Oh how wonderful it is to see these archival videos! I have not had the pleasure of watching a Kennedy speech live during my lifetime. This is a great honor to see :) He was certainly charasmatic as evident by the cheers from the Germans.

Great speech. J.F.K. was a great orator. And it was back in the days when Americans still spoke English.

There is a line missing here that I find very weird. Around the 8:28 mark Kennedy should say, "Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving us." Instead it just cuts that line out and clips together two different instances of the crowd cheering. Maybe the film was damaged at that point and that's why they edited it out? You can hear the line in the JFK archival audio.

This was a great speech. As Kennedy noted, Democracy is not a perfect system. As he was so close to the Berlin Wall; his statement that "we have never had to put up a wall to keep our people in" was an especially powerful statement.

These old archived videos should be uploaded more often. Very informative to see the reactions to our WWII General and how quickly we got Germany to turn on the USSR, even though they were instrumental in defeating Hitler's army.

Did they had HD camera back then. Just wondering because all the videos before 1990s have bad quality and blurry
@chrisdraughn5941
@chrisdraughn5941 Год назад
No, it was recorded on silver nitrate film. That isn’t a digital storage medium. You’re looking at a digital copy of an analog format. In film from the 1990s you’re most likely looking at digital copies of VHS format…

Wrong. That's a myth circulated by Kennedy detractors. "Berliner" means resident of Berlin.

Okay then whats the correct term for i am a berliner in German?
@brianarbenz1329
@brianarbenz1329 Год назад
@@rsacitizen6151 It's "Ich bin ein Berliner." Yes, Berliner is a food named after the city, but so are hamburger and frankfurter named for German cities. The prime understanding any German has for those words is a resident of Frankfurt or Hamburg, not the foods. In fact, a resident of Vienna is called a Wiener. Really. The city's name in German is Wien, pronounced with a long e. If you were to say, "Ich bin a Wiener," it would mean something to a German very different than the English translation would to Americans.

Willy Brandt, the mayor of Berlin proof read President Kennedy's speech, being fluent in English and German so there is no way that he would allow his American president friend to say something that would make him look like a fool.

This is an American / international myth. What Kennedy said was perfectly correct German and wouldn't have been misunderstood by the crowd. While "Berliner" does also mean jelly doughnut in some (not even in Berlin) parts of the German speaking world, nobody would've taken it that way in this context.

This was very good, but I wish JFK had made freedom in Birmingham and Greensboro his top priority, instead of flying half way around the world to champion it. Your country is spending billions to stand for democracy in Europe and Asia while at home, your people are murdered for trying to register voters. Civil Rights, has made no progress during the two and one-half years of your being in charge, Mr. President. *"Las Sie nach Birmingham kommen."*
