So let me get this right....When you think about it, you have to pay extreme fees for "YOU" to sit in class, you to study all night long, you to miss sleep, you to not eat very well while in school/ be a broke and starving student, you to do home work, you to take test and midterm/ final exams ect? Wow...why charge so much!? Land of the free...I wonder if this guy would call it "free" when he is struggling to pay 430k to exhibit his own brain power? I wonder why Ramsey didnt inform him about the many loan forgiveness and discharge programs that are available to health care providers (medical staff), and Public Service loan forgiveness PSLF, and so many more not to mention the income based repayment plans? Maybe because many people consider them socialist programs and they equate socialism to some evil deed. I like Ramsey but I question why he did not advise this man to these programs. I didnt hear any real advise other than asking him if he could become a nurse and earn a higher salary versus a teaching job. ?????

Hi Shinel. As a travel nurse I can tell you your expenses are not paid for by the hospital or recruiting company employing you. You receive a tax free stipend as part of your weekly salary and if you choose to take their housing (as opposed to finding your own on airbnb or somewhere else) they will reduce your stipend considerably which often makes it not worth while to travel nurse. It is in your best interest not to have your living expensive covered by the company. But you are 100% correct that you do make twice as much and it's a fantastic career! I love it. He will really have to work hard to find happiness in any career he gets involved in because he may feel like a failure for not being a doctor. I know he said none of those classes he took in medical school will help him in other programs, but that's not necessarily true. Programs have it to where as along as your classes like Anatomy and Physiology/Medicinal Chemistry/Microbiology were taken in less than 10 years, you can transfer them into other programs.

Even if he gets into one of those mentioned career, it will take him a life time to pay off his debt. I am a nurse. It costs me $200,000 to get a nursing degree (international student). After tax and living expense, I saved like 1.5-2k a month. It would take me 12 years to pay off 200k. Luckily I don't have to pay anything. He owes 430k. It would take him at least 28 years to pay off his debt. He has to be thrifty for the rest of his life. He he's sick...boom money goes to medical bills. If he's perfectly healthy for the rest of his life, he can pay off his debt at the age of 62-64 or so. That's pretty much at the end of a person's life.

Hey James and Dave, I am from the Lexington Kentucky area and I might be able to help with this. I have seen people do this in the past. So, Lexington has 2 VA facilities, while working for VA you qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness after you have made 120 payments from an "accepted" repayment plan. That means after working 10 years in the VA system (not as a doctor) you can have these loans forgiven. One accepted repayment plan is the income driven repayment plan. This will have him paying less than what the interest is occurring. After 10 Years your debt will have increased, so you will have paid nothing toward your actual loan balance, however you can have them forgiven. This is the route I would take. I know it is a little against Dave's teaching, but abnormal circumstance call for different options.

The third had a test anxiety thing. I also know someone who worked as a doctor for 5 years and good not pass board certification. She had to resign. She can no longer practice as an MD. She has a decent job with a pharmaceutical company but misses practicing medicine. Boards are taken after M2 year, M4 year and in residency and if you do a fellowship. Boards are standardized tests unlike most course work exams in med school. Don’t judge this person too harshly. Who would ever foresee this outcome?
