I disagree with you. In my opinnion sombra is not tragic. Sombra should not have a tragic story, because in mlp we have too many tragic villains and there would be no message „ not everypony is good ”. besides, the series shows, that Sombra likes to torture others mental. creating a tragic story for him would be a mistake. ( I remind everyone that only my opinion and you may disagree with me ) King Sombra is pure evil, which makes his a very unique and interesting character in the show.

He did have somewhat of a tragic backstory in the comics

@@iwantsleep8079 Not sure, I never got around to buying any of the comics. All I know is it involves a mirror where Celestia, Luna, and Star Swirl find an alternate universe. Sombra is a good Prince and Celestia falls in love. Beyond that I really don't know what happens. I think the comics were limited in number and idk where to get them if they arent.

I don't want another Chrysalis, Discord or Nightmare Moon. King Sombra was a better villain than they were.

Well you never know. It was either Megan McCarthy or Lauren Faust who said that he was officially dead but maybe they will change their minds.

Even if HE is dead, some of his power could linger in the horn... and you know what they say about power corrupting. Just look what happened to Trixie.

Chris Gregory He don't have to be like the others villain, if you don't like him, fine, but he is not the problem, you just dislike the kind of villain he was.

ZsoronZ He could've stayed a smokey talking cloud for all I care, but he barely got any screen time and said one complete word besides grunts and groans.

Chris Gregory And that was is purpose! He was not here to have a talk like the others villain. Heck, he got more screen time in 40 minutes than Sauron in 12 hours , it don't prevent Sauron from being one of the best villain ever made.

Meghan's writing was already top notch in season 2 and 3. Also, Sombra is a better villain than Ganondorf.

Sombra in Season 9 was just as wasted potential as his other showings.

I don't know. Discord had the possibility of being brought back because he was just turned to stone. That can be reversed. Queen Chrysalis is also a possibility because she was just sent launching far away in the Season 2 Finale. But King Sombra shattered into crystal. The likelihood of him coming back just doesn't seem all that possible.

Justin M. This is a guy who can turn himself into a giant evil smoke monster of death. I'm pretty sure he's going to make a comeback eventually. Maybe even in season 5. Personally, I'd like to see him return, if only so we can learn more about him as a character.

I can whole heartedly agree to that. We got next to nothing more than "he wanted power because of reasons you don't need to know" with Sombra. Being one who LOVES over thinking things with a show, I'd like to think a villain is doing something for a reason important to them. Like Chrysalis being Queen of Changelings has to make sure that her subjects/minions/people are fed so... invading out of necessity. Fan theories are really the only thing we could have to work with to flesh out Sombra and Chrysalis, a bit here, piece there, until we can come out with a good backstory on the character.

I just rewatched those episodes, analyzing Sombra's role, and yeah - I mean, I guess he's supposed to be a symbol of those who are power-hungry and whatnot, but we never get to hear HOW he got power-hungry, or why. Many people like that tend to have a reason, even a vague, flimsy one. Did he grow up in poverty and decided he was against being stuck in that anymore? Was he born into royalty, and was bred to believe he was the only important figure? Did something external corrupt or possess him, even before he went full-on evil? Was he picked on as a colt and wanted to show the world how powerful he could be? What??? I kind of hope we get to see him, even just like in a flashback sequence, so we can find out more about him.

And the worst part is we will never know because the crystal heart turned him into dust

According to Sombra's timeline... NOPE!!! Look at the cutie map and you will see he has taken over more than half of Equestria... Celestia is losing the war against him in that timeline.

MLP, in my opinion, garners so much attention because there's so many references to things that most grown-ups saw when they were kids. Pinky Pie's pulled so many gags from looney toons that it's just a blast from the past. Not only that, but the large portion of the fandom that I've met aren't big on drama. Everyone respects different ideas for the most part.

If you go by the fact that there was an alternate version of Sombra in the comics who was a king (I think.) then yes. There would be a human version who wasn't tainted by dark magic... Maybe.

***** That's a fanfic. In the actual canon, there is ZERO backstory or character to the guy. I find it rather pathetic: you have an awesome design, powers and mythos potential. You have the chance for a genuinely chillingly evil villain, serving as the pony equivelant of Sauron. Instead, Sombra turned out to be a cheap imitation of the fallen Maiar. Sauron may not have spoke much, but you could clearly see his themes, sense his presence and a personality could be found from the actions of his men. Sauron was given a backstory and motive: he started out wanting power for order, but a deal with the devil led him to betray his good nature and want power for its sake. Sombra may weigh on the Crystal Ponies, but for backstory there's no history of his gradual rise, just "Pony Sauron comes and takes over." He's overall bland, and I hope that he one day gets developed into an actual character, perhaps in an Equestria Origins Story My theory for his backstory: Sombra started off as a minor figure. He was a young Unicorn noble, envious of his fellow nobles for their legacies. Sombra' family was legendary, but he was not-a shame to the great Shadow Dynasty. At first, Sombra tried to prove himself by studying magic, like Twilight. He proved skillfull, but still came up short. He would do anything to prove himself Then he began to have interest in black magic. The blackest of all magic, craft from Tirek. Tirek is the first villain of MLP, and essentially Pony Satan. His mentors warned him not to use black magic, saying that it feasts on his evil and corrupts him. He refused to listen. Sombra embraced dark magic, giving him immortality and the form of a dark shade. However, it magnified his flaws. Sombra believed that he shouldn't just be the greatest of nobles-he should be the greatest of kings Sombra first attempted his kingship by taking power, and his reign was...questionable. There were many who believed he was beneficent or orderly, but a notable fraction detested him. Perhaps they discovered his darker methods of maintaining power. Sombra was banished by rebels, and ended up lost in the Crystal Kingdom. Sombra's dark magic made him paranoid. He became truly tyranical that day Sombra, consumed by envy, a fear of his people and a lust for power, believed that ruling was not enough: he would have to stomp out the desire to rebel. And thus his rule of the Crystal Kingdom began. If you want a picture of Sombra's rule, imagine a boot stomping on his citizens...forever. And he not only found it practical, but enjoyable Through a mixture of his desire for a better rank, envy and his own dark magic, Sombra was less a unicorn and more a demon. For years, his tyrant rule remained unopposed-until his dark heart was noticed by the alicorns. They shattered Sombra's bodies, turning him into a spirit. And this brought Sombra into the pony we know Without a form, trapped for a thousand years, Sombra went mad. Notice how slowly he talks, almost as if he's struggling. The Sombra we see is barely conscious, only able to act out his most base commands

You know how in the crystal empire the crystal ponies have neither wings or horns but aren't earth ponies? I think the crystal ponies controlled the stars. But every once in a while a crystal unicorn is born. Sombra was a crystal unicorn who wanted something more then the stars. As for his name, Sombra is similar to "umber", the French word for shadow, but it also sounds like "somber" which can mean dark or dim in tone (e.e the stars appeared somber) or an emotion such as grave. Just a thought though.
