Welcome to the BRRRAKE F1 Podcast Episode. In this episode, I got to sit down and chat with Liam Lawson. We talk about his experiences going to Japan and racing in Super Formula, and what that meant for his preparation for the unexpected call-up to drive the Alpha Tauri at the Zandvoort Grand Prix, to replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo.

By the way, Alex Albon did not race super formula. No idea why I said that 😂

To be fair, he did DTM in a strong field. Reckon that helped him a lot. Same goes for his team mate at the time, a certain Liam Lawson

Blake, this is a 2023 highlight! Excellent interview/conversation with This Fine Young Star from NZ, to me a real revelation and what a promise for the future. Covering just about all grounds! This vid is for keeps as far as I'm concerned. Truly hope you will be doing many more conversations like this in times to come, particularly with those drivers that have it in them to fill the Grid in the future! Thank you so much!! Greets from Amsterdam. To both!

A great conversation! Being a big fan of the Super Formula Car in iRacing (which Liam had direct input on) it was great to hear more about it from the horses mouth. Sounds like it's a great stepping stone to F1 that F2 needs to look into otherwise drivers will be going to Japan to ply their trade instead. Also hopefully Liam gets that permanent F1 seat sooner rather than later. He seems a Top Lad 👍🏻 Great interview Blake.

The warmup laps he talked about bring a certain mystique to the race as well. Seeing the cars fly around a few times just showing you that in a few moments theyll be barrelling down the track is chilling. We do it alot for sprint car races over here to break the track in a bit and its always the most badass part of the night

re: push-to-pass vs. drs - what about if DRS was available at driver's discretion at any point around the circuit, but could only be used for a total of X seconds each lap (variable per circuit)? Obviously it'd be dangerous around corners, but drivers aren't dumb, right?

I believe if there was another series like Super formula but globally (not F1) it could have been very popular sadly the CART series of course shot themselves but still sometimes I wish there was another open wheels series as fun as Super formula but worldwide

Great interview! Loved the questions and the approach to the interview, different from a TV interview in a good way. On YT there is a bit more freedom to dive into technical stuff and Blake took full advantage of that. The one question I would have liked you to have asked is what gives a better preparation for F1, a grid full of young drivers with at most 2 years experience in the car (F2) or a grid with all different kind of levels of experience in racing the car and tracks? (For a while now I'm thinking that F2 should become a partial professional series (all 2 teams have 2 cars and 1 of them should be for someone with less than 2 seasons experience and the other can go to a more experienced driver) because I think it prepares drivers better but also bc F2 champions that don't go on to become F1 drivers than have a place to without having to almost exit formula racing bc there is no place anymore)

A long interview with Liam is something I really enjoyed on Beyond the Grid, but you really asked questions that made for a far more engrossing piece of content. I watched his last super formula race as best I could but without understanding Japanese it was bewildering. So I really loved this being the focus of the interview. Such a likable guy. Great interview. As someone said before one of the best interview with Alex Albon's interview on high performance channel ? I dont't think Alex Albon raced in Super formula. Thank God, you got rid of that insufferable cohost of a cu*t. I’m sure he was just a joy to walk the halls of Red Bull with, lol. Keep doing your own thing. You’re a great interviewer and very informative. Really hoping Liam gets a proper shot soon. He’s really quick and very good when the heat on the back of his neck so he deserves a proper seat. I would love to see him in a Red Bull, beside Max, I honestly don’t think he’s intimidated by him, which is what that team needs in that other seat.

@@brrrake so I’m not sure if you have two different channels on RU-vid but I’ve seen you with an English bloke who seems to be the saltiest of the salty. I love your work, and because you were in the industry, you have very insightful questions to put in front of the various personalities that you interview. Understand my criticisms of the aforementioned salty fellow is very much tongue in cheek and I’m sure he’s a delightful bloke, however it just doesn’t come off that well when he’s involved. I think you should do your own thing. That being said it’s just one guy’s opinion. I’m just glad someone from the states is out there with the proper knowledge of all things F1 and not just commenting about the show. Ben, a huge Formula One fan since 1985, which I can assure you growing up in Augusta Georgia I had no one to watch the race with on Sunday mornings lol.

@@rettmcbride8591 I didn't expect to have such an articulate and thoughtful explanation / conversation on the comments, but cheers for elaborating. He is a fuckin lovely guy, but he's not everyone's cup of tea. His humour is dry and harsh, and I enjoy it very much. I still have another podcast with him - and that's just two dudes talking trash about motorsport - not exaclty something the world needs any more of, but we have a good time. At the same time, this channel and its podcast content is another way for me to have an outlet, and make sure that if I have an interesting conversation, I have somehwere to share it. We've built a really fun and kind community and somehow managed to repel all of the toxic people. I'm quite proud of that. Thanks for taking the time to clarify

Hiya, dude! I'm 17, just finished my AS exams, and I'm looking to get into some high form of engineering within Motorsports, and I had a few questions. If you could point me in the correct direction, that would be fantastic. I heard a few recommendations that learning as many things as possible is good for getting this kind of a job, such as Python and MATLAB. Are there any other things I should think of learning? How do I know what type of engineering I like? That's currently my biggest issue. I don't know, I just love cars and always have. But there's many different components to engineering, be it Manufacture, Motorsport, Aerodynamics, whatever whatever. How do I know which one I like? I've never done this, so I don't really know the difference. Would I end up finding out at Uni? How would I know which one's for me? Also, what is the pay like? Haven't really seen that listed anywhere. Obviously it'll change with the job and experience, but a general quote would be great! My final Question is, how transferable would my skill-set be, if I were to go from being a Motorsport Engineer, to something a little more relaxed? I wanna spend a fair amount of time with a family I want to build. Anywho, thank you very much for your time!
