching your videos. There's nothing negative I could say about any of the ones you've made so far. They're entertaining and informative as well as engaging and humorous. And you are amazingly talented to boot. Besides Henry Rollins. ..you'd be next on my list of people I'd love to meet and talk to in person. Thank you for sharing.
🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️ 🔴 Islam is not just another religion. 🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. 🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. 🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. 🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. 🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: 📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚 🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. 🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him.
thanks brother... all because of your this amazing trick, now my sewing machine is also going to be transformed into like this one you have made. great
Your accent works particularly well with the type of content you produce. I could happily listen with my eyes closed and be happy just with the sound of your voice. I have to keep looking to see what's happening though!
Well done ,and off the grid power to run it ,thats how they did things in the old days with foot power ,Singer sewing machines like yours are fetching quite good money now a days here in New Zealand, Cheers and enjoyed, many thanks.
Dude....I got a foot pedal sewing machine a couple weeks ago for $20 U.S....the 18' lathe thought....got a manuel hand crank scroll....but wheels a turning...Love Your Mojo!!! Peace n Love People
Juhuhhhhh! You did id. The first time I saw that saw I was curious how its made and I wanted to make me one too. I've got two antik sewingmashines. And now I will make a lathe too. because I need one. Thank You, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks,..... I love Your vids so much!
Here in Finland those same Singer sewing machines were really popular and feels like all old houses have one. Most people have just turned it as a small table so it is interesting to see different more creative ideas for it. :)
wonderful! I was lucky enough to pick up an antique treadle scroll saw with an attached lathe, spindle drill and grindstone im in the process of restoring, some might disagree but I love the tactile response a treadle tool gives especially when working on the fiddly bits- power tools tend to take away a lot of the feedback from the piece making it easier to make mistakes in my opinion
Very nice Uri, more simple that I thought it would be. I've been wanting to get a Metal working Lathe/Mill Combination Machine for a while now. I could use that to make parts like Pillow Blocks for the bearings and so on. Again you inspire me. Although, I would make that a combination machine, you could have a Scroll Saw/Lathe in one machine.
Sorry Uri, but I love old sewing machines, and you did the opposite of what I would have preferred. Still, I do agree that these old treadle machine works are great for powering so many things. You did a great job making this a scroll saw. I'm still looking for a White Family Rotary Treadle machine from 1895 to 1905. Someday, maybe. Another great video. Regards, Solomon
Uri... you are amazing.. i have watched several of your videos, they are great.. i love to tinker, make stuff but not at the level you are...wish i lived close to you so i could look over your shoulder... thank you
I quite love this - partly because I have a desire for a scroll saw, and also because a treadle-operated tool is a very good compromise for occasional use. Indeed, now I'd like to build such a tool, but in a way that allows the treadle to be used to power other tools as well, like a die filer.
I have been wanting to make a foot pedal powered scroll saw from an old sewing watching for a long while now. Honestly I’d love to make an easy change over system, to keep the sewing machine as well…even though I forgot how to use one 30 years ago, lol.
How's it going everyone! I hope you liked this video and perhaps would like to make a scroll saw yourself. If you have more questions about the scroll saw that weren't clear I'd be happy to answer. here are the Improved Project plans: cargocollective.com/urituchman/Scroll-Saw
URI MY FRIEND! I have a little tip for you - bearings work better if they are really threaded down tight. The secret to keep them spinning freely is to put a small washer the size of the inner bearing races on both sides of every tightened down bearing. That stops things from rubbing and slowing from friction and allows the bearings to rotate freely even though the inner races are now effectively bolted down and immobile.
You're so inventive, I reckon you could make an all-in-one treadle operated scrollsaw/lathe/drill press/insert idea here, with each tool selectable by a simple lever! (that's a gauntlet being laid down lol)
Thank you URI. Your skills are amazing and you have given me hope of a small workshop for myself. I’m retired now and need to keep busy doing small projects. I’ve also learned many things watching your videos. Where do you get all your ideas? Please keep them coming and keep up the great work.
Uri, the scroll saw is the best DIY I have seen. We have an antique sewing machine bought new by my wife's great grandmother, but it would be my life to use it. I also have less space, I would like to reduce your plans and use a variable speed 12v dc motor as you did on your lathe. I assume I need your agreement to use your plans and would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, Norm
I love it man! Shame to sacrifice a genuine and largely complete Singer, but if you can't sew you may as well cut! Making a lathe is more in line with the medieval pedal lathes. I look forward to that build too. Great job as always, you truly innovate and I love to see your works in progress. Cheers mate :)
De hatalmasul tetszik az átalakítas igényes a kornak nem bumszli ,kecses, meg felhangoltad a fűrész ez jó . Mechanikalilag stabil és hozzáértő kialakítás szép munka!
Great job! I love the thought process behind these tools. I just wonder how easy it would be to create detailed work while seated and constantly pumping your foot. ? I think I'd prefer standing over my work on a scroll saw. I believe it would be easier doing lathe work while sitting but I'd need the work to be quite low. I'm anxious to see what you come up with. 👍
Been trying to find a good old sowing machine like that, there are plenty of them where I am but hard to find a Singer or something like that, and wanted to do exactly this, a lathe :) Now I don't have to I can just watch your video :P
You can make a leather-like strap with a piece of braided rope (the more cores, the better). Here's how: Step 1, find any video about braiding two rope ends, one to the other. Easily found, it involves splitting the ends in the original core pairs and then bringing them together. You should have a loop of rope that's taught on the hand wheel and on the flywheel. Step 2, get any rubber compound you can find. Can be plasti-dip, can be liquid sealant (electric liquid tape). Then coat the rope loop in it. You now have a strong, catchy alternative to leather. Step 2b, if you can't get those compounds, or you find them to be expensive, just get a MTB 26x inner tube, as cheapo (therefore thin) as possible, slice it in strips that fit in the groove of the two wheel pulleys. Get contact cement, and glue them in. You can then put the rope loop in. This does increase the diameter slightly, so if you go with this, be sure to make the rope loop AFTER, you've done this. Contact cement is easily removable with paint thinner, so you're not doing any damage to your antique sewing machine (just be careful not to spill any on your antique sewing machine, because that's when you're doing damage). I use this method on both of my Singer machines, i find it much more agreeable than a leather belt. Less slip, and cheap too. Getting round belt is expensive and unless you take care of it, it will become damaged and break at the metal clip/pin/staple. Cheers.
