We come from a generation who insisted that we go to college right out of high school with no other options provided, lest we "never go back after life gets in the way." There was no career direction, I never once spoke to a high school guidance counselor about career options, scholarships, finance or anything else important. Then, when we end up with 220k in student loans, the same generation calls us stupid and lazy, all the while we're working 5 jobs to pay student loans. Lets just say, we won't be financing your nursing home bills.

My husband went to trade school I worked my way up through the ranks one son went to collage one didn't etc stop blaming everyone who held a gun to your head and "made" you sign loan papers

I’m 39 and I am a teacher with a master degree and principal license. I have a lot of student loan debt that I thought would be forgiven-wrong. I’m doing Dave Ramsey and I’m already seeing results. Best advice, don’t get into debt!

Esther yes. While I was in college I was told that there were teacher forgiveness programs. All of my Perkins Loans were forgiven through a program. When I started teaching, the school I worked at had posters from the federal government that described a loan forgiveness up to 17,000. However, I did not qualify because I took out my first loan one year before the required date. I applied but was denied.

Forget college and learn a trade. 27 years old and I have $170,000 saved in investments and bought a house at 21 years old. Live on less than you make, work hard and be intentional.

Steven G this is only sage advice for people who have no idea what to do with life, or have no interest or ability in practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in a given field. You’re not seriously trying to say that me at 23 making 85k with a degree (not boasting, but serves as a point) is less sustainable than your path? Where is the logic.? I get not everyone is as fortunate as I have been or as driven as I, career wise. But trust me when I tell you more than half the people I work with are under 35 and most are making at least 6% more than I am.

Max Contretas I didn't go to college and work a trade job making the same 85K all while never having a student loan payment, I also own a rental property that brings in mail box money so yeah college definitely isn't a requirement.

Exactly, there are too many students and i'd say at least 90% of them should not be there. Due to this issue, it has caused a multitude of people being unemployed, a new breed of worthless degrees and a large amount of student loan debt which some say will eventually lead to another recession. All of this simply because society has been conditioned to think that if they don't go to college, they will be a failure, which is not true at all. Now, we ignorant Americans are reaping what we have sown.

The older generations are the ones that stress that we need to go to college to succeed. Like people look down on jobs in particular trades. Those are going to be in high demand considering that they are skills and are being left open because more kids are being pushed into colleges. 😔

rainbow snout You really couldn't tell these kids anything. If you had told them to learn a trade or skill they look at you like you just spit on their foot. I'm glad my niece listened to me though. She worked through school. Didn't blow what little student loan she got on plane tickets and hotels for spring break,cell phones,cars,gaming computers,spas,etc.. And she researched a marketable career. She's works for LucasFilms currently in Singapore making $82k. I also had my nieces and nephews contributing to their Roth IRA since they were 14 years old. She' is the oldest at 24 and already have over $70k in her Roth IRA account.

Millennials are not staying at home with their parents because they are "saving money" - it is because they are incapable of financing a home. After college, you have an atrocious debt-to-income ratio, so no institution is willing to loan you more money. Often times, the jobs we were essentially promised and trained for do not exist, or we do not have the work experience required because we spent our twenties in academia. That's why you will find so many impoverished, talented, intelligent young people with bachelor's or master's degrees working low-wage hourly jobs. And you ask, how are institutions capitalizing on this generation? By feeding us delusional lifestyle promises through our youth, ensnaring us in fraud, and raping us with interest on borrowed money that never existed in the first place.

i am a millenial, college graduate with stable job in healthcare. i have no student loan debt. the only debt i have is my car loan which i will pay it off in less than 2 years. i dont live in an expensive apartment. i dont have my own house. i dont have a mortgage. i live in a housing called homeshare. its definitely a cheaper way for me to live without spending half of my income in monthly rent. i save 10% of my paycheck in a retirement roth 403b account. i am a millenial.

so not doing so good lol i have a mortgage 30 year fixed not unfixed paying 600 but i have a fiance so we split it so its technically 300 a month i save money in dollars but im saving for my retirement in gold as gold will be worth more dollars in the future thanks to inflation and dollars will be worth less im about to go to college online for accounting even though i would rather just work gain experience and move up. i am a millennial

I would say that it's very uncommon to find college graduates who actually fall into a position within their target carrier path. These people CBS is featuring are anomalously successful from what I've seen. Just about everyone I know is fighting a hopeless battle against student loan debt and has no hope of being able to afford a family or a home, let alone whimsical travel "experiences".

