Have been eyeing the Glycine Combat Sub for quite some time now. Being an owner of a Glycine Airman, I kind of know what to expect in terms of quality from the brand. I know your video is five years old, but it made me finally pull the trigger on the Golden Eye. So far am loving it, the thinness of the case and the dial design. It edges out my old Seamaster Pro 300m in terms of slimness for a dive watch. My other dive watches seems relatively thick when placed side by side with this. I also placed mines on a black mesh strap and it is absolutely stunning. The dial design, color combination, case shape makes it a winner. A con for this watch would be the lume. Am still not decided on the 60 click bezel as its not really a con but it is different. I didnt consider it a con because it lines up (on my watch at least) and bezel play is nonexistent. Time will tell if the bezel action holds up. So far this watch is a winner even if it is priced in pre-Invicta prices but all the more now that they are agressively priced. Too bad Glycine has taken a bad rep because of Invicta but I guess thats good for us watch lovers. Thanks TVG for helping me decide on the golden eye. I wonder if you did keep your Glycine Combat Sub.
After months and months and months of tedious research, I finally pulled the trigger and bought this as my first watch. No regrets. She’s even more beautiful in person.
Just purchased a combat sub and totally fell in love with it, can’t take it off! By far the most comfortable automatic diver I have ever worn. Great watch !
I don't think watch enthusiasts have ever had it so good at the moment. Seriously good quality pieces that really make you question why you would ever spend 1000's on the higher tier. Another great vid cheers.... Alex.W.
Wow! I have that Golden eye and I put that same mesh band from Holbens on it. Bought as an EDC beater watch but after seeing it in person has been added to my dress watch collection. It is just so thin, so dressy, so slides under any sleeve, and exudes class. It is a keeper! Don't sell it!! Sean Connery In a tux would look well dressed with this watch with or without a PPK in his other hand. This is the dress Diver of the century. Hell it is the ONLY Dress diver out there! Best value out there! I am going to order another one, or two just so I can have backups. And to think this was supposed to be a replacement for my EDC beater watch, a Hamilton Titanium Khaki Field PVD. Guess I have to wear the Hamilton a while yet. Not complaining as the Hamilton is a damn fine watch.
Bought this watch a week ago, after seeing this review... It's an amazing watch. Bought it straight from Glycine factory, in Bienne, and got a 20% discount (it costed me around the 750$ mark). I am super pleased with the watch. Super slim, classy and gorgeous looking... Keep up the good work! Cheers
Received my Glycine Combat Sub (brownish bezel, black dial ) a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Love the thinness, the vintage military style dial and the overall fit on my wrist. It is such a sophisticated piece. The only thing I find disappointing is the lume: takes forever to charge and after that it works for 15 minutes or so.
Looking good TVG, love Glycine and thanks for introducing the whole company to me. The Golden Eye is beautiful. Glad you are healing up nicely and getting back in the groove after your hospital stay.
This video really helped me decide on purchasing this exact model, it will be a keeper in my growing collection. Thanks for pointing out so many good qualities I didn't think of, please keep up the great videos and reviews, I am new to watch collection but thanks to your videos I have gained so a tremendous amount of knowledge and appreciation for the hobby.
You're killing me mate! First the Squale and now the Golden Eye! At least I got to utilize the discount! Brings my collection up to 8. Good stuff TGV. Thanks.
Thanks so much for the multi-faceted approach to a quite wide range of time pieces. Much appreciated. I have a modest collection, as my lifetime collection was stolen a while back. I wanted to at least get a special watch for my 24 y.o. son's upcoming birthday. After viewing many of your excellent videos, I decided to bypass the new 'Made in Japan' Orients and got the following blue Glycine Combat watch. But then I feared I had blundered on the purchase, the specs are so different from what I've heard you describe. Sooooo.....here goes> Glycine Men's 3916.18S LBK8 Combat 6 Automatic 36mm Blue Dial Blue Leather Watch...Brand Glycine Gender Men's MPN 3916.18S.LBK8 Features 12-Hour Dial, Date Indicator, Sapphire Crystal, Scratch-Resistant, Swiss Made, Swiss Movement, Movement Mechanical (Automatic) Water Resistance Rating 50 m (5 ATM) Display Analog Watch Shape Round Case Material Stainless Steel, Face Color Blue, Band Material Genuine Leather, Band Color Blue, Case Size 36mm Country/Region of Manufacture Switzerland The MSRP was listed as $1,250 and I negotiated to a final price of $470. It was listed as new, with tags, etc.My son is 6' 3" tall and a trim, but big guy. His wrists are not much bigger than yours. When I saw the 36mm spec and others, I got worried that I maybe made a big mistake. Since I have grown to respect your assessments and knowledge, I suppose I was looking for an experienced enthusiast's opinion of my [maybe impulsive] purchase. Thanks so much. [I'll get the next one from Saltzman's, of course, as I grew up in Boston...about a half hour from the store in Rhode Island.] Just break it to me gently...and I hope you won't be forced to consult with Frederico on this embarrassing matter. [I have no money left for his consultation fees!!!! lol] I'm grateful for this...and all you've done. Gary K.