We aren't taught to care about money before college. Contrarily, we are taught that tens of thousands of dollars of debt is "necessary" and isn't a big deal! It isn't until we start having to pay it off that we realize how much money it actually is. I hope we can change this mentality; this is why myself and many others have made it our mission to try to educate about good money practices and a healthy money mentality!

It boggles my mind: A) That individuals from other generations are so quick to ridicule the millennials. For, it was, afterall, the prior generations that were responsible for wrecking the current economy. B) In the era of information others (between ages of roughly 39-58) are still unable to use the internet in its most rudimentary form and for the most trivial purposes. Others such as yourself are incapable of being critical thinkers, becoming more innovative and lack class. You all fail to see the necessity and the relevance for creativity from the arts to abstract areas which stem from such topics as ontology and esotericism. C) Older (usually conservative or/and Republicans) are unable to see the most obvious flaws of Capitalism. You (and many others) are unable to see that there is no REAL free market Capitalism in the US. Friend, I encourage you keep watching Fox news.

working shlub not only that other countries with better economies like Germany for example said tjeh owe it to apprenticeship programs in trades like plumbing, electrical and mechanics, they have a pipeline system from hs straight into apprenticeships and their economy is doing much better than ours. In fact I heard that we will start to mimic their programs soon. Certain things will just always be needed, that's like saying farming is outdated lolol people always need food sure there are advancements in farming technology but farming as a whole will always be needed. Same thing with plumbing etc

Its rather simple. Stop spending on anything that's not housing(this would include elec. and water), transportation or food. And decrease those three expenses as much as possible. If you are spending on anything else you're spending too much for someone whos broke.

A parent should never ever cosign a loan. Ever. They want to go and play for 4 or 7 or 8 years. Great. Let them pay for it. My daughter is so mad because that her payment is $1100.00. Per month. I hope mommy and daddy are not stupid enough to cosign a student loan. These kids want it all handed to them. Dont ever put them on your car insurance policy. Ever. Have them get a job and they pay for it.

Peter Northrup what happens if they are generous and want to help? My parents volunteered to pay off my student loans because they don’t want to see me drown financially. Because of them, I was able to save up a lot of money, move out, and buy a house. I never take them for granted and I know I owe them everything

A tale of two millenials. One spent 6 years in college to get a masters in education and went to work at age 25 for $32,500 per year to pay down $112,000 in student loan debt. He is now 30 and his salary has gone up to $45,750. He is still $77,800 in debt. He lives with his parents. The other got a job as a carpenter out of high school making $20 per hour which netted him, with some overtime, $43,100 his first year. At age 21 he started his own contracting firm. His annual profit in his pocket at age 30 was $117,200.00. His company is valued at $3.7 million..He just completed a new house worth. $385,000.00. Because of his skills, It only cost him $192,000 to build it. The truth is that college educated millennials start off far behind many of their "less educated" fellows and will never catch up.

That is the Exact route I took, Except I went to work part time at 14 and full time at 18. Graduated With A High School Diploma that was essentially worthless. Started learning trade skills at 13 Mechanics, Combination Welding, Pipe fitting etc. now 21 and will have a down payment on a home this year. All my peers who went to college are weeping Because they have so much debt and can only find employment at there local Starbucks..