Do you know the technical differences between a stock ETA 2824-2 movement and the GL224? At a cursory glance, there don't really seem to be any. I see a signed rotor, and what appears to be a single blued screw at the rear most rotor bridge assembly. Is this pretty much it?
I have this exact model and bracelet. Hadley Roma MB3848A. I'll admit I was confused how to adjust the band at first but a quick google search sorted me out. I think it looks very classy, thanks for the review.
Glycine combat is an amazing watch. They hit all the marks. Can be found sub $400 on the gray market. Amazing amazing. And so thin. OMG. I've been following Glycine for quite a long time.
TGV - Thanks for your review! I am still honeymooning with the Glycine Sub I received this week. Very pleased with it and it is rare to find such a thin case in this style watch. I heartily recommend the Glycine Sub and agree it's best to purchase from Saltzman's. Very nice people and as you say, the only Glycine AD in North America. Cheers!
Thanks for the review. Number 1 on my list of watches to get next. 42mm should fit my wrist perfectly. Great coverage and thanks for your honesty. Oh yeah, and thanks for the Salzman's discount!
Based on your review I recently got a Combat sub. I like the looks and love the thinness! Two disappointments though. They don’t have drilled lugs anymore and the lume doesn’t last at all. But it keeps good time and it wears well on my small wrist. Overall I’m proud of it. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for this review. I finally made up my mind and bought a Glycine Combat SUB Automatic GL0076 and I agree, It´s a wonderful watch in every possible way.
Great looking watch love the gold and black pvd contrast. And for the price you are getting a solid, well made timepiece of high quality.KEEP IT TGV!!!
your welcome my friend, also this watch came at a tough time and lifted your spirts at the time, let it become part of the collection, symbolic piece .
Fantastic review as always my friend. I'd say keep it. The Goldeneye is unlike anything else in your collection. You know me I'm a sucker for the unique and out there designs.
+JustinMiles17 That is very true, you have a very articular taste, I only just noticed, I like that! Takes balls to be different. Thank you Justin, Best regards, TGV
Top notch watch and review. I just ordered the red bezel black dial gold tone accent on SS bracelet. Will post pics to the group FB page when it arrives.
Hi TGV, the "golden eye" is on massdrop right now for $399. Should I jump on this deal? I've got my blue squale 1521 on mesh which I wear daily but I really would like to add the "golden eye" with black mesh to my small but utilitarian collection. I'm just not sure how often I'll wear it because I do LOVE the squale 1521. I also have the squale 30 atmos GMT you've previously reviewed. But, I don't have a black diver, pvd or otherwise.
+The Urban Gentry Yea I got hooked on to it ever since the last few reviews from you and pulled the trigger, it will be my first automatic watch. Great job by the way on all your reviews. Wish you the best !
I was going back and forth between a Hamilton khaki, or a Glycine. I will get the Hamilton khaki, but I think the Glycine will come first. Your videos are great. I know this one is on the older side, but anytime I'm curious about a watch I look to see if you have a video on it first. Thank you so much!
Ordered a Combat Sub from Massdrop. I don’t know if the quality has changed with Invicta ownership. Also it’s the first time I’ve bought a watch through Massdrop. The thinness is the selling feature on the watch for me. Thanks for the review.
I recently purchased a Bronze Combat Sub (GL0281) and I could not be happier. I agree that a 40mm case diameter would be better for me. I have 6.5 inch wrists and it is borderline too big.
Great review as always. Really got me thinking of a glycine. I am liking your regular publishing of quality videos. Keep up the good work TGV! All the best. Oh, keep it mate, you can pull off a 42!