Im 33 years, therefore I'm an old millennial. This "useless degree term" never came about until after the recession. My senior year in highschool, I had a teacher who told I and my peers that student loan debt was something that you take on as a means to invest in your future. All of my teachers encouraged students to go to college. Fast forward to 2008/2009 and now everyone wants to say we were stupid for going to school or gaining stupid degrees. There was no talk of this pre 2009.

Private university + Private Med School = 300k debt (interest accruing as I type). As long as we are able to work in the careers we worked hard to get into, we will be fine. If we hadn't been granted these loans, many of us wouldn't have been able to pursue higher education. It's literally, the price we pay for the choices we have made in life. Not all millennials are crying "poor me", while still living rent-free with mom and dad, that is an unfair generalization.

fangiscool1 Not everyone wants go be a fancy specialist and not everyone gets into a residency program. So you have debt for a profession you aren't working in. Even if you do become a specialist, there is a thing called "life" that requires other expenses. It is unrealistic to pay off school debts in 1-2 yrs.

Lol medicine? That’s a debt hole that so many people get stuck in. If you manage to get through 4 years of med school (without dropping out or failing step 1,2ck,3) Most docs end up as pediatric, family med, internalists (the lower end of the Doctor salary chain). Not to mention that today they graduate more MDs then they have residency spots. Don’t even get me started with people going for DO degrees and thinking that taking that same amount of debt is worth it. Medicine is no longer a field I would recommend going into.

I am in debt because I knew what I wanted to do for a career, and needed money to get there! I have traveled for interviews, had to buy good interview clothes, had to buy an SUV that's good for the snow and gas and two years later I got the call! I am $40k in debt with car and student loans. I will be working a better paying job, living happier and working to pay that off. You don't have to drown in debt, just have to be smart and if you don't know what you want don't go to school yet!

Not blaming my parents but people in general don't know what they don't know. I was pressured by my parents to go to college when I knew it wasn't what I really wanted to do. I took on 32K in student loan debt (which is relatively low) for a degree I didn't use. I graduated in 2010, started paying it off in 2016 and still have 8K left. I'm grateful to have gained the knowledge I needed pre college so I can enlighten others with my story moving forward 🏁

l went to a trade school for 1 year costs aboy 30k...LVN licensed vocational nurse...l make over 50k in one year and there are a ton of jobs and opportunity to advance.

It doesn't matter how much things cost. It is all about the experience. They will pay anything for an experience and rack up debt. They make decisions on what makes them feel good rather than keep economics (a.k.a. 4th grade math) in mind. Who else does this? Children. It is not limited to the generation being mentioned. It includes a lot of older people, too. But I can say with confidence that the density of those who spend like a congressman and expect the government or their parents will come to their rescue when they neglect 4th grade math is getting significantly greater. I feel that there is an alarming amount of people who will prefer to pay for a AAA membership rather than learn how to change a tire, for example.

Do you see a trend there? Don't just run out and do whatever makes you feel good and suddenly you have no or manageable debt. You may also end up with $10,000 pounds or dollars or whatever in the bank, and you are much better able to handle hurdles as they come up. It doesn't matter how old you are, but the opposite trend is greater with that of the millennial generation. Who's to blame? Well, probably the parents. The generation before. The ones with whom you work who don't give a crap as they are just riding out their time until retirement.

Private loans are the absolute worst, and I should know! Do not give up everyone, my family has paid off $28k in 18 months. It is possible to rectify your mistakes if you're focused and intense.

I work with millennials. Breakfast bought. Lunch bought. Dinner made by mum (of course they live at home). Leasing BMW cars, going on foreign holidays twice a year. Latest phones and laptops and of course, designer clothes. I wonder why they're poor? It's a mystery!