Whooo! Thanks for the review and your personal opinion on the Golden Eye, TGV! I like the colour combination! And I like how it sits on the wrist. Although it is a sports or diving watch it could be worn with a more dressier outfit as well, because of its gold and bronze tones. It's a really nice contrast. I'm going to wait for Baselworld to make a final decision what pricier watch is coming next. But the Golden Eye is high on my list. Best regards, Claus
+Claus-L. Müller (CLMac66) Very true, I didn't think of that but you are so right about wearing it with more dressy attire! Thank you Claus. Best regards, TGV
love it love it love it, its a keeper, i know the size is a issue for you but it wears fine, this could be the official tgv wild card, fantastic review, all the best my friend Ryan.
I'll have to join FB again, just to be a part of your community. Fantastic vid as always. A pleasure. Keep up all the good work, ignore anything negative, your the man, we all think so. chur Tgv.
great review I can't say enough about how great your channel is. it has definitely given me greater knowledge into the world of watches. I just want to thank you for your hard work. PS. definitely keep it ;)
Dear TGV, I love this watch. Heck, even my wife loves it and she is telling me to buy it! Which never happens! I was about to make the purchase when one day I stumbled upon a review saying that black and gold colors are PVD. This made me stop. I would like to ask you about your experience with this watch? Are the coatings still intact? Is it still as beautiful as it was when you made this review or does it currently look like edward scissorhands tried to put it for himself? Thanks.
Great review! I just ordered my Glycine Combat Sub (Golden Eye) after watching it (it was a difficult decision, had to skip on the Mido Ocean Star Captain V Titanium). :) I also wanted to ask you about the black bracelet from the review, cause I love the combo with the Combat Sub and would like to get the same bracelet. Could you give me some info from where to get or for some cheaper alternative, if this one is too pricey? Thanks!
+vladu789 Yes, everything is shot by me. I takes a whole afternoon to do but I am getting quicker. Thank you btw, time permitting I will always do as much as I can. Best regards, TGV
The combat subs are rather nice. I remember the video comparing the glycine combat sub with the squale. I was looking to get a squale later this year, but the glycine looks like a better deal. I love the brown and gold colour scheme, very understated. Good stuff.
Hello, Interesting about Glycine. What do think about Glycine combat sub phantom automatic GL0083 or Glycine combat sub phantom GL 224, 3908.199 N-TB90? Best regards Christer
Hi TGV, What kind of leather nato strap would you recommend for the goldeneye? I just got mine in 2 days ago and I don't know which kind of leather Nato strap would work. Do you have any suggestions?
hello, I have bought a golden eye from glycine and I would like to ask you if the strap which you put on is Hadley-Roma MB3838 Mesh Straight End PVD from the Holben site? Thank you.
I really enjoy the overall look of that Glycine but I'm not sure how I feel about the date. At a glance, is it difficult to read if you're not holding it up close? Great video TGV, and a very well done review.
+Grant Powell Thank you Grant, I agree, it could of been bigger. It is rather small but I have eyes like a hawk, I fear a cyclops would of ruined it. Great point, Thank you, Best regards, TGV
What do you think about the Oris Divers 65 for an affordable diver watch? I have my eye on one and curious on your thoughts? Keep the great videos coming. I may not be a fan of all the brands that you show but I really immensely appreciate the passion that you bring that's very apparent on all your videos. Love your reviews :)
I agree that even though it is a larger sized watch, it does wear well on a smaller wrist due to it being thinner. My suggestion, keep it for a while, have fun with it and then make a decision on its future in the collection. Btw, I like either of the bands. 👍🏻
Hey Trist. The Combat Sub has the same lug-to-lug dimension as the Steinharts, 50 milimiters. You really think it sits better on the wrist just because of its thickness, or it's because of the curved lugs? Kind regards, Fabio.
+Fabio Cassano Ciao Fabio, very good question. I have to say yes, the curved lugs and low profile make the world of difference IMO. Thank you :D Best regards, TGV
30% off??! Darn it Man, you're hard on my watch budget. I really, REALLY like the Golden Eye - the black and bronze go so well together and set off the watch from the competition. Fair comment on the hands too - it'd be nice to see a bit more differentiation between them would be nice. Does look great on the mesh too. Thanks for the review! Oh and keep it! You need it as your "wild card". Ciao, John
Great review as always! I was thinking about getting the Steinhart Ocean 2 in white but I am a bit disappointed by the new design. I am now deciding on whether to get the Golden Eye soon or save up for a Tudor Black Bay in blue. Thoughts people?
I was interested in a Glycine Combat 6 Classic Moonphase Automatic. I am getting into watch collecting and was interested in buying a moonphase watch sub 500$. This seems to fit the range in am looking for. What are you reviews.