I've watched several of these videos on student loans and the difficulty kids are having finding a job in their fields of study. Why so many fail to research the possibility of employment after graduation is beyond me. We often think that colleges are looking to enroll the brightest most promising students but the student loan crisis proves quite definitely that they are actually preying on the dullest, least realistic students, ones looking for a dreamy education in dreamy fields of occupations. But then isn't that what the left prefers? And aren't they the ones overwhelmingly encouraging college education? How else will our children be introduced to a leftist mindset while becoming so desperately in debt. So desperate in fact that they will vote for an otherwise disgusting candidate, just because that candidate promises student debt relief.

I blame the parents for sending them off to college just to get rid of them. I hear it all the time. The parents should pay their debt. I have 5 children and it is my responsibility to finish raising them and pay for some or most of their college. Also why are children traveling when they still have college debt?

I’m 25, went to school for 3 weeks when I turned 21 and got a class A commercial drivers license. I make a little over 100k a year but I also live in CA so yeah it’s not super good but I live comfortable and my job isn’t very stressful. I can do better though, everyone can

I am an older American who raised two sons who are millennials. I always ask a Millennial who say they cannot make it on one job...the first thing I ask is how much student loans and credit card debt do you have? Do you have a SmartPhone, Cable TV, expensive vehicles? Do you buy Starbucks coffee every day and eat out? Are they wants..or needs? I don't expect Millenials to hit the same milestone we did, (marriage/families/homes) it's the student loans and credit cards debt that hey have that alarms me....Look at Dave Ramsey for financial freedom....You have no idea what it wil mean to not have enough money to retire....the future is coming faster than you realize.

Some millennials do need to consider before going to university whether it’s worth it or not, not only in terms of potential debt but the quality of the education offered and future career prospects. After all, you don’t want to end up with an extremely expensive certificate. If you don’t go to university perhaps consider learning a skill or trade (which will not be replaced by AI) or experiment with a side hustle business.

Brock Story gold and silver has no intrinsic value. I guarantee if the market collapsed no one is going to care about having metals. They are going to want food, shelter, services, etc Money is just an idea, a way to keep track of resources of how valuable you were to society. You got a rare skill in demand you won’t need to buy metals that are arbitrarily high in value due to weak demand based on perceived value of them. When money loses value, your skills or what you have to offer the world doesn’t.

I was 250k in debt but that all zeroed out by seeking out a down low married man I met. My sugar daddy was very wealthy and his wife never even realized that he paid off that type of money in a short period of time. @Carl Mannhard - In the U.S. we don't talk about salaries with co-workers because it's heavily frowned upon. It's not an official policy, but it's more like something that is understood. When it's discussed, it's with a very few trusted co-worker who is also a friend and done secretively. If one finds out the other is getting paid more and decides to complain to management, things can get very ugly. I can count on ONE finger the number of times I discussed salary with a co-worker.

Gerald N many struggle with dept form student loans, since many belived (partly rightly so) that a degree was the way to go in order to get a good life. I don’t personally know any millennials in the US (lives in Sweden) but from what I’ve gathered, many student loans have very high interest rates and are hard to repay, the tuition in many schools are also higher than it used to be, making the loans even larger. I believe that many are to afraid of looking at there loans so they only pay the minimums (that will cost more in the long run, sometimes the minimum doesn’t even cover the entire interest), so that makes them even worse off.

Late post. But, here’s my two cent. Lots of the Millenials do like to travel. But, I feel it’s an incredible over-generalization to say “they like to travel a lot overseas”. For every one person I know that does, I would say there are 10 who don’t... either they can’t afford to or just never have. This, like so many conversations, is led with the most privileged among us top of mind. For instance, I always hear about how many millenials live at home. I never hear about how many millenials’ parents live with them or are assisted financially by them. Among some communities, I think that number would be higher than one might think.

Sounds like a bunch of cry babies to me. They want to live in LA - and FOR FREE!!! You gotta make lifestyle choices sometimes. Maybe, living in the most expensive city in the US isn't such a good idea when struggling financially. Moving just 100km away from LA would save you tens of thousands, if the extra distance does not bother you. BUT AGAIN, gotta make lifestyle choices. just a thought.
